  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5043178 (released September 26, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Remote Desktop Gateway Service] Fixed: The service stops responding. This occurs when a service uses remote procedure calls (RPC) over HTTP. Because of this, the clients that are using the service disconnect.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB 5046306)- 26100.2032​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update​

All usersWe’re aware of an issue where players on Arm devices are unable to download and play Roblox via the Microsoft Store on Windows.Players on Arm devices can play Roblox by downloading the title directly from www.Roblox.com.
Enterprise usersAfter a fresh install or an In-place upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2, you might face issues with connecting via DirectAccess. You might observe that the DirectAccess connection is not completing and remains in a ‘connecting’ state. Additionally, you can determine if you are affected by this issue by following the below steps:
  • Open Windows PowerShell in administrator prompt. This can be accomplished by opening the Start menu and typing ‘powershell’ and selecting from the results on the right side of the start menu.
  • Type the text ‘netsh interface httpstunnel show interface’ and press enter
  • If your device is experiencing this issue, you’ll observe that the output includes the following text:
    • Last Error Code : 0x57
    • Interface Status : failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server. Waiting to reconnect
You are more likely to face this issue if your device is remotely connecting to a corporate intranet using DirectAccess. Home users of Windows using Home or Pro editions are unlikely to face this issue as DirectAccess is more commonly used in enterprise environments.

Note: Enterprise customers that require DirectAccess are recommended to evaluate Always On VPN (AOVPN) until a fix becomes available.		This issue is addressed in KB5044384.
All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl
  3. Repeat the above steps for C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs.
Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044284 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5044284-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

webview is associated with Rdge Browser ( WebView2 control to display web content in your native apps with Microsoft Edge as the rendering engine)

So far no noticable issue with edge for me as yet

And or system issues apart from windows cleanup cache is still showing 8.63 GB even after trying to remove it again after current update

The Copilot app recently changed so that the conversation history cannot be cleared by the user (me). The Copilot extension for Edge still allows that.

Looks like rapid-Raptor Lake-degradation-syndrome.

Usually if that happens, it's because of something RAM-related, especially "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA" stop code during a Windows update.

(That's what I got with Windows 7, during my socket 1366 RAM woes, with my Asus P6T6 WS Revolution back in 2019. I had to take out the RAM, and for precaution, cleaned the RAM slots with isopropyl alcohol. Now it's working with no BSODs.)

For Raptor Lake, it's most likely a bad CPU.

I posted here at elevenforum about this about a week ago. I still have the issue but it doesn't seem to be causing any system crashes or BSOD's.

Got this update today. Post install ran these as always sfc /scannow Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup Now am getting these despite several tries and reboots..... Image Servicing and Management tool stalls at 70%?Any ideas how to fix it? Hoping to hear from the experts...

Yeah seen that. I am aware of the issue I just don't think it's a problem. Meaning it will get fixed, it has to get fixed, they have to fix it (And the storage sense issue).

I haven't updated past 26100.1742. so I haven't experienced any of the issues.

Sorry for the confusion but the Cascading menus contained in my previous Screenshots & the one posted below should be expanding downward contained inside the window where you can see the menus and not upward as the menu is cut off when full screen as seen in the image below.

I also had to make the window smaller and drag it downward just to capture the menus in the first 2 screenshots.

File explorer "see more" tab always opens upwards 24H2

Hi all I'm on 24H2 with Insider RP build 1882. When I go into File Explorer and click on the 3 dots in the address bar for "see more" the tab always opens upwards. Hence if the window is at the top of the screen, the options are not visible. I have to drag the screen down in order to see them...

That IS a problem.
Mine expand downward like always, even when File Explorer is full screen.

But... since I don't see that problem, it looks to be a problem on YOUR comp, rather than a Microsoft problem?

@Ghot when I first updated this morning the menus worked as they are supposed to for about 6 hours as I am in the middle of a clean install and the menus are getting lots of use. The problem started suddenly just before I posted about it and maybe it will go away in a day or two.

Iv'e seen windows act weird for a day or two after updating before and then suddenly seem to behave normally.

I don't use StartAllBack or Explorer Patcher.... so if you use those... maybe some setting or conflict?

The only weirdness I've noticed, related to drop down menus is this.
On Win 10 it drops UP, but on Win 11 (since 24H2), it drops DOWN, which covers a bit of the Taskbar.

@Ghot as I am in the middle of a clean Install and I am now just installing all of my Paid/Licensed programs I haven't yet installed StartAllBack or Start 11 just using vanilla Windows Explorer.

Also some weirdness that happened yesterday every time I would change the Desktop Icon size to Smaller Icons it would revert to Large Icons after a restart. However after a few more restarts my chosen setting of Small Icons did not revert.

Darn, my network problem is still here.

I could fall back to 23H2 but I will never know when it is OK to go back to 24H2.

A conundrum.

This was reported also 2 weeks ago with 26120.1843.
Same problem with the File explorer 3 dots menu also on Canary 27718.1000. 😵‍💫😝

I was an Insider starting back in Jun 2021.
But as soon as they released a stable build in Oct 2021... I switched to that at light speed. :cool:

I have changed some scary network settings that Microsoft said should be done to work with 24H2.
