  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5043178 (released September 26, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Remote Desktop Gateway Service] Fixed: The service stops responding. This occurs when a service uses remote procedure calls (RPC) over HTTP. Because of this, the clients that are using the service disconnect.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB 5046306)- 26100.2032​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Enterprise usersAfter a fresh install or an In-place upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2, you might face issues with connecting via DirectAccess. You might observe that the DirectAccess connection is not completing and remains in a ‘connecting’ state. Additionally, you can determine if you are affected by this issue by following the below steps:
  • Open Windows PowerShell in administrator prompt. This can be accomplished by opening the Start menu and typing ‘powershell’ and selecting from the results on the right side of the start menu.
  • Type the text ‘netsh interface httpstunnel show interface’ and press enter
  • If your device is experiencing this issue, you’ll observe that the output includes the following text:
    • Last Error Code : 0x57
    • Interface Status : failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server. Waiting to reconnect
You are more likely to face this issue if your device is remotely connecting to a corporate intranet using DirectAccess. Home users of Windows using Home or Pro editions are unlikely to face this issue as DirectAccess is more commonly used in enterprise environments.

Note: Enterprise customers that require DirectAccess are recommended to evaluate Always On VPN (AOVPN) until a fix becomes available.		This issue is addressed in KB5044384.
All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl
  3. Repeat the above steps for C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs.
Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044284 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

First post here and just registered to report this.

Sometime around the of 21H2 age, Windows 11 lost the ability to middle click tray icons. This was a long standing bug which was reported here or here (which is a site from a third party software vendor).

Vanilla 24H2 finally fixed the issue, but the newest KB5044284 broke it again and middle click on tray icons triggered again just a left click event, as happened in the pre-24H2 Windows 11.

I uninstalled KB5044284 and the tray icons are correctly registering middle clicks again, so I can confirm that the regression was introduced by KB5044284.

Using ExplorerPatcher's "Windows 10 (ExplorerPatcher)" taskbar style option, I don't have this problem. Forget sliced bread. ExplorerPatcher can prevent bugs in Windows 11 before Microsoft causes the bugs to occur. :D

Middle-clicking on tray-icons causes them to open for me, with KB5044284 installed. So what is the issue?
Maybe it is because I have not installed Copilot ? Less is more for me.

Yes. There is.

I use something called PowerPro as a launcher (to launch programs with parameters, among myriads of other things). I have set it up so that it places a number of icons on the tray and displays different menus on left, middle and right clicks over such icons. Several other programs use such middle click on tray icons functionality. It is basic functionality.

Windows triggering left click response when I middle-click in tray icons is, as you surely understand, an issue. It is even when not using PowerPro or middle-clicking on tray at all.

The issue is not that Windows 11 ignores clicks on tray icons but that middle click events are registered as left click events, not as middle clicks as they should. This was a long standing bug fixed in vanilla 24H2 that reappeared with yesterday's KB5044284 update.

Thanks. I don't use ExplorerPatcher, but I do use Windhawk. No Windhawk mods fix it, not even disabling every taskbar related mod in Windhawk or Windhawk itself

It installed correctly on my desktop yesterday afternoon but wouldn't install on either of my laptops...kept getting an update failed. Even manual installs failed...on two machines. I'll try again today. Any other tips to get "stubborn" updates to install...automatically or manually? I tried clearing the WU cache.

Working fine here -- no issues so far with this build.

Can't understand all this fuss over "Mouse actions" -- who really cares - I only use scroll wheeel, and LH / RH buttons.

When I see the sorts of things Windows users are writing in the "Switch to Linux thread" which might be sensible reasons for some users and then we get this nonsense over a "Middle Mouse Click" --- Well C'mon -- if you must complain about a Windows build - at least have something more than this 100% trivial issue (if an issue it really is).

I explained clearly why I need middle click on tray icons. But even without such explanations, tray icons SHOULD acknowledge middle clicks and not just triggering left click actions because that is basic functionality involving a button present in any mouse in the world, which is something as standard as it gets.

Most Mouse / keyboard software has actions to enable "custom keys". These releases aren't (yet) RTM stuff so things could change -- but that's Ms for you.

As of 24H2, Microsoft has removed the legacy code that ExplorerPatcher is capable to use to bring back the Windows 10 taskbar on Windows 11. So, to work around this problem, a new taskbar style option was added in ExplorerPatcher some time ago. This new style option is called Windows 10 (ExplorerPatcher). It's a very close match to the old one actually, and looks visually the same.

Currently on 24H2 only a few things are broken in ExplorerPatcher. The Win+X menu won't open if using the above mentioned taskbar style option, but I don't really need this menu anyway. Also if using this taskbar style option, the Weather widget of ExplorerPatcher (not to be confused with the Weather widget of Windows 11) is unavailable for now (hoping Amrsatrio will add it to the new taskbar soon). Another thing I noticed, changing the row height of ExplorerPatcher's Simple Window Switcher feature no longer has any effect.

Using 3840x2160 screen resolution, I can reduce my taskbar height to only 46 pixels, and AFAIK this cannot be done with Windhawk nor StartAllBack nor anything besides ExplorerPatcher. (Icons size sufficiently small on the taskbar = less annoying visual distractions + more icons can be shown on it without them beginning to look like too much clutter.) Adding toolbars on the taskbar works, and "snapping" a toolbar to the area between the Start button and the Pinned area so as to mimic the old Quick Launch works. Running Open-Shell combined with ExplorerPatcher works. The Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar checkbox in the window that appears when you run explorer shell:::{05d7b0f4-2121-4eff-bf6b-ed3f69b894d9} also works, and works without first having to apply the
reg add HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer /v EnableAutoTray /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f registry fix.

Even in its current state, I find that ExplorerPatcher is still the best. (My main reason is its ability to let the taskbar height be reduced to only 46 pixels on a 3840x2160 screen.)

It's not that complicated and doesn't require any special setup. Just tell the tray that I clicked the middle button of my mouse when I click the middle mouse button, don't tell it that I pressed the left button when I clicked the middle button.

Windows 11 did it right just 12 hours ago (as does any other OS in existence). I posted just to point that a bug that was present in 23H2 and 24H2 fixed came back with KB5044284. I think developers call such a thing a "regression".

When I see the sorts of things Windows users are writing in the "Switch to Linux thread" which might be sensible reasons for some users and then we get this nonsense over a "Middle Mouse Click" --- Well C'mon -- if you must complain about a Windows build - at least have something more than this 100% trivial issue (if an issue it really is).

I have error 0x800736b3 when trying to install KB5044284. I don't know how to solve it, the only option is probably to wait for ISO 26100.2033 and update via iso.

i was away since Sept 15th and had my win11 pro shut down so I didn't get any updates. Yesterday I got home and started my computer and took the updates but it was only 23H2 and >NET and Software Removal tool that updated. I left it running all night but have not got the 24H2 appear yet. Also my new laptop which is fully updated because I took it with me on vacation but only is downloading the 23H2. Why is it that my desktop and laptop is not getting the 24H2, anyone know?

MS does not release full version updates like this to everyone at once; instead, they phase them in over time.

Supposedly, Windows Update scans your PC and determines if there are any issues with doing the update and if there are not, then it downloads it -- but my PC has no issues, as far as I know, and it is NOT updating to 24H2, also.

I don't think there is any accurate way to determine WHEN a specific PC is going to get the 24H2 update routinely.
