Solved 24H2 Update

So I've just discovered after being away from my computer for an hour or so that WU has decided to download and install 24H2 automatically. Up until now it was showing as optional, but I guess it's now just been forced on me. It's going to install pending a restart. Is there any way to stop it at this point or am I just going have to bite the bullet and let it install and hope nothing gets screwed up? I don't have a backup of my system prior to WU downloading 24H2.

Not sure if you can stop the installed update, but you can always revert back to previous version from Settings --> System --> Recovery --> Go Back.

No worries, just get it done.

The same thing happened here about 3 hours ago and have done some checks on potential problems with 24H2 which were a couple of installed applications and a couple of NAS boxes/SMB stuff.
The MS blocks were remove from my machine about 2 weeks ago, so the option was lounging in Windows updates.

No problems thus far, very smooth and quite quick, mostly due to the SSD of course.

As already mentioned you can revert back easily for up to 10 days after which Windows.old will be auto deleted.

Why do you want to stop it? What do you think it's going to do?

My Windows 11 laptop updated to 24H2 on December 5, 2024. Since then I have had six more updates. On update just this morning, plust a security update. I haven't had any issues with any of the updates. I think they actually fixed a few things.

Same thing has happened on my BeeLink Mini PC where I run 24H2 today. It's been showing as an optional update for a couple of weeks, and today when I woke it up it was showing a pending restart for a feature update.

This is mostly a test type lab box for me, so not too many concerns with the update. I just kicked it off a couple of minutes ago. So, I'll know in a while if anything goes sideways. I usually have pretty good luck with Windows updates, and this one has been around a while now, so not terribly concerned.

I haven't tried this myself, but I have read that You can usually avoid installing the Windows 11 24H2 update that is currently pending a restart by going to your Windows Update settings and choosing to "pause updates" for a set period of time; this will temporarily prevent the update from installing until the pause period ends. Certainly, no harm in giving it a shot.

I'm sure I've tried that in the past with other updates and they ended up being installed anyway and ignoring the pause period, but I've never tried it with a feature update, might be worth a shot.

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice.The main reason why I'm reluctant to install the update is that I've read a few threads on here about people's experiences with 24H2, and it sounds like a there's some issues with the update. The other reason being I wanted to update to 24H2 when I was ready and not having it sprung on me with no warning.

Update seemed to go just fine for me. Timeline wasn't that long, took about 25 minutes on the mini-pc with an NVMe drive.
12:50pm told it to reboot and install the update
12:55pm first reboot
1:09pm second reboot
1:11pm third reboot
1:14pm had my desktop

Hardly, You have had 3 months warning concurrently with 2 weeks of the 24H2 update sitting in Windows updates.

This almost always is from people with an array of system mods, and from a small number of Linux users whinging about everything Windows.
That has been going on tediously for decades.

6 hours further down the 24H2 update I would give MS some credit as when Microsoft Teams was clicked on it told me where to go in Settings to switch off the startup instance, which I did. Never seen that before, suited me being very strict on such things.

I've been using the machine all afternoon and into this evening and not having any problems whatsoever. Nothing really seems any different to me.

Not every computer has issues with Windows 11 24H2 and certainly not everyone has the same issues, unless they are known bugs already discussed in other threads. The best is clone the disk or make a full disk backup before installing 24H2, so you can go back if the system is totally screwed (very rare). At least copy your data to an external disk before restarting. Chances are it will complete the upgrade successfully with minor issues, if any which can be fixed. In worst case return to the previous version as suggested or restore from backup.

Just to update this, I tried pausing the updates as suggested by Sir_George in post #6 and it did indeed work, 24H2 was not installed.

I am planning to update to 24h2 at some point through an in place upgrade rather than through WU.

Downloading the ISO, disconnecting from the internet and upgrading offline, even for Windows 11 compliance systems, prevents Windows Update messing with your working drivers or installing updates that might fail and cause BSOD. After a successful upgrade you can reconnect and install drivers or whatever else.

Ran into a problem with 24H2 on my Beelink. Once I rebooted the box after using for awhile, it seems to be having problems pulling a DHCP address. I can see the icons in the lower right flipping between the network connected via cable and wifi. If I watch ipconfig from a command prompt, I can see that it pulls an IP from my DHCP, but then immediately drops it and it gets an APIPA range (169.254.x.x) and it goes back and forth. Most times it never connections, occasionally it will connect.

was able to solve the problem for the time being by setting a manual IP on my Beelink running WIndows 11 24H2. No other devices on my network are having problems pulling an IP. My Beelink also dual boots with Rocky Linux, and Rocky has no problems pulling an IP either.

Seems googling this issue with DHCP and 24H2 pulls up lots of people having problems since Oct/Nov or last year.

Don't suspect it's a driver, since my wireless is Intel, and my hardwire is Realtek and both are impacted. And all i working fine as long as I use a static IP address.

Probably some recent Windows Update then? I read that the last cumulative update caused too many issues including disconnections from the WiFi. I immediately uninstalled it from my PC and I blocked it with Windows Update Show/Hide Tool. If this tool doesn't work on your system, you can use a third-party tool such as Windows Automatic Updates Manager (WAU Manager). Both tools are available from Major Geeks.

On Wednesday, my box automatically got the 24H2 update without me actively choosing to install it. I just went ahead with it since it was installed on the box already. It seemed to work fine on Wednesday, but I never rebooted after it came up after the upgrade. Yesterday, was at work and a work meeting all evening, so didn't touch the box.

Today, woke it up from sleep and noticed I didn't have any internet. Ultimately rebooted it, and noticed it was going back and forth between hardwired and wifi. Icon kept changing in the taskbar. A repeated ipconfig from cmd showed an IP from my LAN, then no IP, then an apipa address and then a local lan, and then no ip, and then an apipa range and it kept going back and forth. Sometimes after 2-3 minutes, it would come up and stay up. I'd reboot and go through the same back and forth for 20+ minutes with it never stabilizing.

I just set it to a static IP address and now it's back to working fine. So, something off in the stack getting an IP from DHCP. Since it's just the 1 PC in my house, this is acceptable to me as a workaround for the time being.
