I have no idea if the peoples will put up with it, but paid for Windows as a Service is what Microsoft wants.
That's pretty obvious.
We're being "trained".
Everything tied to a Microsoft account.
Problems on top of problems (designed that way), when we try to do things ourselves.
Microsoft repeatedly breaking tweaking tools.
A plethora of paid "services" like... Office 365, Copilot, Azure... etc., etc., etc.

If they CAN pull it off... they WILL ^^

I have learnt that I have to put up with it, unless I pay for free Outlook, I will receive no email! So I paid the ransom.

I had zero emails in inbox, trash, spam and Outlook was like: Sorry no space available, you can not receive any emails!
Onedrive was 50% free, but because I was using a free account, Outlook did not allow any emails, so I had no choice.

Yes, I agree that they are "thinking" about it but, do you realize how many subscribers they would loose
not to mention the money. There are other OSs out there and if this comes to pass, I believe that you
would most likely see other developers join force or band together to gain an advantage over MS in
any way they can. The money they would loose alone would be an incentive to others increase their
interest in this.

They aren't trying to convince US. They are trying to convince the corporate world, their cash cow.
If it becomes "easier" for the corporate world to pay for Windows as a Service,
Microsoft will be laughing all the way to the bank. ^^

I don't understand what you're saying here. You say you have to pay for Outlook?
I have both Live .com and Hotmail .com and I don't see them asking me to pay for any of them.
Please explain as I am bewildered here or am I being taken advantage of .

Yes, I've heard this as well over the years. Did try Mint at one time and if it wasn't for limited game
support, I would probably be on it still. there are a few distros that are not that complicated and
could be fun to play with.

Once you connect your MS account with OneDrive and outlook, all hell breaks loose.
I moved all my bills and banks to outlook and then this happened, so I had no choice.
I have not received any emails for a week till I paid the ransom for MS365 and that is that.

Appearantly I was not the only one - Redirecting - I am not taking any chances and I rather pay.

Oh I like Linux, don't get me wrong. I have several retired Windows machines that run a desktop Linux just fine. I was just saying that I've been hearing since the 90s that "this year is the year of Linux on the desktop." Spoiler alert... it hasn't happened.

Aren't they already doing that ?
Those company licenses are Not cheap and Windows 10 is coming to EOL soon.
They will have to either pay for the trouble of upgrading or paying for the ESU
(extended service) . Plus , how would PC manufacturers receive this news knowing
that allot of their base will simply vanish. I don't see this happening any time soon.

This is horrible. There are enough email clients out there that one would think of changing too?
I know the trouble of having to change email addresses , I've had to do it too but, paying MS
for what seems like gouging is really unrealistic to me .

@Flashorn For what it's worth, I have a fully compliant machine with DO off, and never download preview updates. My update routine is similar to Ghot's except instead of doing an SFC after the update I do it before. (I want to know I'm clean going into the update and nothing exists that would cause it to fail) I make a fresh image, disable MWB, and keep my fingers crossed. (MWB caused an update to fail way back). That one failure is all the WU fails I've had since the birth of 11.

My calendar reminds me to do this the Monday night before update Tuesday .
Maybe it's luck I've had no other failures or maybe my routine makes a difference. It could be all for nothing. Who the h3ll knows. I remember it's windows update I'm dealing with so I take no chances.

OK so, here is my dilemma.
I have DO off in Settings but, when I have DO disabled in Services. I can't download any updates.

Services for DO will not disable unless you do it from the REG.

Now, if I go to the registry and switch the Hex to 4 instead of 3 (means ON).

I will then get the opportunity to have the DO disabled.

I get this:

As you can see, there is no activity from either upload or download from the Internet as DO is turned off
in Settings but, I cannot install updates if the service for DO is disabled.
In my mind , this means that they MS, are still using DO to facilitate the downloads of updates.
What would be the difference between turning off DO in Settings and disabling the service?

The toggle in Settings affects whether Windows Update content can be sent to PCs on your network or the internet. That doesn't mean WU doesn't use the DO service for something. There's probably a good reason you can't disable it in the services MMC.

Leave the service with the start mode set to 3 (Manual). Flip the toggle off in Settings.

If you're that concerned about transmitting or receiving WU content to/from other PCs, change the DO mode to 99.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeliveryOptimization, value named DODownloadMode, type REG_DWORD, value 99 (decimal).
