Win Update KB5052093 Windows 11 Cumulative Update Preview build 26100.3323 (24H2) - Feb. 25

 Microsoft Support:

February 25, 2025 - KB5052093 (OS Build 26100.3323) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 24H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Highlights

Gradual rollout

These might not be available to all users because they will roll out gradually.
  • [Task Manager] Fixed: It might identify an HDD as an SSD.
  • [Taskbar] New! You can now share files directly from a jump list on the taskbar. Jump lists appear when you right-click an app that has a jump list

  • [Windows Spotlight]
    • New! There’s a quick and easy way to find out more information about a background image. Simply hover over the image or click the “Learn about this picture” icon.
    • New! This update makes Windows Spotlight easier to find. You’ll notice changes to the icon color and background. Also, the icon will show at the lower right area on your desktop.

  • [Lock screen] New! This update makes it easier to learn more about the image on your lock screen when you select the “Like” button.
  • [Narrator] New! There are new functions for Narrator scan mode. Skip past links (n) allows you to go to the text after a link. Use the comma (,) to jump to the start of an item (large table, long list, or another item.) Use the period (.) to jump to the end of an item. This is most helpful when you read long emails, news articles, and wiki pages. Jump to lists (l) allows you to quickly access a list on a web page or in a document. To use these new functions, turn on Narrator first (Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter). Then turn scan mode on by pressing Caps lock + Spacebar. Note that scan mode is on by default on most web pages (like news articles, wiki page, and so on).

  • [Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers] New! Some of you might see a new referral card for a PC Game Pass subscription on the Settings home page. With it, you can invite friends and family to try a PC Game Pass for free. If you qualify, the card only appears when you sign in to your PC using your Microsoft account.

  • [File Explorer]
    • New! You can now snooze or turn off the “Start backup” reminder in the File Explorer address bar. This only applies if you are not already backing up your files and folder. To view this new option, right-click Start backup.

    • Fixed: Improves performance when it loads folders that have a large number of media files.
    • Fixed: When you enter a URL in the address bar, it might not go to the location.
    • Fixed: The address bar overlaps files when you use the F11 full-screen mode.
    • Fixed: The context menu opens slowly when you right-click cloud files.
    • Thumbnails for cloud files display more consistently in search results.
  • [HTML Help Viewer] New! This update adds text scaling support.
  • [Start menu] Fixed: The colors are wrong when you open the account manager flyout menu. This occurs when you use a mixed dark and light custom mode in Settings > Personalization > Colors.
  • [Scanners] Fixed: Apps might not recognize a scanner is available when it is connected.
  • [Audio]
    • Fixed: The volume might increase to 100% when you wake your PC from sleep.
    • Fixed: You might hear a mute and unmute sound several times.
    • Fixed: A USB audio device might stop working after your PC is idle for a short time.
  • [GDI+] Fixed: After you use GDI+ to shrink an image, the colors of the image might be wrong.
  • [Shared PC] Fixed: Using a Guest account to sign in to a PC that is in Shared PC mode might fail. This occurs if you set up DeviceLock password policies.
  • [Mouse] Fixed: In Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch, you can choose a color for the mouse that is not the default. When you chose a color, it reverts to white after the User Account Control (UAC) dialog appears.
  • [Live captions] Fixed: If you disconnect an external monitor, the live captions window might not show.
  • [Drag and Drop] Fixed: The drag and drop functionality wasn't properly moving objects (such as files, emails, or attachments) in certain applications and monitor configurations. This issue occurred on devices using high DPI displays and apps using legacy DPI scaling modes.
  • [Camera]
    • New! Multi-app camera: Allows multiple applications to access the camera stream simultaneously, developed with people with hearing disability to provide video streaming for both a sign language interpreter and the end audience at the same time.

    • New! Basic camera: Enables basic camera functionality for improved debugging, recommended as a last resort when your camera is not functioning correctly.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.

  • [Daylight saving time (DST)] This update supports (DST) changes in Paraguay.
  • [Open Secure Shell (OpenSSH) (known issue)] Fixed: The service fails to start, which stops SSH connections. There is no detailed logging, and you must run the sshd.exe process manually.
  • [Get Help app] Fixed: It fails to open on Windows Server 2025.
  • [Settings] Fixed: Opening Settings shows an error message, "The instruction at 0x00007FFEDEBDC003 referenced memory at 0x0000000000000010. The memory could not be read," because it stopped responding. If impacted, you might also see a similar error message with RuntimeBroker.exe.

    • Fixed: It stops responding.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5052915) - 26100.3312

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates. To learn more about SSUs, see Simplifying on-premises deployment of servicing stack updates.

Known issues in this update

Roblox

Symptom
We’re aware of an issue where players on Arm devices are unable to download and play Roblox from the Microsoft Store on Windows.

Workaround
Players on Arm devices can play Roblox by downloading the title directly from www.Roblox.com.

Citrix

Symptom
Devices that have certain Citrix components installed might be unable to complete installation of the January 2025 Windows security update. This issue was observed on devices with Citrix Session Recording Agent (SRA) version 2411. The 2411 version of this application was released in December 2024.

Affected devices might initially download and apply the January 2025 Windows security update correctly, such as via the Windows Update page in Settings. However, when restarting the device to complete the update installation, an error message with text similar to “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes” appears. The device will then revert to the Windows updates previously present on the device.

This issue likely affects a limited number of organizations as version 2411 of the SRA application is a new version. Home users are not expected to be affected by this issue.

Workaround
Citrix has documented this issue, including a workaround, which can be performed prior to installing the January 2025 Windows security update. For details, see Citrix’s documentation.

Microsoft is working with Citrix to address this issue and will update this documentation once a resolution is available.

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
YesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you will find the link to download and install the update.
YesBefore you install this update
To get the standalone package(s) for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website. This KB contains one or more MSU files that must be installed in order.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together

Download all MSU files for KB5052093 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5052093-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:
Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath "c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5052093-x64.msu"

Updating Windows Installation media
To apply this update to Windows Installation media, see Update Windows installation media with Dynamic Update.

To add this update to a mounted image, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Image:mountdir /Add-Package /PackagePath:Windows11.0-KB5052093-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:
Add-WindowsPackage -Path "c:\offline" -PackagePath "Windows11.0-KB5052093-x64.msu" -PreventPending

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5052093.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU (KB5052915) - version 26100.3312.

I read somewhere on this forum that Bitdefender says that their product is not set up for Insider builds. So it seems their fault.

BD said that too. But I'm not on an Insider build?
Just sent more info to BD, and explained that other AV companies were seeing similar issues.

It's definitely something to do with this latest update from MS.

Granted it might be easier for BD and others... to alter their files, than it would be to get MS to fix the problem.
We'll have to wait and see. LOL

As far as I can tell BD and Windows still function properly.
The error message seems like a "false positive" error message.

Like MS changing something and neglecting to inform anyone.
Which seems to be MS's modus operandi (method of operation), of late. ^^

Same here. No error message when running sfc /scannow.
Same is true for... Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
:-)

I been emailing their tech support for about 2-3 days now.

I guess they finally changed that .dll file.

bdhkm64.dll was updated... 4 March 2025 at 11:51 PM (eastern time, I think)
My post #240, this topic must have happened right before they fixed it.

AND, as I mentioned long ago, near the beginning of this topic (post #55)...
KB5052093 fixed the Disk Cleanup (194MB) problem.

@drminder, Ghot

When was the modified Bitdefender program sent to you (ie, what date did you receive it) ?

I have a Bitdefender Free recent update 27.0.47.241 dated Feb 28 - this does not fix the issue though. Pehaps the freebie version may be left to languish for a time - but since it is freeware, there can be no valid complaints.

So from your comments, it seems the Win11 update KB5052093 changed something in the O/S bowels which Bitdefender has been reluctantly required to accomodate, at least so far for its' paid version.

I told BD repeatedly, that both the free and the paid versions were affected.
Give them another day or so to get around to it.

I also mentioned Avast and Norton so they'd believe that it was KB5052903 that caused the issue, or brought the issue to the surface.

I'm still waiting for my Bitdefender Employee of the Month award.
I'm NOT holding my breath, while I wait. :D

Just checked my "sent" emails.
I re-complained (1.5 days after they had closed my ticket), last night, 20 minutes before they fixed it.

I just sent Bitdefender an email congratulating them, and included this GIF...

@Ghot

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate the sardonicism in the GIF you sent them (John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson are my comedic heroes), even though I'd expect Bitdefender to react to that with a "go slow" :giggle:

John7 are you on Windows 10 as your profile suggests? If so you may want to reach out to Bitdefender this issue only seems to present itself with the install of Windows 11 26100.3323

just for an additional reference my second pc specs under My Computer is on 26100.3194 no issues what so ever. Same with my Laptop and 4th PC HP Omen which are on Windows 10 Home No issues

Hope you get a resolve very soon!

I have Norton 360 Deluxe, and experienced the same as others withe AV problem. Really hosed up my machine and had to roll back to 3194.
What a joke, will never do these preview updates again.

Hello,
When trying to run sfc /scannow I get these 2 messages, but after clicking ok through both the command runs fine. For now the AV(Kaspersky Standard) works fine, but it seems that not just the AV were affected by this new update...MS strikes again.

I still have the error message with Avast Premium Security when running sfc /scannow or Dism.

My Bitdefender did this on the 26120 beta/Dev channel. So I don't think it's just 26100.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

That's an interesting conclusion considering that both of those files come from a third party.

True, but...

A long time ago,
in a galaxy far, far away,
Microsoft didn't code Windows,
with disregard for it's,
breaking of other programs.

In fact, they coded Windows,
to happily run with other programs.
