If the new card needs drivers and therfore does not connect, how will Windows uodate get them?
That's easy. Download the drivers with the old card before replacing it.

I've just realised I have quite a lot of wifi cards
I have a couple of boxes of parts of Eee PC's. I have a 10" one with a Broadcom wifi card and that connects to our wifi even when installing Windows 11. I think the smaller ones are broadcom wifi cards as well. I never did like replacing them though - fiddly cables/aerials.

Yes it's a spare laptop. And I have the updated driver now and can just add it after initial install
It's a poor show though when a 2015 Spectre X360s wifi card can't see my wifi, but a 2012 Eee pc picks up my wifi straight away whatever I install on it! (Including Windows 11). So it's definitely a wifi card thing. The eee pc's have the broadcom wifi cards and I have a bunch of those. But can't see the point in changing it now when I have the right driver to install.
