How can I limit my CPU temps?

hi hi,

im just posting this because im a little confused. with my laptop build, i always have to end up using the lowest graphics on any game and have only that game open to be able to actually keep at a temp of 7-80, and I find that sort of annoying as I want to be able to use other apps, such as discord or google, without having to worry about my laptop overheating. is there any way i can do this?

to note, i understand that my GPU, the intel core i9, does get hot easily. and adding on, im on a laptop as well. i usually played plugged in as well. would that be the problem, just playing while plugged in? i do have a cooling pad as well. im just quite unsure what to do here, any help is useful!

Hello @zqchri and welcome to Eleven Forum.

Ok, your "GPU" is the RTX 4060.

To keep your CPU temps down, you first need to make sure you have the BIOS updated to the latest version.

The Intel 13000 series and the 14000 series CPUs, when first released, had their voltages turned up too much.
The latest BIOS should fix that, if not, post back here.

how would one go about updating their bios, and what would it do exactly? any progress loss maybe?

Well, go to that MSI link I gave you (up above), and enter your "full" model number, and you'll be able to "see" what the latest BIOS is and probably be able to download your manual.

They may even have a Utility you can download, that will update the BIOS for you.

I'm not really a laptop person, but there are tons of laptop people on Eleven Forum.

I don't know what the ending numbers are, on your laptop's model number.
With only MSI Raider GE68HX 13VF... I can only get to this page on the MSI website...

The last five letters/numbers of the laptop model number... should be on the bottom of your laptop.

Short version... With all the weird security things Microsoft is doing, you need to keep your BIOS and your chipset drivers, up-to-date.

Most laptops have a Utility (App), that will help you update the drivers and the BIOS.

According to Intel it was only 65W TDP SKU and higher that were affected. This is a 55W TDP CPU.

You don't need to upgrade your BIOS, it won't change your heat issue.
Your laptop will be charging when plugged in and this can generate quite a bit of heat. Try it with and without it plugged in and compare the various temperatures.

it was the 062US i believe - and my current bios versions match up, but the dates dont!!

It definately goes down a LOT when not plugged in, but it barely lasts

Maybe if you used a charger eith less amperage it will help.

The version numbers in the photo is your current and the last, they are not the same, so proceed with the upgrade. Also I would replace the laptop pad with one with larger fans and better heat dissipation. Have you considered to replace the thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink with fresh and better quality one? I know this is rather tricky to do yourself, but you could ask a professional service. Most PC shops also provide service, most of them to other computers, not only those bought from them.

First, update the BIOS by using the M-FLASH method. Also grab the Intel Management Engine Firmware Update Tool from this same webpage.

Still on this same webpage, you can go to the Drivers section and also grab the Intel Thunderbolt driver from there so that you don't have to do it later. (As for the Utility section, just grab all the utilities that you think you might need from it or maybe consider to do it later.)

Next, consider to undervolt your CPU. This video is about the Raider GE78HX (not the GE68HX-13VF), but the method to unlock undervolting on the CPU will still likely be the same.

I would first upgrade BIOS, try a better laptop pad and replace thermal paste before undervolting the CPU and compromise performance.

What are you talking about? The whole idea of undervolting a laptop that has an Intel 13th gen HX series CPU is to boost performance. That plus the fact that if you immediately do the repaste, then you'll never know how much was gained (or lost...) from doing the repaste.

There is nothing wrong with such a Laptop running at 70°C to 80°C, during a game. The CPU is rated up to 100°C and limits itself automatically, same for the GPUs.
Running Discord or Chrome Browser won't add to that much.

Go to the Advanced graphics settings in any Game and adjust individual graphics effects rather than use the blunted overall graphics settings.

MSI must also have an App already installed that will change Thermal Modes(power consumption) and GPU Working Modes. MSI may use different words for a similar thing. MSI Centre?

Obviously power consumption will be higher when plugged in, so will performance. On battery obviously lower power consumption at the expense of lower performance, and to lengthen usage time on one battery charge.

Go to the MSI Centre to update the BIOS, you already seem to have the latest version, unknowingly you may have updated the BIOS.

You will probably need the Intel ME FW Update tool, but check very carefully reading the notes.

My Laptop with very similar hardware 12th Gen and after 6 BIOS updates, one VBIOS update, absolutely nothing changed.

i meant the versions seemed to line up w the most updated one on the site! and i really only got the laptop ~ 8 months ago, so would repasting be needed? the pad ill def look into

what would the m flash method be? and what wouyld the other updates like the IMEF and the other utilities do? sorry, really new to pc stufff

and i tried looking into undervolting one time but didnt know how to do it, ill def look into it. what would it do?
