I accidentally deleted the wrong Macrium Reflect image file (.mrimg) from a folder on an external HDD.
I store all the image files in one folder on the HDD, which also has other files in other folders.

I have not written to the HDD since the image was deleted, the HDD has been disconnected.
Can members advise what program would be best to use for this particular problem?

I don't want to restore the image once it is recovered, I want to mount it to copy my Photos folder, which somehow got lost when I upgraded from Win 10 to 11.
The WINDOWS.OLD folder has gone, so no joy there. I upgraded two weeks ago and just discovered today that the Photos folder was gone. The deleted image was of my Windows 10.

The lesson now learnt, is to have a copy of photos, videos & documents folders in a second backup location, independent of any image.

Thank you

Expect the recovery to fail.

Create a new image immediately.

Yes, don´t mix images and other files in the same partition.

@FreeBooter

In the TestDisk PDF, at 8.2.4 Partition table type selection, I choose the only one shown/analyse/quick search.
After the search, there was no option shown to "Select Advanced".

I will try other recovery programs.
Thanks for your input.

I am currently running Recuva in a deep scan which finishes in 3 hours.
If there is no success with that, I will watch your video and try to recover the image file.
The extension of the Image file is .mrimg, am I able to search just for that extension?
It's about 400 GB in size.

@theoldfarter.

I remember you.

The Macrium image file is too large for the Recycle Bin. When you deleted it did you not see a popup telling you"its too large for the bin, Do you want to delete it permanently?" And if you have clicked on yes, that is the end. Gone with the wind.

And you have not used TestDisk properly. Don't worry. Even if you had used it properly the [undelete] wouldn't get it. I ran the experiment on my Trial disk. It did not find the deleted Macrium image. Worse and to my surprise, it coudn't even find a small deleted MP3 file. I am wondering whether it is Windows 11 magic.

I am wondering whether any other Data revovery program would find a permanently deleted file. Anyway no harm. Try whatever you can. Good luck.

I remember you also jumanji.
It has been a while since September 2018 when you helped me immensely.
I still have Active@ File Recovery and may end up using it again.
Meanwhile, I am enjoying trying out new programs.

What I am so annoyed about is, that even though I had upgraded to Windows 11 through the path of keeping files and settings, the upgrade deleted my Photos folder. Thirty years of photos are gone. Normally, backing up with Macrium protects against loss. That is unless this Old Fart has a senior moment and deletes the only backup. I never thought to check if anything was missing after the upgrade. Luckily, thirty years of family videos were on another internal HDD. If I can recover the image, I will maintain a second backup of the photos & videos.

You can imagine the grief I am getting from my wife about my actions :(

A word of advice regarding backups. Always keep more than one image and store the images on separate drives. Stuff happens. I've learned to cover my backside from every direction. If something weird and unexpected is going to happen to someone, it will always pick me. And I do mess up myself so I've learned to be prepared for anything.

Only yesterday i recovered a file with recuva that had been deleted bypassing the recycle bin. Didnt need deep scan.

I used an older version of recuva the newer one is huge.

edit:
I just checked, though i have a copy of 1.53.0.1087 it was in fact the slightly more recent recuva64 1.53.0.2096 I used which is under 8mb.
It is handy to use the wizard to scan a particular folder ( if you know what folder the deleted file was in )
