Windows XP?

Went through MS-DOS 3.31 & 5.0, Windows (3.1 The install falsely promised lifetime updates)-95-98SE-2000-XP(remember Black Viper's services list?)-7-10 and 11. Skipped Vista and Windows 8. Past CPUs: 8086,8088,skipped 80286,80386SX,skipped 80486,Pentium,Athlon,Core i5.
Wow, I guess I have a few 'carbon footprints' getting here.
They just forgot to specify whose lifetime. I got started in '92 with MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1.

Windows will be 'the best' when it's written in a memory safe language such as Rust and not c and c++. This would elimate whole classes of vulnerabilities and other issues. That's my 2 cents

Huh - only reason for staying on XP is to run very old games. Only masochists would stay on it.

Try running MS Office since 2013.

I know for sure many of my works apps will not run on anything since Windows 8.

I love how people look at old OSs with rose coloured glasses conveniently forgetting how often they used to crash.

I remember XP crashing every day (BSOD equivalent).

Personally, I cannot remember last time W10/11 crashed with BSOD.

XP cannot run things like Hyper-V.

XP is simply not man enough to cope with modern systems.

No point in saying "ah but if..." as that is pure speculation.

In my opinion, XP should remain in dustbin of history, along with Vista, Windows 7/8.

Of course, nobody is stopping people using it but if they want to delude themselves XP is great, that is their prerogative.
On my Win11 box, I use Microsoft Office 2010, activated and with all updates. I never install Outlook or Powerpoint though. I mostly use Word, some Excel, and rarely (or notat all) Access. I've saved all the updates..SP2, security, etc., and two add-ins for Word (Mathematics,Chemistry). Would be glad to share the updates, and the whole Office 2010 suite, but not my Office 2010 license. I also have WinXPSP3, but you can't have my license for that either. :)

Nah, I'm not a sentimental gal and I don't miss XP. WU was always getting hosed up in XP and a PITA. It wasn't the updates themselves. Then in 7 it wasn't much better , but somewhat, but I loved everything else about 7 so if I had a sentimental bone in my body it would be for 7.
The update process got much better in 10, and so far my WU hasn't needed reset once in 11 so MS has gotten that part right. Now, if MS could only get their stuff together and get back to releasing updates that don't fail for everyone or send systems into a tailspin.

I still run a Windows XP 32bit machine for one reason only, Symantec WinFax Pro as I still do send faxes regularly and that was the last version of Windows it supported.

The only places I know that use faxes still are emergency reponse centres where analogue phones still work when everything digital has gone down the pan.

Having said that, the UK analogue phone network is due to shut very soon.

That is actually a wallpaper addin (a theme). It still keeps Windows 11 features
If you do this you will get Windows 7 Basic/Aero(??) theme. For some reason it works that way, and DWM is what does it. It still works!

taskkill /f /im DWM.exe

--- My Windows PE testing environment lies here, (because I like retro), but I CAN and HAVE run beta versions of Windows 11. 21996 was the version. Also, I have lots of experience of Win11 and 10, and know how to deploy the OS. ---

I run it too -- to cut Vinyl records from bespoke music and make album covers (LP / 45's) - the hardware only runs on XP = newer hardware costs around €30,000 plus those hideous subscription fees for using the software / licenses etc etc. Not viable since my old hardware works a treat and have perpetual licenses and with a resurgence in vinyl sourcing blank disks is not a problem any more !!!.

Cheers

Sure ... run XP to your heart's content.

If you are licensed (or can get at license keys), just run it forever in a VM (as suggested above). My copy runs just fine, and I can bring it up whenever I need to explore old tools, office xp or nearby, or whatever. MS abandoned it, but that never means we have to abandon it.

The HostOS (win or linux) and a virtualization package (VMware workstation, VirtualBox) provides all the modern access to things (hardware, printing, filesystems, etc.) you could ever want. XP can access all of that from within the VM. Your 32-bit XP giving you grief at 4GB of ram or less? Run two of them from within the HostOS, and now you effectively have up to 8GB ram for XP. Is it running a tad slow for you, on some older hardware? In a VM, on top of SSD and such, it now flies ...

HostOS provides the security, so from within the VM for XP, you need not worry about virii and whatnot ...

It just works, and you can do this anytime you want or need it ...

The only places I know that use faxes still are emergency reponse centres where analogue phones still work when everything digital has gone down the pan.

Having said that, the UK analogue phone network is due to shut very soon.
Not for that, in my case, it is for submitting credit card billing inquiries and disputes as they do not have a email option, everything is either postal which can easily get loss or fax.

faxes are actually still quite useful since emailtends to be in 1000's a day for large businesses and often gets overlooked plus a fax is a hard copy and it's very hard to hack into old analog technology !!!

XP was OK, I suppose. I preferred the look and feel of Windows 7, but I have grudgingly accepted the clunky, ugly GUI of Win 11 because it is more powerful. Or at least seems to be.

I have XP running on an old PC that I use for burning EPROMS and as a logic analyzer. Both programs for these things won't work on anything but XP no matter what compatibility setting I select, and they won't run from a VM as they require a hardware interface that can't be seen from within the VM.

So I guess I will have XP in my life for a while yet.
