My Kaspersky Total recently expired. I am using windows 11 pro. How do I make sure windows defender is turned on?

Kaspersky doesn't work anymore since it's expired but it seems to mention Kaspersky when you type in defender? Is it in windows security with the virus and thread protection?

Because it shows this

Kaspersky Total Scurity

Actions recommended for protection settings

Current threats

No actions needed

Protection settings

Actions recommended for protection settings with yellow exclamation mark

No actions needed

Open app

Microsoft Defender Antivirus options

I have the periodic scanning turned off

Now if I type in Microsoft defender in search and it opens it up.

It shows

my email @ outlook.com

The email I believe I created when I set up my laptop years ago when I got it as it required an email. Do I click on the email? Another option is sign up with a different account.

I am confused here as shouldn't windows defender be showing the information like from my 1st post? I read Microsoft defender is not the same thing as windows defender but where are the settings on windows defender where I could do a scan of it? Why does it not show windows defender as oppose to Kaspersky Total Security in the earlier post?

Did you uninstall all third-party antivirus software?

Also post a picture of Windows Defender Security app.

The normal workflow in Windows when a 3rd party antivirus tool is installed.
  1. AV program installed
  2. AV program registered with WSC (Windows Security Center)
  3. Windows disabled Defender

So simply put verify Kaspersky has been completely uninstalled, at which point it will get de-registered with WSC and Defender will reactivate.

So there isn't a way to pause Kaspersky total or whatever it maybe to have windows defender turn on? I went and paused Kaspersky total and now it shows this.

I don't want to uninstall Kaspersky Total.

When Kaspersky Total subscript was active, if I paused Kaspersky Total, I noticed that it would show windows defender showing though? But it doesn't seem to do that now? Maybe it wasn't like how I thought it was back then when I did the pause of Kaspersky Total?

I did that right now with pause Kaspersky Total

So is windows defender turned on right now or not with what is showing? The thing is when I right click and close Kaspersky Total on the bottom right icon, it show message on bottom right

Only thing I can click on is dismiss and I click that. It now shows this

Kaspersky Total Security

Kaspersky Total Security is snoozed

I don't want to uninstall Kaspersky Total.
It's expired, uninstall it. You can always reinstall it if you decide to resubscribe. If your in the usa, you should uninstall it anyway.

Windows defender should turn on automatically when another antivirus reports that its paused or expired. But that is if the antivirus vendor did a good job and did what they were supposed to do. This is sadly not always the case.

Uninstall it, and windows defender should show up.

If you absolutely insist, you can try poking around in the options of Kaspersky, see if there is an option to deregister it in the security center and remove it from startup. But you should not have 2 antivirus programs running.

But ideally, you should just uninstall.

The thing is I want to make sure I have my Kaspersky settings saved though if I was to renew it in the future. How would I do this before uninstalling Kaspersky total?

I'm from the US and installed Kaspersky Total and bought it while in the US but I'm outside the US almost all the time. The Kaspersky Total just expired.

I paused Kaspersky Total even though it's expired but when I do that, I don't believe Windows Defender is turned on? Right after pausing Kaspersky Total, bottom right corner shows an option to click on dismiss under turn on windows defender which means windows defender isn't turned on?

So can I have Windows Defender on then with pausing Kaspersky Total?

I am not sure if I'm using real time protection with Window Defender now?

When you uninstall it usually keeps your settings. It might even ask during uninstalling if you would like to keep your settings.

You can see if windows defender is running by opening windows security. Click on virus and threat protection and windows defender should be there.

It doesn't look like that. I know that is how it's suppose to look if you have windows defender only on your laptop and turned on.

There is no option of what's protecting me. So does that mean Windows Defender is turned off at the moment with Kaspersky Total snoozed?

Hello @newmann, :alien:

You can turn on Periodic Scanning for Microsoft Defender Antivirus like in the tutorial below.

There is the option to do this as I posted how my screen looks in bold with Windows Security. So if I turn that on... what does that do? That is microsoft defender and not windows defender though?

So at the moment with what I have now with Kaspersky Total paused and snoozed... Windows defender is turned on or off?

If Kaspersky Total is turned on but since it is expired, then there is no protection right as windows defender is 100% turned off in this situation?

Turning on Periodic Scanning is to turn on having Microsoft Defender Antivirus along with Kaspersky.

exactly what is says. Windows defender will only scan for threats in the background periodically using your other av as the main source of real time protection. It does not protect your device in real time. It only scans for malware on the disks.

Again, uninstall it is my recommendation.

If you look at the manage providers section it will inform you of the status of everything.
