It's Official. Windows 11 is Vista 2.0

So hey. When I learned my not only year old Intel Celeron Mini PC wouldn't support 11 -- I kinda wanted to kill someone. Just because for one reason or another I always end up REPLACING THESE NMAD THINGS instead of getting to use one for a few years. My latest one was going to be the keeper and then MS took a poo-donkey on my Beelink GK55. Arrrgggggggggggggggh.

So.

If y'all remember me from the 10 Board I was willing to try Zorin 16. After all, that's where keeping this Mini would eventually lead to. About a year ago I (was that guy who) tried Zorin 15, Ubuntu Mate, and one other distro. For a few days I was actually impresed. But then, no matter what I did -- or didn't do -- these OSes would glitch within the week. I had to reinstall each like 3 times before I said NEVER AGAIN.

Well, I just tried Zorin 16 on that Mini and promised myself change nothing. That is, don't allow some Zorin jerk to say, "Well, you never should have -- " done this or that. So I used exclusive to Zorin apps. I only installed one tiny CPU temperature app but otherwise I was using everything in the distro.

It took 22 hours to glitch. I don't mean 22 hours of use. I mean it worked perfectly evening one and was the third time I booted it a day later.

The glitches --

1. In their software store app, there was a weblink to learn more. I clicked it and it opened a Firefox window but committed said window to the left side of the screen, against my wishes.

2. Also, weirdly, it opened a second identical window and stacked them. The top one was glitching, blinking, unsure of if it existed or not.

3. I took Screenshots of this phenomonen. The icons of said snapshots were glitched as well, half accurate... half grey.

As I suspected I'm certain about the cause of all this: Linux updates itself ALL the time. Like almost daily. Like that's a good thing. Think of small cumulative updates DAILY.

So I'm selling that Mini baby.

I think the Beelink GK55 will upgrade to W11 if you update the BIOS firmware. If that is any help to ya.

Yeah the US has some impressively epic places for food, Its like unhealthy food capital of the planet and i absolutely love it xD! If im ever in the US(Which i absolutely will be at sometime in my life) im gonna tour the best food joints wherever i happen to be! Uk sucks for food, Have some decent stuff of course, 5 guys etc.

Hi Iko. Unfortunately Beelink support is terrible. I get that they speak Chinese and such but they kinda do this thing where they tell you how to get started but never tell you how to finish. I use Google translate and double check that it translates well.

So if I go to their site and seek Bios updates, there's nothing listed here --


Please tell me if YOU see a Bios update. Because that page is kinda wonky for me and looks like this --




Now, when I click that Drivers or Firmware TAB, I see this --



What's promising is that date. And that the tab refers to 'firmware'. However, that download seems pretty clearly labeled as 'driver download', right?

So I contacted them for help. They asked me to open the unit and send motherboard serial numbers. (I hope this wasn't suspect but I'm guessing they needed to confirm something. When they approved and said I was all set, they sent me a small file to run. I ran the file and it didn't look like it had done anything.

When the file was first opened it looked like this --



I pressed 'any key to continue' and the window simply went away with no progress bar or confirmation that something had happened. I asked them if that was the way it was supposed to go and they 'vaporized' for some days. Despite me asking if they were going to help or not. Finally they offered me a Chinese link to a Windows 11 Download.

So now I had to guess that the tiny app 'fixed' the PC and will allow me to install Windows 11. However, I sense it's a variant of a hack. Instead of a firmware update. I don't want a 'hack' because it may ruin the machine and not get proper updates. Plus I really didn't know if that Windows download was for real.

My entire contacting them (in the first place) was under the idea of asking customers to chip in and pay them to update the firmware. So I kinda got STUCK there.

For a more stable and pleasant PC experience stick with Windows 10. That's what Microsoft should have done.

I believe most of the money MS is making, is through its cloud services and Office software, not as much by Windows !

At this stage of my life I need mobility and I cannot be tied down to a desktop computer.
I used to assemble my own machines, but there is no way I could have built the two you see below.

Devlin! I have a question for that's been bugging me for DECADES. I visited the lovely London/UK back in 1981. High school trip from America. I'm an Italian American and so you better believe I was paying attention to the food. My friends and I nearly starved to death.

I'm going to ask my question first and post, but in a bit, I'll post some food war stories. My question is that in 1981 we stopped at a strange sort of place in a town. I want to say it was called an ABC Cafeteria. In it was something interesting I've never seen again: a place where homeless, poor, students with no money (Hi!) or anyone with no money could eat affordably. It seemed like a form of a soup kitchen open to all, even if maybe you couldn't pay anything.

I've told people about it for decades but wasn't certain of the name and what the deal was with it and if it still exists.

Can you help?

Between you and me, gotta say: Asus drives me crazy. They should be competing way better with Lenovo but they tend to make a lot of strange decisions that have made me shrug my shoulders and say, okay, maybe next year.

That display in a trackpad thing? It's like widgets in Windows 10 or 11. I barely need it. So it looks great on paper but the real need isn't much. I went all over the web everywhere and said that if Steve Jobs came up with that he'd highlight that feature as a second pretty wallpaper opportunity. So like, for instance, you could have butterflies are your real wallpaper but a few more on the trackpad. Jobs would have shown a parent's children on it... 'So that they're always with you... even when you're busy.'

Now, the one you got and any of their Pro Art or Expert stuff? Fantastic. But what bothers me is the entry level VivoBooks. For YEARS they've been using a cheesy screen. My wife has one. It's 1080p and kinda IPS with slightly weak color and angles. If they simply added a Vivobook Pro with a proper IPS screen -- they'd fly off the shelves. The product simply doesn't exist.

Also, recently, they kinda discarded one of their best features. Newer laptops lack the 'ergolift' hinge, which helps raise the back a little for better typing angles and better ventilation underneath. This is like when Apple ditched MagSafe. Major WTF'rery for all.

But I love your unit. I wish I had a need for it but I don't.

So, Windows 11 Forum has turned into a food forum.

How does yours perform on battery?
ASUS laptops performances tend to suffer badly on battery.

It totally depends on what you're doing. If I'm doing stuff like I'm doing right now, and if I turn the screen brightness down a bit, I can get better than 6 hours. The nice thing about OLED is it maintains color and contrast even when turned down a bit. For a 4K OLED screen plus a 4K IPS sub screen, I think that's surprisingly good. If I'm going to be doing some heave photo/video processing it can be half of that, so for that I'm going to be plugged in. I've had it for 4 months and for my use it fits me perfectly.

I wasn't actually questioning the length of time the battery lasts, but the performance degradation on battery. They tend to slow down quite a bit on battery. Maybe yours is OK. That's why I was asking.

Any slowdown should be reversible in the power plan, not sure specifically but most modern laptop systems are always on battery, with a trickle charge keeping the battery charged. this aids the auto switch to battery power should the mains supply be removed

Now seriously. I have worked on hundreds of laptops over the years, but it's the recent years that I can say that ASUS laptops have suffered from performance lag on battery. I have wasted more time than I EVER should have on trying numerous settings and tweaks to try and get people's ASUS laptops to work better on battery. The ASUS forums have plenty of threads about it. Most say that ASUS deliberately throttle down their laptops on battery to conserve battery life and that it is out of the users' control.

I don't find this performance degradation with some other laptops. GIGABYTE laptops (for example) don't need any tweaking.
