Solved Help me change Outlook from IMAP to POP

Here's the Folders view:

You can see I deleted all the synch stuff.

Note that for the calendar and contacts, there are two and one is labeled "This computer only." That makes me think I never really got rid of the previous file.

FYI, the Contacts folder for "This computer only" has all my contacts, but the similar calendar file doesn't have all my appointments.

When I expand that arrow to the left of Inbox, I see all the folders from long ago. In one folder, I have all the records from a 2018 insurance claim, and in another, I can see stuff I ordered from Dell as far back as 2006. I probably don't need the Dell info, but in some of the folder's there's stuff I need.

Still working on other questions.

Thanks for taking care of me. I should have been more careful.

There are no OST files in the AppData folder.

After my wife goes to bed, I'm going to walk through the whole process again. Infact, I'll probably do it with more than one of the old PST files.

There are no OST files in the AppData folder. It took me a minute or 2 to find the folder. I had to tell Windows to show the hidden folders. I normally don't frequent those locations.

After my wife goes to sleep, I will walk through the whole process again, carefully, to make sure I didn't leave out any steps. I might even do it for more than one PST.

You could do that, you dont really need the images in my list but you could always refer back, meaning you could print my steps without needing the images to help you rather than switch screens.

Otherwise we can just go about cleaning up this current PST file.

Also, the reason you cant see the emails, I think, is because your view is wrong.
You have it in Folders View, that’s good (y)
I believe you need to have the right side of your Outlook screen set properly in View, as follows:

Actually, I don’t think that describes why you don’t have the incoming message view. I need to look around. Or why you can’t see Read or Unread emails. This is a new one for me. Basically, I think that PST is corrupt because I think it started out as an OST not a PST which would explain the (This Computer Only) folders. I think.

Dave, I suppose you could try resetting the view but I doubt it would make a difference, the empty inbox is a weird one.

Open Outlook
Go to the "View Tab
Click on the cog
Reset view.

Remember: after you have done that, go back to "Folder View"
Screenshot 2024-04-10 122803.png

The steps in post #64 are my go to steps every time I reload Windows and Outlook. It never fails me.
Coupled with that backup Add-in I gave you in post #34, my PST is always intact and backed up.

I watched the Youtube video and started poking around the view options. The very first thing I tried was quite telling.

When I clicked "View," then "Change view," the first thing I saw was a button called "IMAP Messages." And when I clicked that, all my messages showed up just as I always expect: (I think this screenshot is safe, though it gives hints at my hobbies, where I shop, and etc.)

This makes me think your assessment from post #86 is correct. This PST is corrupt because it started life as an OST file. That means there's no use in going back and installing Outlook yet again.

Sounds like cleaning up and fixing up this PST would be the way to go. Is there a tutorial on that subject that would be accessible to someone at my skill level? You've been so gracious and generous with your time, and I'd hate for you to have to dedicate another week to this process.

Thanks again for all the help!

Dave, that’s why we’re all here, don’t spend another second worrying about it.

Try do what Denis has linked you to for a repair. Make sure the PST is backed up still?

As for cleaning it up, I can help. But one thing at a time.

Just to confirm:
The Data file is correct? It’s a PST and is the only one in the Data files (Control Panel)
There is only one Profile? (Control Panel)

Thanks, Denis, and Antspants. I'll start work on this about 12 hours from now. At this moment I can barely keep my eyes open, and tomorrow my schedule is full until after lunch.

One quick question, though. I assume there's no point in saving a new PST while things are so messed up. Is that correct?

Thanks again, gents!

I think a backup copy is always worth making before you start any major change to it.
The backup copy will ensure that, if things get any worse, you can ditch the changes and start again.

The initial issue (Thread Title) was to help Dave switch to a POP3 account as apposed to an IMAP. He now knows how to do this. The PST issue is a side issue that has morphed in the thread.

I went through this process. During the execution, it made a text file with 3,467 rows. Here are the last few rows:

I can't really tell any difference. There are still various folders (calendar, contacts, etc) that have one labeled "This computer only" and another without that label. As before, all my contacts from long ago are in the "This computer only" version of the file.

What's my next move?

That's its log file.
I don't systematically retain ScanPST log files but I certainly do not recall seeing one with all those failures listed.
And I have never seen any guide to interpreting the log file.
To me, the point of ScanPST has always been to repair the pst file.

But much of the contents of that pst file should still be copy-able into your new pst file.
I have had to do that for a pst file that still had problems despite running ScanPST.

I've gotten a start with this. I created a brand new PST, and then opened it in Outlook below the PST we've all been banging our heads on.

I've started the process of keeping the folders I need:
1. In the new PST, I created a folder called "Inbox."
2. Inside Inbox of the new PST, I created a folder called "Amazon."
3. I went to Amazon of the old PST, clicked Ctrl A, then Ctrl C.
4. I went down to Amazon of the new PST, the clicked Ctrl V.
5. Voila! Everything in Amazon of the old PST is now also in Amazon of the new PST.

My intention is to do this for every folder I need to keep. (I may not do it for the "Sent Spam" folder LOL.)

The start of the new PST looks like this:

This will be tedious, but I should be able to do it in a couple hours or less. In the end, I'll save the new PST, then delete Office 365 and reinstall it pointed to the new PST.

One thing I'm not quite sure of is how I'll make new emails show up in "Inbox" of the new PST and sent mail in the "Sent Items" folder of the new PST.

Any suggestions?

Not sure that this is the way to proceed but see how you go. I've got some meetings today so I'll check between shouting at people.
