Is there a way to force win11 to use a paging file?

Windows 11
I have a win11 laptop with 2gb ram with 10gb static size paging file on a SSD, but windows would rather run out of memory than use the paging file.

Is there a tweak or app that will force windows to use a paging file? It's not possible to add more ram.

Using chrome (which seems to work the best), I'll open a youtube channel, scroll down a list of videos, open an interesting video in new window, but when I'm done watching the video chrome forgets where in the list of videos it was scrolled to in the previous window, so I have to scroll down all over again to find where I was. I've turned off all the settings in chrome to minimize memory use.

I've disabled and deleted defender, which helped a lot, but it seems if windows would use the paging file I've allocated for it then I'd have plenty of memory.

It's a cheap laptop (not a chromebook), but all it does is play youtube, VLC, and a trading app.

All ideas welcome. Thanks!

Thanks, but I think I already did that when I set a static page file size of 10 gb. It's as if windows makes no attempt to use the file at all.

Bummer.

Have you noticed any background services (other than Chrome) that might be using excessive recourses. Or anything you might be able to prevent from loading?

The only service that was using enough resources to justify the time to learn how to turn it off was defender. I turned off or uninstalled most apps that came with the pc.

I suppose I could but I'd have to load it on a thumbdrive to get it on this pc or I'd have to log into this site from that pc. But I've been setting a static page file size since win98. Just set the min and max page file size to the same number, then windows can't change the size of it.

That is why I always set a static page file size. There used to be a way to put the static swap file on the fastest part of the disk, but I've forgotten how.

"Memory allocation failures can occur due to latencies that are associated with growing the size of a page file to support additional memory requirements in the system. A potential cause of these failures is when the page file size is configured as "automatic." Automatic page-file size starts with a small page file and grows automatically as needed.

The IO system consists of many components, including file system filters, file systems, volume filters, storage filters, and so on. The specific components on a given system can cause variability in page file growth."

The world has changed!

Since Windows 10, Windows uses memory compression and is far more efficient as it does not need to use pagefiles unless the demand is high.
Setting static pagefile sizes is just no really needed anymore.

Just set windows to automatically set pagefile size.

Maybe you should tell microsoft that, since they recommend doing opposite of what you said. See Zbook's post above.

The problem is demand is high and windows would rather crash than resort to the pagefile.

I turned the "smart" off on my tv and substituted a laptop. Wireless mouse is the remote.

You think having windows make use of a pagefile is too ambitious?

There are apps to make drives out of ram, but are there apps to make ram out of drives?

windows would rather run out of memory than use the paging file.
How did you follow the memory usage and identify the time in which windows ran out of memory?

Were there error messages or codes; something else?

And what problems occurred?

hangs, freezes, crashes; something else?

You think having windows make use of a pagefile is too ambitious?

There are apps to make drives out of ram, but are there apps to make ram out of drives?

My friend, I think running Windows 11 on 2GB of RAM is ambitious.

    …still on a horse.
How did you follow the memory usage and identify the time in which windows ran out of memory?

Were there error messages or codes; something else?

And what problems occurred?

hangs, freezes, crashes; something else?

Well, today I had a chrome window open with a list of videos on a youtube channel, and another chrome window playing a youtube video, then I opened a trading app that has to update before displaying a login screen. There wasn't enough memory to display the login boxes. I had to restart the pc and first get the trading app running and then open the chrome windows.

No bluescreens or anything like that. Just points where it obviously runs out of memory. Firefox would freeze and crash so I can't run any mozilla.
