It's one of those questions that's really a personal preference. I just use Windows Security (Defender) coupled with Macrium images (in case of a disaster) and that's it.

I'm using a new Dell computer that came with McAfee LiveSafe installed. The first instinct was to remove it but then thought I'd see how it behaved for a while. It seems OK and I'll probably leave it installed for the year. It does well on AV-Comparatives' tests these days. I'll think again when the year is up.

I was a big fan of Bitdefender Free until it's demise but now I'm comfortable with Windows Security as my protection with a weekly scan using Malwarebytes Free.

I'm using an AV program called F-Secure. It's part of my internet service through my ISP. It seems to be fine and not taking up a lot of resources. The ISP used to support McAfee, but no longer has a deal with them. It's not actually a free AV program like Avast. I would also be fine with Windows Security as a free AV program.
