And I definitely agree sending an item back for warranty service is nightmare as you could end up getting a "refurb" back when you bought a new item. That's the one thing I fear when sending something back for repair - getting a refurb back

Trust me. You have a problem with your system board and you try to RMA with ASUS you are practically guarunteed a refurb replacement board. Been there, done that, and never again.

For DDR4 any speed higher than 2133MHz is considrered being overclocked. So strictly speaking your warranty could be voided if you ran RAM higher than that. Since most non-OEM motherboards have settings for XMP or its equivalent then the warranty claim is meaningless.

There are a lot of ways to push your motherboard where you could potentially damage it. Overclocking is one way to do that. However, using XMP is not one that a manufacturer will ever be able to use to void your warranty.

Correct. XMP is an Intel feature that is primarily the business of Intel. That doesn't many that system board manufacturers won't try to weasel out of liability for defective system boards. They can try. As a rule, I will never flash a BIOS marked "beta" as this option is targeted to enthusiasts who have little to loose for their curiosity. For those who have the money and hardware to burn they're welcome to it but anything beta is strictly in the realm of experimentation. My DDR4 on my work station runs fine @ 2400 MHz. Alas, I've forgotten what the latency on this B-Die is. I have to say that it's pretty much the best durn B-Die I've ever owned. (Corsair Dominator) Too bad Corsair makes so much trash RAM these days. Only one more company that has gone from excellence to mediocre.

That’s what Seagate do with external drives. Even says it in their conditions. I think that is pretty screwed up.

I'm running 32gig DDR4 Dominator RAM @3600mhz. B-Die. XMP enabled. Been running that way since built in 2019. See system specs.

But you can fight it since Intel supports it, RAM vendors guarantee it, and... those very board vendors support it

Western Digital plays the same game with external drives and mechanical hard drives in general.

I'm finding that with mechanical drives these days I had to establish some personal rules:

1) Avoid prebuilts. Get a caddy and buy a better drive. Caddies are more flexible and if it dies you can pull the drive and still access the data.
2) Avoid buying Western Digital mechanical hard drives. Yes, there are some good ones out there. They're rare and they are very costly.
3) Avoid all SMR mechanical hard drives. CMR has proven itself time and time again to be more reliable than SMR.
4) Avoid mechanical hard drives if you're looking for a fast drive. Exceptions to this are few and far between.
5) Avoid purchasing mechanical drives under 1TB. One of the chief reasons why people still purchase mechanical hard drives is because they provide more capacity at a cheaper price. If you're looking to get a 500 GB drive you may as well get an SSD because they cost nearly the same price as a mechanical drive. Plus I have had dozens of 500 GB Seagate hard drives fail on me. These are the "slimline" variety and they were horrible to use. I think I might have one left that still functions. Western Digital, from my experience, is no better, but I'm thinking this has more to do with SMR vs CMR.

I expect to see the quality of mechanical drives to continue to drop as SSDs become increasingly popular. Reliable mechanical drives are expensive to make, it's vintage hardware, and materials to make them will also become increasingly more difficult to acquire. I imagine there will be a niche for these drives for the next 20 years or so but for the most part these drives are on their way down obsoletion row.

Corsair... A name that has been sold so many times they don't even know who they are anymore.
What a shame! Back in the day Corsair used to be the pinnacle of quality.
I got good support from Corsair once and I'll pass it on here... The guy on the phone told me, "don't buy Corsair".
That literally came out of the mouth of a Corsair rep so there it is.

Thanks for pointing this out. It was a typo prob due to a Freudian slip. Was supposed to read, "That doesn't mean that system board manufacturers won't try to weasel out of liability" ...

And I agree. They can try but they don't have a leg to stand on. You have me curious now. I'm an old guy and my memory isn't what it used to be. (No pun intended.) I'm going to reboot the old Work Station here and see exactly what my XMP on my DDR4 Dominator is. Never had a problem with this RAM. I'll get back to you on this.

Yes.
I recently bought one of these to try, it seems to be doing OK. Except the fan, when turned on, is a quite noisy. But I only turn it on when it’s busy.


I also have quite a few of these that I have placed Samsung EVO’s in. Because I’d never buy a Seagate external again, ever. Or WD for that matter.

So, my bad. It looks like I had given the memory a mild over clocking. I have a lot of drives on this rig so I don't want to mess with it too much. I already have the CPU OC'd from 3.2 base to 4.1. If memory serves me correctly (I mean my own personal memory) overclocking 128 GB of RAM can prove tricky at times. I'm content with this for the time present but I have little doubt that it could run @ higher frequencies. This is probably the best dawgone RAM Corsair ever sold.




Latencies are 14-16-16 so I might want to tighten those up a little at some point. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.

You can simply use CPU-Z to see what your memory is capable of....



Here it shows what my RAM capable of and running @3600MHz (dual channel @ 2x1800MHz). You can also see what version of XMP your board supports. Here mine is XMP 2.0. Also note the XMP supported speed indicated on the second CPU-Z image (SPD tab).

Yup. I thought about it but thought I'd give it to you direct instead. I actually have screen shots someplace of this thing posted via the CPUZ web page. Didn't feel like digging. My Team Group B-Die runs @ 3666MHz with a CAS Latency of 15-15-15 which is not too shabby for 32GHz.

Good man. Seagate wants you to use their firmware and software in those things for data recovery but when I put my tin foil hat on I see things:
Things like how the pharmaceutical industry wants you to stay strong and healthy so you don't have to buy their product anymore. Things like it is wise to trade off liberty and options for security.

Then I take off my tin foil hat and say naaaw, they can keep it. I have both U Green and Sabrent too. Had three Sabrent enclosures die on me. My U Green keeps on running and it doesn't even have a fan. Same drive in the U Green that was in the Sabrents. Can't blame the drive.

Interesting. It's my first Sabrent. Ugreen I buy often, their USB products seem to be really good. Cables, USB to USB-C, Casings etc

I own a few Ugreen products. They have all served me well for years. Sometimes it is still possible to find quality at an affordable price.

CPU-Z is "direct"

Anyway, my point, and ONLY point, and not just for you... is you don't need to go into the BIOS to get said info.
