Windows 11 Pro
Yesterday morning the PC worked just fine. A few hours later we decided to turn the PC on and got the 0xc000000e error code with a few options to repair. However trying to recover or access a DOS prompt just return us to this page. Nothing works.

I have created a USB drive with Windows 11 Pro on it and injected the Intel RST (NVMe drivers) into it so it can see the NVMe Windows drive (of which there are 4 in raid 10).

When loading from the Windows 11 installation USB, I have 2 options... recover (may be called repair) or install Windows 11. The Windows 11 option has a tick box that has to be filled in stating delete all files. The next Window wont appear until this is selected! I obviously cant do this.

The repair options are pretty useless. recover does not work.

DOS prompt works and I can see the hard drive in Diskpart.

What I need is an upgrade install so I can keep the existing programs and files

or at worst an option to allow me to reinstall, however while retaining the existing version of windows in a Windows old folder.

I just can't find a way to save the files.

I can make the main NVMe Windows 11 drive active in diskpart to allow me to access the installed version of Windows... but I know that copying the full drive this way will be rather painful!

Please can anyone advise how I can get Windows 11 working again please?

Thanks for any advise in advance

Please perform the following steps:

1) Find one or two flash drives that you can format (> or = 8 GB)

2) Find a working Windows computer

3) Create tools that can be used on the problematic computer

4) Create a bootable Sea Tools flash drive

5) Run the Sea Tools Long generic test > take pictures > post images or share links

7) If the Long generic test result reports fail then backup files and replace the drive

8) If the Long generic test result report pass then boot to the Windows 11 MCT

9) Perform startup repair > post srttrail.txt results

10) If system restore points are available then start with the oldest

11) Further steps pending the above results

Hi ZBook,
Massive thanks for helping me...

Ok so I ran the Sea Tools. All 4 Samsung 980pro NVMe drives checked out good with 99 / 98% of the drive lifespans still outstanding. So nothing wrong there. These run in raid 10 and give me a single 2TB C: drive normally.

As for the repair... There is no log to find. It is not written anywhere. The path that I'm given is /system32/logfiles/srt/srttrail.txt no drive letter is provided. I've looked high and low, but it's not stored as far as I can find.

None of the repair options work. All fail and not of the recovery or rollback options work.

When I enter DOS in recovery. My C drive does not show. There is no drive letter attached to the volume. I can assign one in diskpart, however as C: is taken up by another disk, it the drive is assigned to F:.

Also windows is not seen by the bootrec. I can assign a letter in diskpart, however, I'm not comfortable running the bootrec with the drive showing as F: This is incase it makes things worse. Do you know if the bootrec will repair back to how the boot assigned letter was or is at the time of running?

Thinking out loud... If I use diskpart to correctly assign the correct the drives letters so that C drive is C: and D drive is D:. The run bootrec... I wander if that will help?

Thanks again.

Hi FreeBooter.
My gut instinct is that the drive or partitions are not being seen correctly be the recovery tool and so they fail to work.

One strange thing though is that some of the recovery options recognise that Windows 11 is installed, but fail beyond that.

Hi zbook,
The Sea Tools results confirmed the drives were operating fine. Not got pictures... Is there something more that can be read from these?

FreeBooter... You sent me in the right direction... I started with your vid... But bootrec /fixboot got me access denied.

So I went into Diskpart. Removed and gave all drives their correct assigned drive letters. My drive D had become drive C and my drive C was unassigned.

Once corrected, I also assigned drive letters to the remaining drives.

I followed the below guide to correct the EFI boot partition... Quickly Fix: Bootrec /Fixboot Access Is Denied in Windows 10 - MiniTool Partition Wizard

Then followed the video again. Which again gave me access denied. And couldn't find a windows installation.

So I exited... This time back at the main menu I got restart into windows on partition 3... I restarted.

Back into windows...TF is all I can say!

Massive thanks to you both. I was boarding on a full reinstall earlier!

You don't need to change any drive letter, as the partition drive letter assignment different in WinRE.

When the computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment, the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assigned any other drive letter, usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit | find "osdevice" command can be used to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition, the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

When using Command Prompt to fix boot-related issues, it is common to face the “bootrec /fixboot Access is denied” error. There are many possible reasons for this problem to occur on your computer. In this video, i will help you troubleshoot this error.

The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assigned any other drive letter, usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition.

On an MBR disk, usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition.

On a GPT disk, usually C: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition.

@GT Monster:

bootrec /fixboot ===> Access is denied.

It's not an error message, it just means that the command has been blocked. Both with Windows 10 (from version 1709) and Windows 11 installation media. All my computers have the same "problem" (i.e. it is a feature rather than a problem).

Do you even read, as i said it might not be C: letter assign to Windows installed partition.

Also, do you even know /FixBoot command do or use for before making claim it's not used any longer?

You know what i let you take over, you look like you know much more than me.
