My wife bought me a Samsung NVMe 970 Pro 500 GB for my birthday. While installing it I leaned agaist my GPU and ther was a little crack. The machine wouldnt boot after that so my latest, albeit unexpected, upgrade was a Prime Z490-P and a i7 10700 which I am happy to say works very well.

Right now we have one cat and two dogs or as I call them our babies and they are rescues. In fact every pet that we have had were all rescues. Because of where we live most of them were dropped off in the middle of the night.

Bit of a tough discussion for me.

I had to have my rescue dog, some sort of Bichon mix, put down just two weeks ago. He was the first dog I've said goodbye to in my adult life. He was only about 11, but had poorly controlled diabetes for the past 6+ years. My senior dog (mini poodle, 15) is blind (cataracts, which are fixable, plus a degenerating retina, which isn't) and mostly deaf. I suspect that he has a touch of CDS (cognitive dysfunction syndrome, aka doggie dementia). I may be dog-less in the not too distant future.

I always look on the bright side. Without two small white dogs, fewer people will think I'm gay. (I'm not. Downright morose a lot of the time.

)

Seriously though - sorry you had to go through that - nothing quite as cringe-worthy as knowing you just mangled a perfectly good piece of hardware.

My last rig, a Core i7 965 EE based machine with an X58 mobo - I fried the vast majority of my USB by trying to fix my Netgear router via JTag - I used instructions online that showed the pin-out config, and made my own JTAG to USB - only the pins were wrongly described in the post, and it fried my boards USB and whatever remnants of the router that I had. So I feel your pain - it was my own negligence that took the word of the post online without using a meter to verify the pinout on the JTag.

At least their suffering has ended and will end. I can't stand animals in pain.

Ironically the graphics card survived but the motherboard took the hit and had to be replaced, as it was a fairly old M/B I wasnt too bothered but the wife just tutted and walked away :)

2) Asus X299-A II Prime, Core i9-10920X
either with 32-64GB Crucial memory and a Cooler Master or Noctua fan
Any thoughts constructive or destructive are welcome.

I've just been forced into getting an upgrade to my current desktop due to issues with the motherboard, [and other linked components], following a recent power surge/cut.

Mine is primarily for Photo processing and editing so no fancy graphics as processing is mainly performed by the main processor

I have ordered a replacement from Chillblast which will hopefully be here in two weeks or so

Note I'll be repurposing some additional hardware to finish off the build - I have two eight TB Hard Disks ready for storage and a 500GB SSD and 32GB M2 Optane memory unit as speed buffers for data processing, and I have my first WiFi 6 / Bluetooth 5 PCIe card

Until it arrives I'm "stuck" with my laptop, a Dell XPS 17 9700

I will give Windows 11 a few months to mature until I consider installing anything other than a VM install but both systems easily meet the "minimum" requirements

And now for something completely different:

AMD X570 motherboard with a 3000 or 5000 series Ryzen. PCI-E 4.0 NVME SSD. I believe that neither Intel chipset you list is supposed to be ready for PCI-E 4.0 prime time. (I admit that the speed difference between 3 and 4 would manifest mainly in benchmarks, rather than real world applications.) I'm not sure how much you'd lose with AMD not supporting quad channel RAM, like the X299 Intel chipset. (The Z590 is only dual channel.)

I'm not a fan of AMD or Intel. I have used both in the past. My main PC is all Team Red (AMD CPU, AMD GPU) at this time.

IMHO, future proofing is a bit of a pipe dream, unless you're referring to a time horizon of a year or two.

I would use the Intel Core i9 10900K has a base clock speed of 3.7 GHz Max Turbo and has a TBMT 3.0 Clock speed of 5.3 GHz, which is actually faster in terms of base clock than the Core i9 11900K.

For cooling this CPU beast I would recommend the iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX Liquid CPU Cooler 360mm .
I would NEVER use just a fan to keep this CPU cool...would never work. You need a really good CPU AIO cooler...
I'm not a big fan of anything made by Cooler Master....

I was thinking I'd upgrade my4-year old ASUS Prime x370 socket AM4 with a Ryzen 7-1700 8-core to a AMD RYZEN 9 3900X 12-Core 3.8 GHz which according to ASUS will work. I use Photoshop as well.

You probably already know this, but make sure that you've updated the BIOS to a version that supports the X3900 before swapping it in. (4801 or later for the 3900X, 5220 or later for the 3900XT. The latest is 5603. These are all for the X370-Pro.)

I see that the motherboard supports fTPM. I don't know if that presents TPM 2.0, but I'd guess yes.

Well, I was thinking of getting another machine that met all the specs, and had already started looking for used laptops that would fit the bill. But running an in-place upgrade with the 22000.51 ISO said that it would install (keeping apps and files) on two of my machines tha are below spec, both with secure boot, one with TPM 2.0 and a 6th gen i7, the other with TPM 1.2 and a 4th gen i7. I istalled and tested it on the 6th gen machine, worked perfectly, so I'm not so sure now.

My (mis- ?) understanding is that the dev build will install on hardware that doesn't comply with the stated requirements for the release version. And that such machines will be expected to go back to 10 when 11 is released. (Is MS going to kill the dev builds, or give them an expiration date? Winver shows nothing like that for 22000.51, and no watermark.)

I don't know what to suggest if you want an 11 experience that continues past release. Will there be a big crush of upgraders? Will some of them be foolish enough to retire upgradeable machines? No idea.
