There's always something on sale.
Of course it's not an AI processor, and is unlikely to last long on battery power.
Adding memory is not a problem.
True there are always sales, but I was looking directly on the company/Dells website. So what is it that you like about the computer you posted/are suggesting? Do you have this make of computer?

If looking at alternatives, it might be better to keep to a 15.6" laptop - as it isn't just screen size, but handleability - and if you're used to that size it could work better for you. Although it does seem some manufacturers are now going 14" and 16" instead. A 16" screen might have the same external dimensions as your current 15.6" though.

I use photoshop and have a Core i5 processor and 16gb ram, which is fine. Core i7 would be nicer though.

I think the majority have ram soldered to the motherboard now, but the Dell 16 you link is one of the few that has upgradeable ram. Otherwise it seems to be mainly gaming laptops.

I'm not saying 16 gb ram is not enough. I'm saying IMO it's the BARE MINIMUM in today's Windows. With every new version of windows as features are added, the amount of ram the OS itself uses increases. We don't know where Windows is going to go in the future. One can not say "I have 16 gb and it's plenty". It may well be plenty for the way one uses his system but not enough for the way the next guy computes.

It's been proven that additional ram is the cheapest, most beneficial upgrade one can make. Once a system's ram starts to max out,the cpu has to work harder. Not only is performance affected, more heat is generated.. It's easy to say, too, that "Oh well, you can always add more ram if you need it". While that is true, many times it can easily cost a lot more to do it later on depending on the original ram configuration. To shortchange a $1000++ laptop makes no sense to me.

I have most auto starting background apps disabled. Right now I have ONE browser tab open to this site and nothing else. I'm using 7.8 gb of ram. I can open another tab and watch a youtube video. Ram usage jumps up to 8.2 gb. I decide to read my email in Outlook and up it goes to 8.5. For every active tab I open, ram usage increases by .3-.5 gb.

As with everything else, especially on this forum, we all have our opinions and this is mine. But I'm a firm believer in "You do you."

Thank you, and to determine if a computers memory is upgradable is to make sure that the ram is not soldered/onboarded, correct???
That is correct. You want memory you can remove.

This is correct but only if ones computer maxes out the ram usage. I have never done that so for my needs and a lot of other people, 16GB is plenty. For a easy example. I only drink 16oz or less of water at a time. A 32oz class would be way bigger than I need. With AI and other tech that is coming out, my next computer I buy, will have 32GB or of ram.

Thanks @Hazel123 good info. My current screen size, on my laptop is 15.5 so one inch either way really wouldn't make a difference, you know what i mean. That was new to my about "onboard" being soldered ram i hadn't looked that up yet and is something to ponder. Im not stuck on the 2 laptops Im asking about, its just that they looked good, are within my price range and better yet ON SALE/CLEARANCE yippee.... so im still open to suggestions
If you're in the US, do you live anywhere near a Microcenter? If you do, you can get some great deals on refurbished laptops. I have been buying them for years. They have all been worth buying. Every one of them that got upgraded by me buying a new laptop was passed on to family members except one. I broke the pins off of the motherboard when I tried to unplug the cooling fan. It was my fault and not the laptops. The laptop still works though.

Curious, wouldn't it be less expensive to buy a laptop with lower ram, and then add your own ram to it? I mean it seems like the ram the manufactures sell is priced really high and its cheaper to buy that same ram somewhere else and add it yourself, you know what I mean? or is that a bad idea?

Im in the US, but no Microcenter that Im aware of. Im reluctant to by refurbished. For some reason refurbished computers doesn't sit well with me. I mean there is only so much your can refurbish, and you are still left with older/used components (i haven't researched it just what I think).

Mine is an HP pavilion 14 but it’s a 10th generation one. I think the newer ones come with onboard ram - except some of the hp pro books possibly.

This core i7 15.6” hp pro book seems to have upgradeable ram as it mentions one 16gb stick

Yes you can upgrade memory and storage on that model.

@andrew129260 this is the other post i mentioned to you last night. The two links are above. If if you don't read through the other comments... someone brought to my attention and I learned what onboarded RAM is and didn't realize that these have that, I think, sooooo your opinion on that is welcome too. Im still shopping but how to make up my mind this weekend before tariffs are imposed.

I don’t know if it’s more expensive to buy it later or not - I upgrade ran later to spread the cost. But for example with a surface pro it’s cheaper to buy with a 250gb ssd and buy the 1tb ssd later - than to buy it already with a 1tb ssd. But that’s not ram!

Looking at your intended use, you don't want to edit photo and watch Youtube on a small screen. 16" will be much better for your purpose. As for components, not very sure what the budget is but of course at least i7 and maybe a 4050 gpu will be a good match for your intended use.

You must have more background programs running then you think. Right now I'm transcoding with Handbrake and have one tab open in Edge and my computer is only using 6.1GB. Except for Defender I'm not sure what other background programs are running.

Looking at your intended use, you don't want to edit photo and watch Youtube on a small screen. 16" will be much better for your purpose. As for components, not very sure what the budget is but of course at least i7 and maybe a 4050 gpu will be a good match for your intended use.
@badrobot not so much worried about the screen size, but anything above a 13 would work, more concerned about the components...graphics, processors as im only a little familiar with them. Are either of the 2 possible computers have those features you mentioned (at least i7 and maybe a 4050 gpu) or should I keep looking (which I can't seem to help myself from doing)

Just to give y'all an example of what I meant by it sometimes costing less in the long run to buy more ram up front, using that 16" laptop as an example. It comes with 2 slots equipped with 2 x 8gb sticks. If the user wants to add additional ram later, he can do one of 2 things...remove both 8 gb sticks and replace with 2 16gb sticks to get to 32 gb OR keep one 8 gb stick and replace the other with a 16gb stick to get to 24 gb (would not have matching ram in this case). Either way, he will no longer be using at least one if not both the sticks of ram he's already paid for.

Im in the US, but no Microcenter that Im aware of. Im reluctant to by refurbished. For some reason refurbished computers doesn't sit well with me. I mean there is only so much your can refurbish, and you are still left with older/used components (i haven't researched it just what I think).
All of the laptops I have purchased are up to date factory refurbished laptops that come with a warranty. My wife did have a small problem when we bought her latest laptop. I think it was a Windows problem and not the laptop. When setting it up, after a few screens the keyboard would stop working. I tried it a couple of times and it kept stopping at the same screen. I took it back and Microcenter gladly replaced it with another one. If you don't have a nearby Microcenter it doesn't matter any how. They are in store deals.

If the OP plans on using new features such as Windows Copilot then I agree that they should spend a little extra now and go with at least 32GB. If not then it's a personal choice.
