Solved Asus driver questions

I've been having a problem installing drivers with a new build using newer Asus motherboards. I've found a few posts from other people who have had the issue. However, I've been unable to understand why the issue occurs.

So in my case I built the computer (12700k cpu, ddr5 memory - default settings at this time, samsung 980pro 2tb nvme). I have not added graphics or any other components yet. Nothing on the other headers. Just a power switch. Just the basics on my test bench. My first attempt was with an Asus Z690-i motherboard. I returned it and picked up an Asus B760-i.

In both builds I ran into the same problem. When I go to the Asus website and download all the drivers (Windows 10). I use 7zip and unpack the different drivers. Almost all of them wont execute. I click on the Asussetup.exe, Windows asks me to allow it to run, I click yes, and then it immediately closes and doesnt execute. The device manager shows no changes to the drivers. I've tried using different downloads from different browsers. Unpacked the files using different programs (7zip, windows extractor). Used different USB sticks to transfer files to the new computers. Updated BIOS, system time, etc. I even found a vague thread about disabling hyperthreading and using auto XMP profiles to help prevent extraction errors. Nothing has changed the failed driver install.

So I began suspecting that maybe one of my hardware components was having an issue. I've so far used a different motherboard, different memory, different SSD in various attempts to pin down the culprit. The 12700k cpu is the same I started with though.

I also, tried using the drivers from the CD. Some of those will execute, some wont.

I can use the windows driver update to grab some of the drivers from the extracted folders (lan, wireless).

I've installed your recommended chipset driver, and that installed just fine.

I now suspect / assume its simply Asus's drivers themselves which are the issue.

So my question would be --> Is my issue with the asus drivers common ? Do you happen to know the cause or why the drivers fail dont work ?

Or would the failing drivers I'm experiencing indicate I do have a hardware problem ?

I've never run into driver issues like this before, so it has really thrown me for a loop, and trying to track down the reason has been draining to say the least.

I've even run memtest to test memory stability. Even though I cant guarantee it, it seems like me hardware is all behaving properly / I dont think I have defective parts. Though the CPU is my last option which I havent tested too extensively.

Thank you for any input and insights !!!

Why are you using 7Zip? I just download the installation file from the Asus web site and run that directly.

Hi @WarZ

A couple of questions.
1. When you updated the bios did you enable the default settings (usually hit F5) and reboot?
2. Confirm you're not using Armoury Crate? It is very buggy.

Both my last two desktop builds going back 5 years had Asus motherboards (one AMD the current one Intel) and I've never had major driver issues with Asus stuff. I also have a brand-new Asus laptop and the same applies.

I would in the meantime consider disabling the XMP profiles for the ram in the bios while you are diagnosing these issues.

Also re running the AsusSetup.exe file, right click select Properties and make sure Unblock box is ticked. Then try running the file with admin rights. It might help.

I've installed your recommended chipset driver, and that installed just fine.

Just in case since you've mentioned some executing and some not, be certain you are installing all of these drivers from the extracted folder, that is the plain looking folders, those without the zipper in the icon as these are the extracted file folders. You should have in your Downloads folder two folders of the same name, one with a zipper, one without and execute from the one without the zipper. I know this is basic but sometimes we all make mistakes.

Why are you using 7Zip? I just download the installation file from the Asus web site and run that directly.
The driver files you download from Asus always come in .zip format.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
The driver files you download from Asus always come in .zip format.
With my Asus Z790 board the zip driver files, most when extracted require a cmd file to be run (install.cmd). A very small number have the AsusSetup.exe that must be run. With my board there are a heap of motherboard drivers and only one from memory uses the aforementioned exe file.

I think you need to extract them. I see posts about errors if you don't. I got them too as I tried that to test.

In my experience those Asus drivers that are zipped must be extracted before installing.

Yes upon bios update I did default values.

I've left the memory to auto, no xmp.

I'm avoiding armory crate, so haven't tried yet. I won't use the board if I'm forced into that software to make it work.

I'll try the box tick later today.

It seems i can get the drivers from different locations. Im mostly trying to understand if asus drivers are like this or maybe i have a hardware issue.

Thanks 😊

I have had this issue before a time. I believe it was Asus software or registry entry, cant remember how I fixed it. I don't think it is hardware.

Are all of your drivers successfully loaded in device manager (no yellow bangs)? What Asus software is currently installed?

Wanted to provide an update to help someone in the future.

It looks like the issue was a permissions type thing. Or maybe limited ability of installer to identify or direct to OS location.

I stumbled into a post where one possible solution was "put driver file on desktop, then extract to desktop, then run asussetup from that folder on the desktop". So I tried it.

And it worked.

Asussetup.exe's now fully run, and the driver installers were showing interfaces, installing, and drivers updating.

Such a stupid limitation. This is the first time I've ever encountered this. But I have been building with asrock for the last 15-20 years so didn't realize how janky asus has become.

I encountered this because I've always partitioned my main drive into an OS partition and a data partition. Makes reinstall, reimaging, and data recovery far easier. My drivers & various new install files would be on the data partition.
