Dell Support Assist & Dell PC Software for Dell Inspiron One 2020

While on the subject of Support Assist, is Support Assist for Business any better or does it still cause problems?

@pseymour . Dell have confirmed that Dell Update will be "unsupported " at the end of this month with functions being taken over by SA. SA and Dell Update are linked as a check by Dell Update for drivers is reflected as a driver check in SA. After running Dell Update and then checking for updates on SA it takes a couple of seconds as the check has already been done. It's likely that future updates to SA will sever any link and Dell Update will wither. Mitch.

Latest Dell Support Assist is Version 4.8.2.29006.
Unfortunately, it does not fix the recent problem that started on April 11, 2025, only with Canary Build 27823.1000.
I even tried a clean install of Canary 27823.1000 and then installed Dell Support Assist Version 4.8.2.29006. I ended up with the same error that I 1st saw with Version 4.6.3 on April 11.

Here are the outputs of the event viewer for the errors occurring with 4.6.3 and 4.8.2 on Canary 27823.
You can see that it is the same Faulting Application SupportAssistClientUI.exe version 4.3.0.0 in both cases.

Dell Support Assist here was 4.6.3.

Dell Support Assist on this one is 4.8.2 and the Faulting Application is still the same SupportAssistClientUI.exe version 4.3.0.0 that was used before the latest update to 4.8.2.
This below was after a clean install of Canary Build 27823.1000.

I do have Dell SupportAssist installed on it, and when I ran the application today, it notified me that there was an update for it. So, I did the update of the software app. Did the usual. The first time, it did a duplicate update, but after I ran the update again as it asked, it didn't ask again for another update. That computer was not compatible with Windows 11. But I bypassed the requirements with Rufus, and I will say that it runs Windows 11 quite well. I have had no problems with it, really. It's even running the most current Windows 11 build.

DSA is useless bloatware which I would avoid. It caused BSODs on a friend's laptop I fixed and was hard to remove.

The idea about testing with Windows insider builds is to catch the problems before they reach the general public. 🤷‍♂️

On April 21, 2025, this error was no longer happening with Canary Build 27823 on my Dell XPS 8930.
I will try to see if it was fixed also on the other DESKTOP XPS 8940.
Not sure who fixed the problem. Was it Dell or MS?
After it started working without the crash, I got an update from Dell too. See the Plugin below.

Where can I find older versions of Dell Support Assist and other Dell PC related software that is more compatible with the Dell Inspiron 2020? It runs great, is fast, and has no issues running Windows 11 Version 24H2. It's just the most recent Dell software do not work right and act buggy.

Thanks for your help,
Jesse
@jessewilliams56
It should be known versions 4.5.0 and prior, contain a symbolic link (symlink) attack vulnerability :
github.com/advisories/GHSA-xvw3-fvp9-cwjw

Dell SupportAssist for Home PCs versions 4.6.1 and prior and Dell SupportAssist for Business PCs versions 4.5.0 and prior, contain a symbolic link (symlink) attack vulnerability in the software remediation component. A low-privileged authenticated user could potentially exploit this vulnerability, gaining privileges escalation, leading to arbitrary deletion of files and folders from the system.

VERY DANGEROUS & NOT RECOMMENDED

On April 21, 2025, this error was no longer happening with Canary Build 27823 on my Dell XPS 8930.
I will try to see if it was fixed also on the other DESKTOP XPS 8940.
Not sure who fixed the problem. Was it Dell or MS?
After it started working without the crash, I got an update from Dell too. See the Plugin below.

Still the same crash on DELL XPS 8940 with the same Canary Build 27823.1000. 😝🤬🤷‍♂️

I would say MS fixed it as in 24H2 Beta 26120.3863, I downloaded the Dell-SupportAssist-OS-Recovery-Plugin-for-Dell-Update_14K57_WIN64_5.5.13.2_A00.EXE two days ago which is new only in being available but it was already made in August 30, 2022 (see screenshot), and the Support Assist still would close after the splash screen. After reading about you getting Support Assist working, it opens fine now.

I only have the problem with Canary Build 27823.1000, never had any issues with any 24H2 Builds. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

If "Dell Inspiron 2020" is supposed to denote the year, then I imagine that Dell is likely no longer putting out updates for this system. Typically, the OEMs stop supplying updates in a lot less than 5 years.

For such systems that are no longer receiving updates, I do this:

1) I make sure that the system is up to date by manually installing all the latest version of all drivers from the OEM web site (Dell in this case).

2) Allow Windows update to apply any hardware updates that it may have.

3) OPTIONAL, but can make the amount of data saved in step 4 considerably smaller. Run Driver Store Explorer (aka RAPR) to delete old versions of drivers that may still be present on the system.

4) Export ALL system drivers by running these 2 commands:

MD C:\Drivers_Backup
pnputil /export-driver * C:\Drivers_Backup

5) Save the folder "C:\Drivers_Backup" to a safe place such as a flash drive, external HDD, etc.

6) If you ever reinstall Windows, right after reinstall, simply open Device Manager, right-click the name of the computer at the top of the device tree, choose to add drivers. Point to the drivers you saved. This will reinstall ALL drivers in one step.

NOTE: On an older machine like this, the only real driver updates I typically see are display, bluetooth, and WiFi. Every few months, I will simply re-export my drivers to make sure that I have all the latest.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.
