Windows 11 Shuts Down When Waking From Sleep or Hibernate

I recently got an upgraded laptop from my work since my old Lenovo P50 running Windows 10 was becoming rather unstable with multiple crashes per week. The new laptop is a Dell Latitude 5430 running Windows 11. While I would prefer Win10, I don't necessarily need it as everything I do is in a browser, Visual Studio, or a server.

The issue arises when it comes to hibernation or sleep. Anytime I wake the computer up by pressing the power button (as I've done with literally every computer I've ever known), I get the Dell logo with the Windows loading circle and then the computer just shuts down.

I haven't been able to find anything about this specific issue, and everything I've seen online is to change various power settings, but nothing seems to make any difference. I have the power and sleep button set to Do nothing on battery and plugged in in the power options, but it also seems to make no difference.

Has anyone experienced this issue before or perhaps have an idea of what the issue might be?

Not on a laptop here, but I bring mine out of sleep by left clicking the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard. Give it a try and see if it still shuts down.

Welcome to the forum. Check your power settings. Control Panel>power options>Choose what the power buttons do.
It sounds to me like you are using a too-long press of the power button and it's shutting down instead of waking.
Why not wake it with the keyboard or touchpad instead.
Control Panel>device manager>expand keyboards>right click on your keyboard>select properties>power management tab>check the box allow this device to wake computer>Apply OK.

Use the same procedure for your touchpad except expand 'Mice and other pointing devices' in device manager and select your touchpad.

Also know that the new laptop does not use normal sleep(s3) as you are accustomed to. It uses modern standby instead(called s0 sleep) Folks using these new modern standby devices have reported all kinds of issues. If your job demands that you carry this laptop in a case, DO NOT leave it in modern standby state for any extended period. Shut it down instead or set it to use hibernate instead of s0 sleep. Numerous reports of overheating have been reported while enclosed in case. S0 sleep also causes fast battery depletion.

So, my first thought when I first came across the issue was to change the settings for the power and reset buttons to "Do nothing" which is what I did, but it made no difference. My second thought was to enable "Allow this device to wake computer". However, the option is greyed out on all of my devices. I looked through Windows and the BIOS, but have not been able to find any power options to allow me to enable it.

Even though I was unable to enable "Allow this device to wake computer", I was able to do another test. After work yesterday I put my computer in hibernate at EoD. This morning when I got to work I plugged it into the accompanying Dell USB-C dock I have for the computer. There's a feature that's effectively "Wake up computer when it plugs into the doc"; no button pressing involved at all. I plugged it in and sure enough it woke up only to shut itself down.

I also tried adding the PlatformAoAcOverride dword in the registry at Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power, but according to powercfg, S3 is not supported by my systems firmware.

So, it's shutting down on wakeup no matter what method is used to wake it. As I said, modern standby is giving people fits with all kinds of issues. You might first check if it is running the latest bios. If it was purchased directly from Dell, it probably is. If purchased elsewhere, it could have been on the shelf a while.

Dell has issued a support article about sleep/wake problems. You might run through it to see if anything helps.

My take on the various sleep/wake/overheat/battery issues involving new laptops is different than most people here. Rather than the user (many who are inexperienced but I can tell you are not) spending excess time messing with the issue, I think every buyer needs to put it back on the manufacturer and make them deal with any problem encountered with modern standby. If enough people would do this, the manufacturers might do something about it. As it is, people attempt to resolve things themselves or just live with the problem. If it were me, I would perform the steps in Dell's support article. If your problem still occurrs, I'd be calling Dell, or have your company do so.

did you ever resolve this? I have the exact same problem! Dell replaced the mother board but as expected, that didn't fix it as it is still happening.
