Hello all, me again. I finally have my new laptop all changed over and it's almost perfect except for 1 thing. I have the laptop in a Dell docking station but there's an issue. For years when my computer would fall asleep I could wake it by touching a key on the external keyboard or moving the bluetooth mouse. Neither of these work anymore. I have to undock, open the lid and it comes right on but I shouldn't have to open it every time. As usual I have tried all the things available online (power settings, reg hacks, bat files) but no success. Anyone have any idea how to fix that? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, I can't advise but I'm sure someone will. It would help if you could say exactly what all you did. RE: "these things available online (power settings, reg hacks, bat files) but no success." It's difficult for us to advice if we don't know what you've done.

Modern laptops today use modern standby(S0), not the old S3 sleep we have used for years. There is still activity with the lid closed in modern standby. Therefore, heat is being generated inside the laptop. Some devices (but not all) UEFI bios allow the user to revert back to S3 sleep. Most Dell bios I've seen allow for this if you choose to go that route. To know if S3 sleep is available on your device you can open a command prompt as administrator and type
[powercfg -a]
Post a screeenshot

You might find your answer in the numerous threads here regarding issues with modern standby devices. Most of these reported issues involved sleep/wake. Some involved heat problems. There have been a few reports even to the extreme of these devices catching fire both in a bag and with the lid closed on a desk.

In the upper right corner of the forum page click search, then advanced search. Search for "modern standby". There's a lot of reading there.

Have you got BIOS to wake on USB activity, like a mouse or keyboard? I forget the actual wording in BIOS for most machines, but there is usually a setting in the USB area where you can wake from keyboard or mouse.

Although, being a bluetooth mouse may be giving you some issues with this. Is the keyboard bluetooth as well?

glasskuter thanks for the reply and you are making sense. When I try all those things I never make note of what I've done. I just try, undo, try undo. Maybe I should.

You are right there are no drivers for it and the install package shows up to date. It's a Dell D3100.

no drivers but install package shows up to date? that contradicts itself.. does it show under Device Manager > Display Adapters?

EDIT:
Try this to narrow down if its the dock or not: plug the wireless usb receiver into a port on your pc and not the docking station. then put in sleep mode and see if the mouse will wake it up.

What I meant was that I looked to update the driver but there was no update so I reinstalled the MSI that was up to date. I did find it though I don't know why there are 2? I have just tried your USB suggestion, the mouse opened it up right away but then wouldn't you need a dozen USB ports for peripherals? But it seems like a different kind of sleep. When I put it to sleep right now the keyboard power light is still on but when I can't get it to wake up and walk in the room that light is off.

so its the dock usb power issue. now we can troubleshoot that since we have a path to go down. (irrelevant, but it shows there because it has multiple video outputs (i used to have that same dock, long ago))

d3100 uses displaylink, so lets try the display link newest drivers (24 DEC 2024)

Also look in the Human Interface Devices section.
USB and HID devices can have entries in here set to wake the computer.
