Zorin OS 17.1 has been released

 Zorin Blog:

After just over two months since its release, Zorin OS 17 has been downloaded over half a million times. More than 78% of these downloads came from proprietary platforms like Windows and macOS, reflecting our mission to bring the power of Linux to new people and to grow the community for the benefit of all.

Ever since; we’ve been listening to your feedback and working tirelessly to make our greatest operating system even better. We’re excited to bring you these improvements with the release of Zorin OS 17.1 today.

What’s new

Enhanced Windows App Support

To craft the most user-friendly desktop experience, we endeavor to support the widest selection of apps and games in Zorin OS. With this new release, we’re making it even easier to run your favorite apps, regardless of which platform they were originally developed for.

Tailored alternatives to more Windows apps

We’ve expanded our built-in database to detect installer files for popular Windows apps and games. It now supports over 100 apps, providing even more tailored recommendations for alternatives to sideloading their Windows executables.

For example, launching the Windows installers for apps like the Opera Browser or Todoist now directs you to install their native Linux versions from the built-in Software store. This makes it even easier to get the most compatible versions of these apps for the best experience in Zorin OS.

So I re-did the usb using balena etcher - one they suggest. Previously did it in Rufus. It's loading now. You have to wait about 30 seconds after hitting return and then it starts loading.

There's a fairly standard Ubuntu set up process which looks slightly odd in light grey/blue against the purpley background of the desktop. But with an added tick box "don't participate in the census". "The census lets the Zorin OS developers count the number of users anonymously - learn more ...."

Saying use Linux is like saying speak Scandinavian. Danish, Norwegian, Swedish (and Icelandic?) are all similar but not the same.

I just love it when thread is about a particular version, people bombard thread about one of the zilion other Linux variants.
I can see the same this in just about every thread.

    Noisy but fast
Well it's installed and it is quite windows-like. I had to restart a couple of times as something failed on the first restart but then it was ok.

I've installed it on the 10" eee pc 1015px (one of the later ones with better atom processor) with 2gb ram and sata ssd.

It is very slow on this. Programs and settings take about 20 to 30 seconds to open. Actually slower than Windows 11 on this machine. Might be fine on a more powerful computer. Web browser is fast enough though. Noticed when I type lower case i it displays as a capital for some weird reason.

The only tweaks I had to make were setting the speed of the mouse which was slow. And used the terminal to turn the firewall on.

It looks and feels windows-like though. You can right click on the task bar. Menus are fairly simple. It has an updates program - ie no need to use the terminal.

It saved the screenshots to the pictures folder and allowed me to upload them on here easily.

Looks like it could replace Windows on a machine that wouldn't run Windows 11 after 24H2 - if it had a decent processor and enough ram. The only annoying thing I've seen so far is when you click on a program on the task bar, a little circle flashes while spinning.

I had to go back to main computer to download one of those images and remove my name in Paint though. There is probably a program to do that in Linux but it wasn't preinstalled with the Core edition - which has the basics otherwise.

This looks interesting.

I'm finally building new pc's and I want to turn one of the old ones into a file and media server for the home network.

Do you know where to get an old version of Plex that can be installed to this os without a plex account?

We are using Plex 1.25.8 on windows atm. The newer versions won't work with out setting up a plex account which I refuse to do as I only use it inside the LAN.

I'm impressed, it supported all of my current hardware right out of the box. I'll check out a Linux release (last was Mint) every couple of years to see how it's progressing and they're certainly getting there! I was testing this on my new MinisForum UM-790-Pro (Ryzen 9 7940HX processor) and it worked fine. The biggest issue with Linux has always been its lack of hardware support (drivers etc..), bit it even worked with my Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse over bluetooth. After playing around for a bit I restored my system back to Win 11 Pro but might have a more in depth look sometime down the road when I'll install it on it's own partition.

You don't need a PLEX account...just install PLEX and enjoy.

You can not set up plex on a windows PC with the current version of the software without creating and signing into an account.

If you do not sign into an account in the Plex app on Samsung TV, it will not save your settings.

I can't even install it in my RPI without signing into an account.

There is no "enjoy" with out giving up some privacy.

"If your not paying for the product, you are the product."
Aah, I see now that they changed this behavior for security reasons. There are workarounds but they might not work anymore.

What comes to the TV version, yeah, there is no workaround.

Sorry for the misinformation.

Will this run Windows apps?
Yes, but only some. It has a compatibility layer based on WINE. It also detects the app you're installing and if there's a Linux version it installs that instead of the Windows one. Also supports games designed for Windows. Same here, some will work, others not so much.

Sorry for the misinformation.

The workaround to setup a servers on a windows pc is the old 64 bit version of the software have archived. I just do an offline install then set it not to check for updates. I only use it for LAN anyways.

These changes are recent, the last year or two, and it's not for security, it's to invade your privacy.

I was hoping someone had a old version for linux archived they could share. I'm not in a rush, I'm still using the old pc as all my new parts have not arrived yet.

It's just a project I've been planning to repurpose one windows of the PC's I'm replacing.

I've a little experience with Linux so I understand basically how things work. Learning it again will be fun.

@Brink Do you also run a "LinuxForums" ?

I finally got the second PC activated, after 5 different Microsoft techs telling me I had to buy a new copy of windows becuase "The free upgrade (retail 7 to digital 10) was for that PC, you have to purchse a new key for new hardware".

Luckily I had enough spare parts to fire the "Activated" hardware back up and link it to a different account. Then it all worked ok.

Anyways..... Now that that old system is up and running it's time to put a new, non windows os on it.

I have a dedicated SSD on my Desktop for Linux.

After trying many Distros over the years, I feel that I have found one that works
best for me. No additional drivers required to for my ac wireless USB adapter.

When my families computers become obsolete with windows 10 in the next few year I will install UBUNTU CINNAMON

I tried it a few years ago and it was full of bugs - horrible experience. The thing that puts me off most Linux distro is there is nearly always some basic simple thing that doesn’t work - like taskbar icons disappearing or looking different sizes.

BINGO.

The only thing worse about the reliable bugginess of many Linux distros -- are the fanboys in their 'support' forums pretending you're the problem, not the distro.

There's a reason there's no Firefox OS: linux distros simply aren't stable. If Zorin was stable as Firefox I'd dive on it.

I have had decent success with ubuntu and zorin, but when there is an issue, which def happens more than windows, it's a pain in the you know what to fix. And yes the community is very "off" compared to windows forums which are usually very helpful.
