Desktop PC Freezing yet powered on.

suatcini54:
I'm now on day 6 of the reverted Nvidia driver. I haven't had one freeze up this week. I'm becoming optimistic that putting back the older driver has corrected the problem

Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions here. This really is a great place to get help.
Hi.
Glad to hear your issue seems to have gone. Happy computing.

UPDATE:
So....... I'm sorry to report ......... the machine is still freezing with no particular pattern. The reversion to an earlier NVidia driver has not solved the issue. It goes maybe 10 days and freezes. Then it may freeze two days in a row. Then goes days and then freezes. I can only assume it is now the motherboard or the CPU. When it freezes I can unplug my keyboard, mouse, even display adapters and re-plug. Zero response. The "lights are on, but no one is home". Power is running but zero response to any stimulus except the reset button. Sigh.......

Sorry to hear your freezing issue is back.

Let's do some mind exercise:

In your post #11, you wrote that you ran memtest for 10 hours without your screen freezing. This means your hardware is installed properly and you don't have faulty hardware, I believe.

In your post #15, you wrote that you checked CMOS battery but you haven't mentioned what voltage you have found. Anyway, even if you found the voltage value was O.K., that doesn't mean the CMOS battery is good. You measured the voltage under no load condition and found it to be 3 volts or over. But the CMOS battery with voltage over 3 volts cannot output any current if it is depleted. Therefore, I advise you to replace the battery.

I still suspect the graphic drivers. Can you uninstall the graphics drivers in Safe Mode using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) ? I give you the link: News (Sorry the DDU download page starts with News. Hence the link title)

This driver uninstallation in safe mode removes all traces of previous driver residuals and gives your PC a fresh start.

If you decide to do so, please read the tutorial at How to use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) Guide / Tutorial

If you don't feel comfortable using DDU, don't do it because, whatever you do, is at your own risk.

Hope this helps.

suatcini54:
Thank you very much for your continued interest in my problem.
As to the CMOS battery, when I had the system open to swap out the boot SSD I did take out the CMOS battery. I installed a fresh battery at that time just to be sure. I did test the new battery at 3.x V before installing it. I'm comfortable that this battery is good.

I'll look into the full uninstall of the drivers using DDU to see if that helps.

But on another note, we put our home on the market for sale last Wednesday and it sold on Saturday. The problem is we don't have a new home purchased to go to. So life will be a little tumultuous for a bit and I'll try to get to it as time permits.

In our market we can't buy unless we sell and no one wants to sell to someone who hasn't sold yet. Lost out on two great opportunities so far. So we're taking the chance one will come up soon..

Will let you know how the driver reinstall goes.

Here's what Revo Uninstaller shows is on my machine:
