I posted a month or so ago asking for help deciding on a new laptop and had many helpful responses. I posted an update to that previous post with a similar message as below but because the post is old and not sure if anyone will see it. I am getting close, like real close to pulling the trigger on a new laptop and was wondering what your opinions, good or bad, on the computers and specs are below, besides the price(s). One of the computers is on Clearance, not sure if buying a "clearance" or "deal" laptop is good or bad unit wise??

I'd love to know your are some components better then other if i would to get one if so what, and if you aren't sure I understand just let me know.
My current laptop is still functioning, but windows 10 Inspiron 15 7000 but almost 9 years old

***Recap of my usage, web browsing/research, Photoshop Premier Elements photo scanning/editing, Quicken, Youtube.....
(Also I have a Desktop already)

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus | Dell USA

There is an XPS that has gotten a lot of great reviews but it only has a 13" screen

It looks partly between do you want a 14" or 16" and do you want nvidia graphics or not? I don;t think nvidia is necessary for photoshop when you have a core i7/ultra 7 processor.

Personally I prefer 14" laptops as they're a more flexible size. A 16" is more for a desk all the time perhaps. As for the XPS 13 - it has horrible function buttons that are touch only apparently. Despite the good reviews.

I think there is still a 15" XPS as well - just checking....

Actually there is a 14XPS, a 15XPS and a 16XPS as well :-)

The XPS13 really is quite small even for a 13" laptop - I find 13" too small to comfortable use - it's more for portability. Where as 14" has that much more screen and a more comfortable viewing angle and can be used on your lap quite easily too.

This is the XPS14 - if you like the invisible haptic touch pad and touch buttons for functions :-) I haven't tried one so don't know what it's like but some reviews have not particularly liked the touch function buttons. They're probably ok - depends how much you use function buttons.

I'd probably choose the Inspiron 14 though - it has a good spec and Intel wifi. I;m not sure if the XPS range still uses Killer wifi but some people have had issues with that and the drivers for it.

Here are some points I noticed. I'm not a laptop user myself but I've worked on enough of them to know if it was my only system anything less than a 15 inch screen wouldn't cut the mustard for me. Entirely too small.(unless I planned to use an external monitor.)

Note: I can only relate my opinion as to if it was me buying a laptop.

Big drawback on both those laptops with the options that are selected is not enough ram.
16 gb ram is barely enough for browsing and email. It certainly would not be enough for doing much in Photoshop. 32 gb ram is the sweet spot in today's computing IMO so if you go with either one of those, choose the 32gb ram option which will raise its price substantially as well as changing the discrete graphics and size of system drive. DO NOT choose on-board ram. Onboard ram is soldered to the motherboard and can open up a can of worms on down the road.
For example, here is a screenshot of changing the 16 inch laptop to 32 gb ram. It raises price to $1699
Screenshot 2025-01-17 224814.webp

Something else that would be important to me is lack of type A usb ports in both those laptops. The 16 inch has only 2 usb-A, but according to the listed specs on the 14 inch, it has no usb-A ports a all, only usb C ports.(no usb-A is a big drawback) However, both do have thunderbolt so you will probably end up having to use a thunderbolt dock on either one. I know I would have to with all the usb devices I use.

Great reply I appreciate it. My current working , almost 9 year old laptop only has 16GB ram and I've been using photoshop on it for years so I think the 32GB would be a plus, but not necessarily necessary. Could a hub be used, if necessary due to lack of ports? Right now the only time I use a port is for my wireless mouse and occasional flash drive.

Since the Dell XPS 16 has been mentioned, I can give personal experience. See my specs in "My Computer" below. I really like mine and am more than pleased. I had doubts about the touch function row, but after using it for 3 months I actually like it.

I like the invisible haptic touchpad. It's been several years since I've used a mouse, so I use the touchpad full time. It's a bit larger than a normal touchpad and I have no trouble with it at all. And it's nice having a smooth surface that doesn't have edges that catch dust or crumbs and is easy to clean.

Having only Type C Thunderbolt 4 ports is not a problem for me. All my devices and portable drives are Type C.

There is an advantage of soldered RAM. It's faster than slotted RAM. I purchased 32GB to ensure always having enough for my use.

The 16" 4K OLED 3840 x 2400 screen is color accurate and sharp for my Photoshop/Lightroom. What a pleasure to use!

The current price for my configuration is $3,449 USD on the Dell web site.

@TraderGary that laptop you have looks nice, but it's way more then I want to spend, hence the 2 links I posted. Any opinions on the 2 I posted or similar you would suggest 😉

I also use photoshop with 16gb ram no problem. If the ram is upgradeable you could upgrade it later if needed. However the base model of the 14" has onboard ram, so Glasskuters advice is good. If it only has onboard/soldered ram, then better to go for 32gb

The 16" has upgradeable ram and better graphics. But it depends what screen size you want.

Yes I know that, but what does that have to do with my question
You mentioned at the end of your post that the XPS 13 had good reviews - so it sounded like you might be considering it. The article also says Inspiron laptops will be discontinued as well but I'm sure support/drivers would be available for quite some time.

I beg to differ. I can't say anything about about memory need of Photoshop but I've never ran into any problems with only 16GB of memory in my computers. On my one desktop I do a lot of transcoding. When I'm transcoding I can run other programs without even a slow down to my computer

I have never had a computer with more than 16GB of memory and never had a problem. If 16GB of memory is working for you I can't see the need to spend more money to upgrade the memory. That is of course unless you want too. If you do go with the 16 GB memory just make sure it's upgradable if you decide later that 16GB isn't enough.

Thanks @Hazel123 good info. My current screen size, on my laptop is 15.5 so one inch either way really wouldn't make a difference, you know what i mean. That was new to my about "onboard" being soldered ram i hadn't looked that up yet and is something to ponder. Im not stuck on the 2 laptops Im asking about, its just that they looked good, are within my price range and better yet ON SALE/CLEARANCE yippee.... so im still open to suggestions

Thank you, and to determine if a computers memory is upgradable is to make sure that the ram is not soldered/onboarded, correct???
