Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25997 to the Canary Channel. We are releasing ISOs for this build – they can be downloaded here.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel including documenting only the most significant and highly impactful known issues. Please note that we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Changes and Improvements​

[Windows Share]​

  • If you’re signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID, your Microsoft Teams (work or school) contacts will appear in the Windows share window to quickly share to.

[Settings]​

  • We are beginning to roll out a new option under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Phone Link to disable Phone Link all together in Windows 11. This setting will prevent Phone Link from communicating with your mobile devices.

Fixes for known issues​

  • Fixed an issue causing some Insiders to see the latest builds unexpectedly fail to install with 0x80004005.
  • Fixed an issue causing some Insiders to see an increase in bugchecks after upgrading to the previous build.
  • Fixed an issue where the context menu in File Explorer, as well as the command bar dropdowns, might go transparent sometimes.

Known issues​

  • [REMINDER] Some popular games may not work correctly on the most recent Insider Preview builds in the Canary Channel. Please be sure to submit feedback in Feedback Hub on any issues you see with playing games on these builds.
  • We’re working on a fix for an issue where attempting to reboot into safe mode hangs on the boot logo.
  • Attempting to navigate to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Touchpad on this build will crash Settings.

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel​

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

*Availability of Copilot in Windows: Copilot in Windows in preview is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders in select global markets. The initial markets for the Copilot in Windows preview include North America, United Kingdom and parts of Asia and South America. It is our intention to add additional markets over time.

Rounded corners on Winver (or any other window) requires a display driver that supports it. The one in my Hyper-V doesn't, all my VM's windows have sharp corners. Compare the same windows from my VM and its host machine and you'll see the difference.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Tip for hearing aid users wanting to stream sound from pc to hearing aids but do not have full high energy bluetooth aids (usually only on top of range aids and very power hungry).

Despite all my efforts, I cannot connect my low energy bluetooth hearing aids to Windows Canary despite new feature, and my laptop being low energy bluetooth capable. They connect for about 3 seconds then drops out.

Yet they connect perfectly to my Android Low Energy Bluetooth Smart Phone.

I like streaming direct to my hearing aid as I get great quality, and I can switch off aids microphone to cut out all external noise.

I do have an (expensive) streaming device (Oticon connect clip) which connects to pc and streams to my aids and that works great.

However, not everybody can afford these streaming devices (over £180), so I thought there must be some other way.

There are a variety of ways using a T-coil neckloop at fairly modest costs but are a bit fiddly, but I have came up with a simple free wireless solution (free insamuch if you a;ready have have a Android Low Energy Bluetooth Smart Phone - Iphones work as well).

I connected my Low Energy Bluetooth Smart Phone to my pc using a remote control app (any will do Teamviewer, Anydesk, Splashtop etc). Most remote control apps allow app streaming sound to be played on pc, mobile or bo

So now I could see the pc screen, but could stream the remote app sound to mobile which onwards streams to my hearing aids. There was virtually no detectable audio lag i.e. sound was still synced to audio. The sound was of good quality (better than listening to PC via hearinf aid mics).

Essentially, the mobile phone is doing the job of an expensive streaming device free of charge.

Note: this will only work if you can stream from mobile phone to hearing aids (ASHA capable Android phones or virtually all modern Iphones)

Darn it - Now I know this, I cannot unsee it. I will now have to go through incredibly complicated procedures to pass through my native GPU to Hyper-V so I get rounded corners. Alternative a large brandy or two will have same effect.

I use RoyalTS to manipulate all of the VMs at the same time, I could have sworn it was using native before. I'll have to double check if I changed something - or an update did.

RDP would be ok for sound streaming but problem is when you access pc using RDP, host pc is put into the lick screen and you cannot see anything.

My objective is to watch video fullscreen on pc and stream sound to my aids which is supposed to be possible now but I cannot get it to work.

I can do that with remote control apps but not RDP.

As I said this was more for other users than me as I have a streamer.

I gave up trying to get my hearing aids to work for two reasons. The first one is that my desktop couldn't find them and the second is that as soon as I turn on Bluetooth on the desktop my Bose soundbar connects and the TV loses sound until I use the Bose remote to switch back to the TV. Something my wife isn't too happy about. I don't understand why MS can't make connecting to Bluetooth devices an option that has to be manually selected. If there is an option I haven't found it yet.

I did in one VM - closed Store, rebooted VM and it worked fine for me.

Oops - Didn't see the update until I hit send lol.

Had the same with Phone Link, then I rebooted and the Store kept spinning on check for updates without finding anything.
Ended up doing an update/repair in place with ISO to get things back to normal.
