OS
Win 11
I am building new rig.
I do not want to retire my old system until I can confirm the new one is working the way I want it.
Using my old/current computer, I want to copy the whole drive to a my new SSD with USB/SSD-m.2 adapter.
But I have a couple questions. Disk Manager, and Acronis DiskDirector 12.5 both show my OS drive has 4 partitions. My weekly backup program, Paragon backup & recovery 17 CE reports there are 5 partitions. See screen shot with all three screens.
The extra partition is a small, but filled 16mb one.
Why is there a difference between the programs?

Next what free software can I use in win 11 to copy the complete OS boot drive to a new SSD that is simple to use?
Thanks

Windows disk management does not display hidden partitions.

Windows disk management reports drive numbers starting with 0.

Third party software may:

a) display hidden partitions

b) report drive numbers starting with 1

Please run: disk partition information > post a share link

The Windows disk drive has an extra partition (two recovery partitions).

The 460 MB partition is very likely an orphaned partition and after confirmation can be deleted.

Don't just copy the old drive to a new one. If you do the new drive will not be bootable. You need to clone the whole old drive to a new one. Don't worry about partitions because Acronis will take care of that for you. Just make sure the new drive is as large or larger than the old one. If the new drive is larger than the old one Acronis will automatically resize the C: partition so that the whole drive is used.

I just did that with two computers after I replaced the motherboards on each one. In my case I just replaced the motherboards and kept the original drives. For each computer beforehand in case there were any problems I did disk backups with Acronis True Image to an external drive in case something went wrong with the change.

Note I have Acronis True Image 2024.

BTW, I also use Acronis to back up my phone. It was a lifesaver because after my phone was stolen I was able to restore all my phones data to my new phone.

I'm not the partition guru here, but am I looking a multiple drives, or multiple partitions on one large drive? Never mind, he answered my question with the last post.

Neither recovery partition is enabled.

Recovery is enabled on the Windows partition.

Third party imaging software may have free and pay versions.

Macrium has a feature to restore only the primary data partition.

Please check the features available on Paragon.

A clean install of Windows 11 can be performed on the new or larger drive.

The new drive then has the 4 default partitions with the default architecture.

With the Macrium feature the primary data partition, C: , can then be restored onto the new drive.

Personally i use DISM++ to capture the running OS then copy the image.esd to a Media Creation tool created USB stick then use that to re-install on a blank drive, that way all my software is present, configured and licensed.

Nubish that I am, could you explain DISM++ copy procedure?
I installed it, but do not see how to do what you kindly suggest.
I get the idea, but not sure how to implement .

I have exactly the same question as Klundt1: can you explain the DISM++ copy procedure please?
