I tried this but without success. First added SMB1 but then got message that SMB2 was required. Did that but no success with that either. However all this was on an old Win 10 laptop using MR Free v7. Hoping to get my Win 11 laptop back with MR Home v8 next week and will try again.

Try setting your shares up manually in Macrium then recreate your boot media. The shares and permissions are retained.

Restoring from NAS over WiFi now working fine with MR v8 Home on Win 11 Pro but still fails with MR v7 Free on Win 10 Pro. First time I've had reason to question MR v7 Free. It has never let me down restoring images from a USB drive but fails from a network drive before I upgraded.

Ive not used this one, but On Win10 I had major issues with acronis. Backups were skewed and broken yadiie ya. Well I have tried Macrium, Aomei Backupper, Windows backup itself and one or two others. I finally settled on EaseUs ToDo Backupper Technician Edition(Pros perfect also for the home user) and have been smooth sailing since. Reason I had issues was My backups are stored on a HDD and My main C Drive is an SSD. Most would either not see my D: Drive(the HDD) or Macrium Did and it even finished the restoration of a backup, but once I restarted my computer OMG way messed up..

I quite like O&O I had versions 15 and 16 iirc. One nice feature is excluding things from images. It has a lot of functions and options and plenty of menus to play with. The sale for v17 seems to be still on.

I more often use wim format, or sometimes wbadmin to create a vhd image. For migrating os or cloning (copying ) partitions diskgenius free does the job well.

EDIT: here is a v16 giveaway. Not sure how long it will take for the registration email - they might have closed for Christmas as it is already the 20th December.

O&O Drive Image is good. Nice interfaces, has existed and evolved for a long time. The traditional problem is that it is somewhat slow. Nut I tried v. 17 to create a full image in an external NVMe SSD, and it was faster than Macrium. It lacks a "fix boot" function, which can be useful in case of boot problems, and exists in both Macrium and TeraByte.

I use Carbonite as my cloud backup. Install, set it, forget it. Can change monitoring frequency from continuous to monthly. Still using Acronis True Image 2018 for data backups :)

The rumors about Backup and Restore Windows 7 (which comes with W10 and W11) are just that - rumors. When our systems have been in use for 20 minutes and your backup drive is either plugged into a USB port or is installed internally, all drives go into "sleep mode" after 20 minutes (by default) (this can be changed in Power Settings). Simply open the backup drive (give it a nudge) to wake it up before using Windows Backup and Restore. I personally choose System Image only because it's faster after the first system image is created.

I personally hope it is never removed but perhaps upgraded with more options in W11 as WU are released. It's fine as is if they never change it.

I have the same issue and it is because my ageing NAS needs SMB1 in order to be accessed, but SMB1 is not available in WinPE. You can only restore a system image using your rescue media and that uses WinPE. I get around this by copying the image file to a local drive prior to restore.

@fixer: Macrium Reflect automagically uses WinRE when I back up.

They are not rumors. It is terrible and many times flat out does not work. It does much better at creating images than it does in restoring them which is where most of the failures occur. It's just taking up space and should be removed. Microsoft themselves do not trust it and recommend using something else.

There are real opinions on it! Some hate it, some keep using it. I personally have never had any problems with it, and never had an image fail to restore. But I do use another program as well now - belt and braces.

For beginners or people who aren't that techy it's a good solution. But I hope they at least start calling it Windows 11 imaging instead of Windows 7 imaging! change cd recovery to usb recovery and do whatever it is that people want to see to have it more up to speed. It is not as versatile as other backup programs but it does image your drive!

Windows' Backup and Restore does work, but it's clunky and you have to leave stuff alone and let Windows do its thing.

Do I use it... no. Have I used it... yes. Did it work... yes. Will I ever use it again... no. I use Acronis for basic backups, and Macrium for "disk images".

They will remove it before they rename it or even update it. It was deprecated long ago and needs to be removed.

I was surprised they included it in Windows 11 tbh so assumed they were planning on keeping it.

Microsoft never said Windows 10 was the last Windows. It was some developer using a throwaway line...

But Microsoft representatives never said that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows—not really. That comment was actually made by Jerry Nixon, a Microsoft developer evangelist who spoke at the company’s ”Tiles, Notifications, and Action Center” presentation about Windows 10 at Microsoft’s Microsoft Ignite conference in 2015. According to the transcript of the session, Nixon’s comment was more of a throwaway line, one that he literally referred to as a segue.

However, it is not a rumor, it is a fact, that Microsoft recommends using a third party backup image app. For once (which isn't often), I will follow Microsoft's own recommendation.

No, they are statements of fact direct from Microsoft. their System Image Backup Solution is deprecated, and that means Microsoft has ceased all development.
