Solved Installed but my wifi not recognised

Ok I've just installed Windows 11 on a 5th generation HP laptop, which has been running windows 10 (and originally came with Windows 8). It has had windows 11 on it before and I do remember it not finding my wifi last time, until all updates were done, but last time it used my phone hotspot.

This time it doesn't even recognise the phone hotspot. I've tried downloading (on another laptop) and installing the wifi driver but that made no difference.

It does pick up my neighbour's wifi however! But not mine. I'm wondering if it's because I have a wifi 6 router now? It also doesn't have an ethernet port.

Anyway I'm wondering the best way forwards now. I think if I can get it connected somehow, Windows updates might sort it. It ran on Windows 10 so I don't see why it would have wifi issues on Windows 11. So should I try one of those usb wifi dongles? Or is there something else I could try first?

It may not be ideal but a USB to ethernet adapter is quite cheap. Also, in most laptops it's very easy to replace the wifi card. Another option is to see if your router has options to allow wifi 5 connections.

Or you could connect an older router's Wan port to a LAN port on the newer router. The laptop should connect to the older router. If all ports are in use just buy an ethernet switch.

I use this router-behind-router setup so one wifi signal is virtually in the USA and I can use Pandora. (The streaming service, not the trashy baubles.)

Thank you - all useful options. It just confuses me slightly that the wifi was recognised fine on Windows 10 (just yesterday :-)).

That confuses me too!

But a USB to Ethernet adapter has proved handy when travelling. I have two, one USB-A and one USB-C. It has also helped when the wifi is being difficult!

I have sent for one as I don't like not having an option to connect ethernet. With this same machine last time, once I was connected and updates were done, the wifi started working.

A new wifi card is also an option - would have no idea which one though.

Are you prepared to open the laptop up? For my Acer and my wife's, changing the wifi card took less than five minutes.

Yes it's been opened up before when I last changed the hard drive. We had to drill a screw out of the back last time lol. Which wasn't replaced, so it opens up quite easily now. Apparently Intel no longer make wifi drivers for that card either - it's the 7265 Wireless Lan Driver. The only one I have was from Windows 8 as the later Intel one is now obsolete/unsupported.

I'd still be interested to see what it does if I connect it up with a wifi dongle though. Or whether it works with ethernet or not.

Your wife has a wifi card? I wish i could have pulled the sound card out of mine!

I don't get it.

The laptop's WiFi is clearly working, but it's not recognizing your phone as a hotspot or your router.

I presume that your router supports 2.4GH and 5GHz. Your laptop should at least have the 2.4GHz band.

I don't get it either :-) But I do remember it did the same thing last time I installed Windows 11 (although that was when it first came out) but that time it did recognise my phone hot spot. Once updates were done, the wifi worked. That was over three years ago now though and Windows 11 has moved on. I installed 23H2

Post a picture of your Device Manager screen with the Network Adapters expanded view. Wifi 6 shouldn't matter. It's Wifi 7 that will only work with later versions of Win11.

    I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
Yes wifi from router is on both 2.4 and 5Ghz. The router is actually Starlink but I have an Asus router attached to that to give guest networks and spread the signal a bit.

If you create a wifi network with no security, does the laptop connect? I also have an ASUS router behind a Starlink router. If I can help with settings I will. We know that Windows 11 has stricter network security than earlier versions.

I think it's this laptop - everything else in the house connects fine and there are other machines running Windows 11.

Have you tried troubleshooting it? Like resetting network adapter?

Sorry I missed that post.

The driver showing is a later one than the navufacturer one available for Windows 8 although tried that one as well.
