@antspants Yes it could most definitely be related to modern standby and it has been my suspicion from the get-go that it is. Modern standby.... the bane of modern laptop owners' existence.
To the OP I suggest you make sure you are running the latest bios from your OEM. Also make sure ALL drivers are current. I suggest using Lenovo System Update app for this purpose. If your system is new it should be on your laptop already.

Also if your system is still under warranty you might consider contacting Lenovo Support.

Agree with all that, especially with the firmware as I suspect it’s possibly out of date. I was hoping to see if the OP is Robinson Crusoe and research if others with the same laptop have experienced the same thing, and also to check on the latest firmware/BIOS. But my request for the model was ignored.
I can’t see the thread listed anymore, only ended up back here due to you tagging me. 🙏

@flick I wanted to assure myself that hibernate was off, which it is.
I would suggest looking at Control Panel/Power Options/Change plan settings for the selected one/change advanced power settings : and just check every one of those for anything odd.

When you say crash, I believe you are saying it won't wake up, even if you tap the power button, or have a wired mouse connected to the always on USB port in the back (if it has one of those)(and it isn't shut off in the BIOS)(I went through 3 or 4 Lenovos over a decade or so).

I actually was thinking about getting the latest bios since they just released last month. Basically right after the fresh windows installation, made to sure get latest drivers for it.

Flick, some tutorials here. Sometimes it’s a good idea to know why you’re doing things and what doing some things actually does.

thanks, definitely, I will look into these

So, apparently there are also sleep mode settings in your Laptops BIOS.

It pay to check the BIOS. Ultimatly, it never hurts to just reset your BIOS to defaults. Depending on if you have made any specific changes in your BIOS that you want to keep, you could always reset to defaults then readd your changes.

Here are some tips from AI regarding your BIOS configuration for Sleep states.

Sleep mode settings for your ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 within the BIOS, you'll need to enter the BIOS menu, navigate to the "Config" section, and then select "Power" to adjust settings like sleep behavior and wake-up options

Accessing the BIOS Menu:
  • Restart your computer: and repeatedly press the F1 key or Fn+F1 as soon as you see the Lenovo logo.
  • You might also see a message on the screen prompting you to press Enter to interrupt the boot process, which will then lead to the Startup Interrupt Menu, where you can press F1 to enter the BIOS.

2. Navigating to Power Settings:
  • Once in the BIOS, use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Config" section.
  • Within the "Config" section, select "Power" to access power-related settings.

3. Configuring Sleep Mode Settings:
  • Sleep Behavior:
You can configure how the system behaves when entering sleep mode (e.g., whether it goes into a deep sleep state or a lighter standby state).

  • Wake-up Options:
You can also set how the system wakes up from sleep mode, such as by pressing a key, moving the mouse, or using the power button.

  • Always On USB and Charge in Battery Mode:
These settings allow you to enable USB charging even when the computer is in sleep or hibernation mode.

  • Reset Power Plan:
You can reset the power plan to achieve the best balance between performance and power saving.

4. Other BIOS Settings:
  • Always On USB and Charge in Battery Mode:
These settings allow you to enable USB charging even when the computer is in sleep or hibernation mode.
  • Reset Power Plan:
You can reset the power plan to achieve the best balance between performance and power saving.

5. Saving and Exiting:
  • After making your desired changes, save the settings and exit the BIOS by selecting the appropriate option (usually "Exit" or "Save and Exit").
  • Your computer will then restart with the new settings applie

There is a thread at Lenovo that spanned a few years (2017 - 2021) that is a similar issue to yours. It could still be relevant.
One of the things blamed was Intel Management Engine Frimware

There is a criticle update for this driver:

I think, due to what it seems are many recent driver updates for your system, that you utilise the software on your Thinkpad (is it Lenovo vantage?) and run a full update check. But certainly update the two above mentioned drivers (and that display driver update).

Also, if checking on-line instead, it’s always a good idea to enter your serial number in the space provided so as to ensure you’re actually getting exactly what you need.

It pay to check the BIOS. Ultimatly, it never hurts to just reset your BIOS to defaults. Depending on if you have made any specific changes in your BIOS that you want to keep, you could always reset to defaults then readd your changes.

- Oh yeah :-), that's the way I usually do it, enter in the serial number and looks for any updates for driver. Thinking of that, I never
checked the bios setting after getting the laptop.

- I did not get to check out that thread, but realizing I should have done so from the beginning. I will get this updated. Also, would you advice this should be unchecked for the "allow the computer to turn off..''

- To be honest, I haven't taken advantage of the Lenovo Vantage, will have in the work list to download and do a full update check. So far the latest version of the LM driver seems to be installed.

By the end of today, I am going to upgrade it to the latest bios. Also, install other critical updates for the driver. will keep you guys posted on the changes.
In terms of the yubico key, I have configured for the login for windows according to the guide and for any MFA purposes
Yubico Login for Windows Configuration Guide

I am still uncertain if the problem is likely due to this yubico configuration, but based on the logs and occcurence, started from mid March. Yubico log-in was installed in Feb

Quick update,

I attempted to upgrade the BIOS to V1.39 via Update Utility GUI, following the instruction, installation went fine, fairly quick one. However, upon checking System Information, the changes did not apply. Should I go through the steps again and retry it ?

Hope you get to the bottom of this @flick. I had a very similar issue with my desktop PC last year and it took months to track down what it was. In my case it was settings related to the GPU.
