All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

As for the 190MB (194MB in my case... after 26100.2161), Disk Cleanup leftover... I don't know which it was, but I ran CCleaner's Custom Clean... AND I ran Disk Cleanup a couple more times... and the 194MB dropped down to 3.94MB.

I used the MCT ISO to upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 (26100.1742)... if that even matters.
Then two Windows Updates (when released by MS), to get to 26100.2161

Just checked on UUPDump and this is the "latest" version I see...

Thanks...yep...that was the version I downloaded, created, ISO, and installed. Yours isn't showing it either so I guess it is hit or miss, or something else causing the difference between my two machines.

That is what I plan to do, take the latest ISO and clean install if this months' update does not resolve things on my one supported machine giving me trouble. I still have some video to edit and render so putting off doing this until afterward.

Clean installs are so much work, I only do them if absolutely necessary. Last one was in June 2023.
I do run repair installs if something isn't right, but only then if it's a major problem.

Windows .2161 is working well here, apart from a few issues that don't cause problems for me

Clean installs are that indeed. I have tried a repair install on the troubled computer then tried to install the update but still get the Something went wrong message. I would use the backup I made after installing 24H2 but that probably would end the same way it is now. So I wait on the next WU and if that does not resolve the problem, alas, go with the clean install.

I built an ISO 26100.2161 from uupdump, the download was not too bad, but building the ISO was the longest process I have seen in months.
It took hours to build this ISO below. 😒😝🤷‍♂️

The system I used has an insider Canary Build 27729.1000. Windows Defender Firewall.
Could you please explain how you allow that.

It took me 15 minutes, exactly... to build the Win 11 24H2 Home, ISO.
My SSD is a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB (2.5" SATA)


I started it at 9:01 my time...

I use Bitdefender AV/Firewall. I have set to "block everything", except what I expressly allow.
I even have to expressly allow MCT, if I use that to build an ISO.
I've been using it since Windows 7.

But if I don't allow those things... the ISOs will "never" get built. :-)


I don't know anything about Microsoft Defender. :/

I would assume you just have to "whitelist" those two files?
But... others don't seem to need to do that. 🤷‍♂️


But I could imagine that Microsoft Defender checks "everything" as it's downloaded ??

I use Bitdefender AV/Firewall. I have set to "block everything", except what I expressly allow.
I've been using it since Windows 7.

I don't know anything about Microsoft Defender. :/


I would assume you just have to "whitelist" those two files?
But... others don't seem to need to do that. 🤷‍♂️

Why is 24H2 not in the Latest Public Release Builds?
The latest I can see is Windows 11 Version 23H2 Build 22631.4391.

If you're referring to UUPDump, you need to select 24H2 on the Windows 11 "tab"...
Always use the "tabs" or UUPDump will drive you insane. :-)

When I did the In-Place upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2, I used Microsoft's Media Creation Tool (MCT).
It created the ISO for 26100.1742

Yes, I was referring to UUP Dump. I didn't notice the tab. I haven't used it for awhile.
