Solved How I managed to un-group the view in the Save dialog.

Hello,

I see that many people complain about this, and I myself struggled with it.
For reasons yet unknown in my case also the WinSetView tool by @LesFerch wasn't working, so I just tried out what else I could do, and it's actually pretty easy.

I suppose that the Save dialog opens for everybody by default in the Downloads folder.
Anyway whatever folders it will be, you just have to right-click on an empty space, click on "group", and select "(none)":

Et voilà:

If instead of this context menu you get the long one with "select", "open" etc, try finding the space between two folders/files, or double click the window to make it big and you should have plenty clickable empty space.
It's so simple that I'm almost ashamed that I struggled with it for so long.

You might be wondering why the system doesn't remember in the Save dialog the sorting/grouping setting that you chose for Downloads in File Explorer.
The fact is that these kind of folders (downloads, documents, pictures, videos, music) can be accessed from several places (Quick Access / Home, User Folder, This PC, and -apart for Downloads- also Libraries).
And apparently, the System stores the view settings for these folders separately for each of their points of access.
So you need to change the "sort by" and "group by" to your liking in each of these routes.

Here I prepared for your optical convenience 4 screenshots.
I've set the sorting/grouping in the Download folder differently for each route and as you can see the System remembers the setting for the 4 routes like it was 4 different Downloads folders:

And then in the Save dialog you have other three separate routes to the same Downloads folder: from Home, from User Folder, and from This PC.
All of them remembering your grouping/sorting setting.
So, 7 routes in total. Crazy.

There are several tools to tweak File Explorer to one's liking but for some reason it seems that the Download folder escapes their reach more often than not.
These seven routes might be the reason.

I hope this will help someone.
Cheers

I simply apply View/Sort/Group settings to all folder types, (and subfolders)...

... and then the Match view settings for each, (generic folders work the same as General items)...

Takes about 5 minutes after a New Build.

The only exceptions to the rule are the Recycle Bin, This PC and Control Panel.

Hmmm, so, you set the download folder as if it was a documents folder?
Or why is Documents selected in your screenshot?

I don't understand that.
What Match? Where?

@Edwin The "Customize this folder" option is not applicable to the Downloads folder. Even though it's not grayed out and says "General items", the folder type will always actually be type "Downloads".

The "Apply to Folders" button will, however, apply the current folder's view to other folders of the same type.

Note that "Apply to Folders" will NOT update file open/save dialog views for folders that were previously opened via a file open/save dialog, but the dialog views, for folders that were not previously opened via a file dialog, will inherit the current current view as set via "Apply to folders". That's why it's working for you for a new user (i.e. new build).

It's all confusing enough that I prefer to tell people "just run WinSetView and it will take care of all scenarios". What's still a mystery is why it didn't seem to work for @AlterNate37. There's some important piece of information missing there. Thousands (probably tens of thousands) of users have successfully removed grouping everywhere with WinSetView and I have no other reports of it not working (other than the odd app a user left running that caused a file dialog not to inherit the new view - resolved by closing the app and running WinSetView again).

P.S. Note that the Downloads folder behaves differently again when the OS is Windows 10 (i.e. not just the Windows 10 Explorer being used in Windows 11). In that case, subfolders of Downloads are like any folders (i.e. folder type is determined by contents) and can be set to any type you want.
