Solved Add windows 11 to dual boot windows 7 and 10

I have already dual boot windows 7 and 10 and it works fine Recently I needed to install windows 11 because of a software requirement so I found a hard drive with Windows 11 preinstalled The description was saying that I don't need any license because it is using the one on the pc so I thought that may be easier than getting a disk and dealing with the installation

Anyway so I was not sure if it was going to work so I unplugged the other drives in case something may go wrong So the installation went well no issues at all so the main problem I am trying to solve is how to add it to the dual boot I already have
I plugged in the other drives but for some reason when I use the disk manager in windows 11 it does not see the other drives and when I use the disk manager from windows 7 it does not see the windows 11

Perhaps I should have left the other drives connected when I installed the windows 11 but not sure if that would have made a difference
Another problem I have now is that when I run windows 7 it always runs chkdsk which takes a long time so I would like to fix that back to normal at some point

The main question is how to add the windows 11 to the other boot menu if that is possible Most videos I saw were showing hot to dual boot as part of windows installation not something that was already preinstalled

Thanks I heard about that I was just a little hesitant to use it as I was concerned that it may change the modify the way it is currently booting Currently after it passes bios the next step is just a black screen that shows all the installed os's so I can just use the keyboard to go up or down to select the os I want to use

I could be wrong but from what I have seen with the easybcd the way it looks is some kind of blue GUI interface and you select it with the mouse but it's not clear to me (perhaps someone can confirm) if this is before or after windows loads I would not like boot into windows and than select the os as that will be a waste of time If this GUI is before windows loads that would be ok

I am currently trying to fix the chkdsk that keeps running when booting windows 7

So I used easybcd and added the Windows 11 to the boot menu but now when I run windows 11 it bypasses the boot menu and goes directly into windows 11 so I can't switch back to windows 7 since there is no boot menu unless I select the drive from bios

You should use EasyBCD to add the OTHER disk's boot entry in Windows 11 boot menu. Run it again, undo any changes you did before and then run it from Windows 11 to add Windows 7 and 10 boot entries to Windows 11 boot menu.

When I setup my dual boot system I used EasyBCD and it worked perfectly. On my main computer I run the Canary builds as my daily OS. When I installed Win 11 24H2 I removed my NVMe drive before doing the install. Once I had it setup I reinstalled the NVMe drive and booted into the Canary build. From there I used EasyBCD to add 24H2 to the boot menu. I did it that way because the NVMe drive is the boot device listed in the BIOS. I did have a little trouble switching the OS drives at first but I think the problem was because I forgot to turn off Fast Startup in Windows. Another thing I did was to hide the drive with the other OS in each Windows versions so I can't accidently access the OS partition on the other drive. All of my data is on drive D: so I don't need to access the other OS drive.

The OP probably booted in Windows 10 and tried to add Windows 11. This won't work. He must undo that and boot into Windows 11 and add Windows 10/7 using EasyBCD.

When I am in windows 11 I see all the other os's Are you saying to delete them save it and reboot than add them back in ?
What is this going to so to the boot menu ? Is it going to boot differently ?

In that case you may not need to change the Windows boot menu. Go in BIOS (aka UEFI Firmware) and change the boot priority so that the Windows 11 disk has higher priority and always boots in Windows 11. Then try to select Windows 10 or 7 from the boot menu. If it works, you are done.

Well that is the problem if I set it to windows 11 it bypasses the boot menu or at least it does not come up so I have to hit F11 to select the boot but that is selecting it from the bios not from the boot menu so that is the workaround I am using at the moment It's like windows 11 wants to be in control once I load it

You need to turn off Windows 11 fast startup. The easiest way is in a command prompt with admin run:

powercfg -h off

Actually I have to correct myself The boot menu is working now it was just that Windows 11 is so painfully slow plus I extended the timeout so I hit F11 before the boot menu shows up but I can reduce it now that it is working

So the only thing is left is this chkdsk that always runs when I switch to windows 7

This means that Windows 7 doesn't complete the shutdown or restart process properly. Update your drivers, check if any application is stuck during shutdown so the disk is not marked OK. There is a special flag that marks the disk OK just before turning off the computer. If it is not marked OK, Windows assume there was not a proper shutdown and the disk may contain logical errors due to incomplete read/write sessions. That's why they force a check disk before loading. Also you must let the check disk to finish. If you interrupt it to load Windows faster, the disk is never marked OK and it will attempt to check it again at next boot.

You need to turn off the fast startup in Windows. Not the fast boot in the BIOS.

I managed to fix the problem with chkdsk running always at boot time so I can boot to windows 7 normally I am just afraid that if I run windows 11 it will overwrite something and will have the chkdsk running again So I will keep it like this for a while before trying to speed up windows 11

2.5 min to boot to the desktop and than another 10 seconds for the taskbar to show up I don't know how anyone can work with this That is horrible
I don't know maybe everyone just leaves it running 24/7 Even just opening a file or the browser takes about 10-15 seconds

What was done to fix chdsk runs?

See if clean boot reduces boot times.

Make sure that windows fast startup is off.

Is that when you boot Windows 11? If it is, what is the RPM speed of the HDD? If it' 5400 RPM that would explain the slow performance. For better performance you need a 7200 RPM drive or even better, an SSD.

No, you use it to set up your boot menu. It's a one-time thing. No need to interface with it during the boot process.
It's simply a tool used to make configuring the Boot Configuration Data easier.

In the Edit Boot Menu tab, the OS with the check mark is the default OS, and that's the OS the computer will boot into without
any interaction from you.

And not everyone sees the slow performance you do. My computer boots to desktop in 20 seconds is is ready to use.
Any application I use, including browsers, launch instantaneously.

If we are talking about a typical mechanical 2.5" SATA disk, then these were 5400 rpm and they indeed needed 2-3 minutes to boot. Remember there are always worse. To speedup the laptop replace the mechanical disk with a 2.4" SATA SSD. It will be over 10 times faster, it will feel like you got a new laptop. Also RAM helps. If it is 2GB or lower, it explains the slow boot. Make it 4GB and there is a noticeable difference in boot time and performance in general.
