Insider KB5030120 Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25931.1010 (23H2) - Aug. 21

UPDATE 8/25:
New #Windows11 #WindowsInsiders Preview Build 25936.1000 (rs_prerelease) released to Canary channel #WIMVP

 Windows Blogs:

UPDATE 8/21: We are starting to roll out Cumulative Update Build 25931.1010 (KB5030120). This update does not include anything new and is designed to test our servicing pipeline for builds in the Canary Channel.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25931 to the Canary Channel. We are releasing ISOs for this build – they can be downloaded here.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel including documenting only the most significant and highly impactful known issues. Please note that we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

What’s new in Build 25931

New features from the Dev Channel

This build includes new features from the Dev Channel such as Unicode Emoji 15 support, voice access is available to use on more areas in Windows such as the Lock screen, and more.

DC location will no longer use NetBIOS\WINS\mailslot-based discovery by default

We have previously announced the deprecation of both Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) and Remote Mailslots (see this blog post here for information on Remote Mailslots). These deprecations are legacy technologies that are no longer secure in today’s environments. As part of these deprecations, DC location in your environment may be affected mainly because many legacy applications still specify short NetBIOS-style domain names when trying to locate a domain controller (DC). To help ease this transition with these deprecations, we are making two improvements to the DC locator algorithm in Windows.

First, we are blocking by default the use of NetBIOS\WINS\mailslot-based methods for DC-discovery. This behavior can be reverted with the use of a new Group Policy setting (BlockNetBIOSDiscovery). In addition to disabling the new BlockNetBIOSDiscovery policy, reversion to default behavior also requires enabling the EnableMailslots SMB configuration option. (You can query and set the EnableMailslots setting using the Get-SmbClientConfiguration and Set-SmbClientConfiguration PowerShell cmdlets.)

PLEASE NOTE: Reversion should be considered only as a temporary measure while more viable, longer-term solutions are explored.

Second, we have added additional client-side logic to aid in the mapping of short NetBIOS-style domain names to DNS domain names. This improvement consists of two parts:
  1. DC locator will now automatically download additional information about the child domains in trusting forests and use that information as part of the discovery algorithm.
  2. As a last-resort fallback, and to accommodate unforeseen situations, forest administrators can manually configure a set of DNS-to-NetBIOS-domain-name mappings (using the Active Directory Domains and Trusts management snap-in) which are also downloaded and used by DC Locator during discovery.

Screenshot of the DC Locator domain name mappings property page in the Active Directory Domains and Trusts snap-in.

Additional information is available here for DC locator changes.

Changes and Improvements

[General]

  • Insider Preview Build Expiration: The expiration date for Insider Preview builds flighted to the Canary Channel has been updated to 9/15/2024 starting with Build 25931. Please make sure you are updated to the latest build in the Canary Channel.
  • In addition to the Camera app and Cortana, the Photos app, People app, and Remote Desktop (MSTSC) client can be uninstalled.

[File Explorer]

  • Added more fields to show in the Details pane, including image dimensions for pictures, number of pages for .docx, space used and free information for drives, and many others.

[Dynamic Lighting]

  • You can now instantly sync your Windows accent color with the devices around you with the “Match my Windows accent color” toggle under “Effects” for Dynamic Lighting via Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.

[Windows Spotlight]

  • After doing an OS update, in certain cases such as using the default Windows 11 background or a solid color – Windows Spotlight may be enabled for you. If you decide you don’t want Windows Spotlight enabled, you can turn it off and in future OS updates it should not be enabled for you again unless you choose to re-enable the experience.

Fixes for known issues

  • We fixed a major issue where you could no longer connect over SMB to a third-party storage device using guest (no username or password) credentials.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

@fg2001gf11F - I guess I wasn't looking that in-depth and more wanted to confirm I am seeing the issue or not. I'll just not fix it manually since it's a test VM that I am not even using, just want to see if they can really fix it not, hopefully in the near future.

As you are probably aware, Microsoft released a new Beta Insiders Build earlier tdoay and now Windows Update no longer has a Check Updates button so it may be Microsoft's new feature where checking for updates is a thing of the past as they will push updates whenever they feel like it which can mean it will take a infinite amount of time.
I'm working on Dev right now they fixed a couple of bugs.
Beta will be next; I will see what they screwed up.
They are good on adding bugs every time they put out an update. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤬

Hi folks
so far so good --Ist as a base VM with minimal stuff installed. Networking at least is functional (that's always a "guess factor" with Windows).

Installed via WU from a base clean one with minimal apps

Screenshot_20230822_105804.png

Now I'll run an update on a real machine using the iso created via the UUP dump site (the alternative site as uupdump.net was yielding some weird errors).

Cheers

With all this gaming rig I am not a gamer!
Here is another anomaly common to Canary, Dev and Beta. Seems to be related to the problem of the desktop icons turning white and not refreshing. If I click on properties of a desktop shortcut and I Change icon, I select a different icon, then the new icon should show up on the desktop shortcut as soon as I click apply.
That is the normal behavior on Current Public Build and R.P., but on Canary, Dev and Beta the new icon does not show up until I refresh the desktop.
This one is pretty easy to reproduce and seems to be related to the other problem when several desktop icons turn white and do not refresh automatically.
I verified that one of the SDK features File Explorer that is enabled by default in Canary, Dev and Beta is the source of this bug.
If I disable [40729001] (WASDKInFileExplorer), both problems go away and the desktop refreshes automatically when needed. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️
Unfortunately, without than new WASDK other things like the new Spotlight Flyout do not work.
Too many features are interconnected and depend on the new F.E.
It is a can of worms, fixing one bug brings out a new one. 🤣🤣🤐🤐🤷‍♂️

Anyway the 2 bugs are definitely related, I can easily reproduce both. 😎

I did not disable these other 3, which are all related to File Explorer, but did not seem to make a difference.

Here is another anomaly found on Canary It seems to be related to the problem of desktop icons turning white and not updating.

If I click "Refresh" on the desktop the icons become visible again.‼️‼️
Yes, that is the bug, they should refresh automatically, but they don't, and you have to do it manually. 😂😂🤷‍♂️

Same here -- not a problem though. The desktop icons only seem to disappear if something is being installed either manually or via WU.

Remember the canary release is may have all sorts of things not going out for general release in it so while something is being tested it may well cause another defect somewhere else or a regression defect -- something previously fixed that becomes broken again by other updates.

Yeah, in other words it is a mess, and they take forever to fix the bugs. Not just Canary, Dev and Beta are not any better, they have the same bugs.

Not quite. 😎
Many of the experimental features are enabled under the id:42105254 (MTestUx15) which is disabled by default in the current public Build and that is why we don't see the same problems on 22621.2215. 😉
That same ID is enabled in Beta, Dev and Canary with all the features that are enabled under that umbrella and are the source of all these major bugs that we are reporting.
Up to now, seems that MS has been ignoring the FBH reports and unwilling to acknowledge that most of those bugs have been introduced by those new experimental features.
Disabling MTestUx15 gets rid of all those problems, but unfortunately, it also disables a bunch of the experimental features that are enabled under the control of that id. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫🤷‍♂️
Up to MS to isolate which of the features is adding each individual bug that we see with MtestUx15 enabled.

Public Build and R.P. Build 22621.2215:

Canary, Dev and Beta, this was turned on by Enablement KB update:
1692830785419.png

If I enable MTestUx15 on current in R.P. Build 22621.2215, I get the same exact bugs. 😂🤷‍♂️

Looks like it got plenty of upvotes. Everybody with Canary, Dev and Beta is affected by this bug.
The culprit is another feature enabled under the MTestUx15; in this case it is caused by WASDK in File Explorer. 😝🤷‍♂️

Hmm, is this one also a bug as a result of that?

Basically it appears if I try to rename or save files in a certain place on the screen.... Basically it seems if you count from the left to the right side of the screen, it's around the 60% area from left to right that when a file is dragged to that spot or a existing file is renamed at that spot, what windows does is it will move the file to the upper left corner on the first row and have it as either the firs icon or the second icon on the far left row.

I have not seen what you describe, or at least I don't understand exactly what you are doing.
Are you saving files on the desktop and then moving them around?
