How To Recover An Accidently Deleted Macrium Image?

I am currently running Recuva in a deep scan which finishes in 3 hours.
If there is no success with that, I will watch your video and try to recover the image file.
The extension of the Image file is .mrimg, am I able to search just for that extension?
It's about 400 GB in size.
Yes you can recover file by name and extension.

Personally, I put each image in their individual folder with date and description if any. There's only one image in each folder. Current images are in my data drive and some older ones are on external drives. I don't rename the images, I just make new destination folder every time I create a new one.

I have a folder named "1. Macrium Reflect Back Ups" on an external HDD.
Inside that, I put one image in individual folders, with the date.

Macrium Backup C_18_12_2024
Macrium Backup D_18_12_2024

I also make & name a new folder each time I backup.
After the backup, I delete the previous folder.

Active@FileRecovey finishes in a couple of hours.
If that does not find the image I am after, I will try Windows File Recovery.

The image I am looking for has not been found.
A thought struck me about a Macrium Reflect setting.
Macrium has "Macrium Image Guardian Setting" on by default.
I turned it completely off and did a quick scan with Active@FileRecovery, which showed more older image files than before.
It's still not the one I am after. It shows older image files than the last one I deleted.
Unfortunately, those are not from the drive I am after.

Seeing that disabling "Macrium Image Guardian Setting" allowed more image files to be found, I am going to redo my previous deep scan efforts.
Free time is one thing I have a lot of.

I have not installed any image nor updated, since I deleted the previous backup image that I am trying to find.
Nothing has been written to the external HDD after the image was deleted.

Even though I was not using Macrium over the past few days, it must actively monitor .mrimg files.
As to how it does that, I have no idea.

How many images do you keep? I always keep the original clean image and at least 2 of the latest ones. But my images are small because my data are on separate drive. My images are purely OS and installed apps. It's faster to create and restore images that way.

I have 3 SSD's in my laptop. C:\ 1TB. D:\ 1TB. E:\ 500GB. I have Documents & Videos on D:\ and had Photos on C:\ because D:\got too full to hold both Photos & Video, etc. (E:\ is used for something else). On a weekly basis, I backup C:\ & D:\ to an external HDD. Once they are backed up, I delete the previous backup images. Too late now but I have just ordered a 2TB SSD to replace the D:\ so I can store all important stuff off the C:\. I don't do incremental, etc, backups with Macrium, I just do full backups overnight. I find that easier for me.
Learning from my mistake, I will keep a second copy of the D:\ & C:\ backups on a second external HDD.

I used DiskDrill
It found the file I was after but it reports as 0 bytes in size.
The program also found an older .mrimg from July, that shows 261GB in size.
It is reported that the success of recovery of that file is low.
I will attempt to recover it and if not successful, I will do a deep scan with the program.
The 2TB SSD has arrived so will pause my recovery attempts for a while while I clone the 1TB to the 2TB.
Thanks for all the help so far, I appreciate it.

Starting from SevenForums I have been helping many forum members recover data from hard disks that had turned RAW for one reason or the other, mostly using TestDisk but never was there a request to recover a single file as in this case. So when FreeBooter recommended using TestDisk [Undelete], I was very happy. However the OP theOldfarter farted out loud that he could not recover the file, I was surprised. Was it a user error or a fact? Decided to investigate it myself and here is the process.

1. In most cases, I try to simulate ( whereever possible) the OP's hard disk condition on my Trial HDD and give instructions as I weed through the recovery process. In preparation I run HDD LLF LowLevelFormatTool ( that writes zeroes to all sectors) thus wiping out any and all old Data in the disk and start with a clean slate.. Here also I did it, created two volumes Trial1 and Trial2, formatted and then copied one. *.mrimg file and one Michael Jacson's "Dangerous"
MP3 file to both volumes.

A 28-12-2024 16-27-42.webp

2. TestDisk under test: TestDisk run as administrator
Screen 1: [No Log] > Enter
Screen 2: Select/Highlight the disk to recover > Enter
Screen 3: Select/Highlight the Partition Type > Enter
Screen 4: Select/Highlight [Advanced]- Filesystem Utils <Enter
Screen 5: Landed. Selected/Highlighted Trial1 volume. [Undelete] exeuted by pressing Enter. This is just to confirm no old remnant deleted files exist

B28-12-2024 17-12-21.webp

No old remnant deleted files found.

C28-12-2024 17-25-36.webp

(Pressed the 'Q' on the keyboard to go to the previous page , selected/Highlighted Trial2 Volume and [Undelete] executed. The same result: No remnant deleted old files found) Pressed 'Q' to quit Test Disk. Confirms that no old remnant deleted files from the previous experiment exists. (Oh! I had run tons of experimental trial runs on my Trial HDD to guide the forum members. That is why I do a complete cleanup by running the low level format before starting a new trial) TestDisk will be run again after Shift+ Delete to permanently delete the existing mrimg file and the mp3 file.D28-12-2024 19-23-28.webp
And Yes, I now deleted the two files on the anvil and struck the hammer on them. And they are gone. The recovery process in Triali drive starts..

3; Recovery by TestDisk:
TestDisk run as administrator
Screen 1: [No Log] > Enter
Screen 2: Select/Highlight the disk to recover > Enter
Screen 3: Select/Highlight the Partition Type > Enter
Screen 4: Select/Highlight [Advanced]- Filesystem Utils > Enter
Screen 5: Landed. Selected/Highlighted Trial1 volume [Undelete] exeuted by pressing Enter

E28-12-2024 19-29-19.webp

Crash landing!!!!! Only Michael Jackson mp3 can be recovered . No *,mrimage in sight.

F28-12-2024 19-33-22.webp

I learnt everything Data Recovery by reading user experiences and my own experiments. after becoming a member of Seven Forums This is yet another lesson learnt: TestDisk cannot recover deleted files with proprietary file formats.

Wow, such a well-documented attempt to help me. Thank you very much.

I also was on Seven Forums. I see that have been a member since: "Join Date29 Aug 2010".

Disk Drill found a ".mrimg from July, that shows 261GB in size."
Once I try to recover it, I will update this thread with the result.

Is TestDisk the only program you use for file recovery?

I am not a Data Recovery professional. :-). I have obtained some proficiency in using TestDisk. It is a sort of Swiss Army knife that can do almost all and that too for free ( but has a steep learning curve. TestDisk is highly interactive and one may have to change course according to the information it presents on the screen. Normal users will find it hard to decipher and navigate and will require guidance.). In most commercial programs it is only "free to try" with limited features. You have to buy a license to copy the files. (Example; Disk Drill free will allow you to copy only 500MB of files.) For one-time use most users may not like to spend money on it and ask for a free utility.)

In certain specific cases like corrupt MFT, TestDisk will not be able to repair and recover the files . In those cases the author of TestDisk himself recommends using a commercial software - GetDataBack, Active@ File Recovery recommended.. We had just a handful in that category..

I will also be testing Recuva and and DiskDrill in due course to check their ability to retrieve files with proprietary file formats.

@jumanji
I will not write anything to the drive that I am trying to recover from. I am using a different drive now for backups.
I will keep an eye on this thread for your results, once you have completed your tasks.

I think you have highlighted the problem I am facing, namely "proprietary" file formats.
I will search the Internet to see if I can find any instances of someone recovering a .mrimg file.

I already posted I did it with recuva.

If recuva cant find yours it is probably because of something more destructive than a simple delete.

Just did it again and took some pics

I did what I always do with the folder containing the old image: right-click it and choose delete.
I get told it is too big for the Recycle bin & choose to delete it.

@SIW2

I ran the latest version of Recuva v1.54.120(64bit) on the same I: Trial1 volume on which I had shift deleted the *.mrimg file and Dangerous .mp3 files yesterday.. As with TestDisk only Dangerous.mp3 file was found. No sign of the*.mrimg file. Pictures below.

What is cooking?

Both TestDisk and Recuva run on my Dell Inspiron 3280 Windows 11 Home Version 24H2 Build 26100.2605
