IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the Western holidays and the upcoming new year, there won’t be a non-security preview release for the month of December 2024. There will be a monthly security release for December 2024. Normal monthly servicing for both security and non-security preview releases will resume in January 2025.

  • [Task Manager]
    • New! The Disconnect and Logoff dialogs now support dark mode and text scaling.
    • New! The Performance section now shows the type for each disk.
  • [IFilters] New! Windows Search runs IFilters in Less Privileged App Containers (LPAC). LPACs are like app containers, but they deny more permissions by default. A process that runs in an LPAC only has access to the resources it needs. The process does not have access to sensitive system components and data. This reduces the potential damage that a compromised process can cause.
  • [DISM] Fixed: The StartComponentCleanup task does not work properly. It stops at 71% and shows error 6842.
  • [PowerShell] Fixed: The Get-WindowsCapability command sometimes fails. Then you have to restart your PC.
  • [Windows Update] Fixed: When you install an update, you might get error 0x800f0905.
  • [JPG files] Fixed: You cannot use an API to find rotation information.

Normal rollout​

  • [HTML Applications (HTA)] Fixed: HTA optional components (OC) are now in ARM64 Windows PE.
  • [Task Manager] Fixed: The Users page might cause Task Manager to stop responding when you use the keyboard.
  • [Graphics Device Interface Plus (GDI+)]
    • Fixed: You cannot get the properties of image files using GDI+.
    • Fixed: Scaling is wrong when you re-encode images in GDI+.
  • [RAW format images] Fixed: They show in the wrong orientation.
  • [Exporting chart objects] Fixed: An app stops responding when it exports chart objects in PDF and XLSX formats.
  • [Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)] Fixed: It stops working and will not start up.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5048295) - 26100.2447​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5046740 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

@Ghot have you tried running Disk cleanup as Administrator from Windows Tools to see if the Cleanup System Files button shows up EDIT: While I am not absolutely sure I think Disk cleanup when ran from Windows Tools cleans up System Files anyway whether you see the button or not.

For me, I don't need to run it as administrator to get the system file cleanup button.

Thanks for all your posts. Been trying to fix this and I have managed to clear the 190mb of Windows Update Cleanup Files.

I went to 'This PC' clicked on my C drive. Went to the 3 dots at the top and did a disk cleanup. It found and cleared 167mb of Windows Update Cleanup Files, not the 380mb as it previously showed before leaving the 190mb.

I went to Storage and then after cleaning Storage Sense (it didn't find any) I went to Temporary Files and it showed the 190mb Windows Update Cleanup Files. But after almost 5 minutes, it cleared the lot (apart from the usual Microsoft Defender files).

I did the usual checks:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
sfc /scannow
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth

It did say it found corruption that was repairable when doing the check. But after rebooting and trying again, No component store corruption found.

Went back to storage and it didn't find any Windows Update Cleanup Files. So, somehow, running the Disk Cleanup from the 3 dots on C Drive seemed to have done the trick.

Did a MC Backup while it is still working.

Again, thank for your input and suggestions. A big thanks to KevTech without his post I would have never thought of doing a Disk Cleanup from there.

EDIT, I spoke too soon. Windows Update didn't install the .NET update. It just found it, rebooted and the 190mb is back :what:

Q: Why did I pick on swapfile.sys?

A: I dunno. It didn't show up on MY C:\ drive till recently. (like maybe 9-12 months ago)

I find it hard to believe in this day and age when hard drive storage is cheap in comparison to the old days that we squabble over a mere couple of hundred meg.

Yes, disk clean up should be perfect “in an ideal world” but?

Yeah, OCD or perfection drives people to do anything to get rid of the annoyance, but playing around with things that should be better left alone is only asking for trouble.

That’s just my opinion, I learnt long ago in DOS, there are some things better left alone for the sake of deleting a small percentage with little gain.

Not everyone uses Hibernation, I don't. The swap file & pagefile are two separate files or so I have been told.

It "must" be just a "reporting" error.

I re-enabled the swapfile, and I still show only 4-6 MB of stuff needing cleaning.
So... the 194MB it showed before I disabled the swapfile, must not have really been there.

I'm gonna restore the last 23H2 backup I have, and check Disk Management.
It only take me about 2-4 mins to restore.

Ok, I went back to October 1st... 26100.1742

Disk Cleanup works as it should. It has the "Cleanup system files" button.


I made a new backup, now I'm using WAU Manager to check for updates.
So far, all it found was KB5043080. Installing now. This is still 26100.1742


Rebooted and checking for updates again.
This time it found KB5046617 which is 26100.2314

Obviously depends on size of C partition - I size my C partition at 250 GB i.e. 250,000 MB, so it takes approx 0.1% of my partition,

If I ever get to the point where 0.1% is critical, then it is time to install a larger drive!

I still have classic Notepad, but Wordpad is gone and I have the three dot problem in File Explorer.

It'll take me about ten minutes to get Wordpad back, and fix the three dot problem.

OK... Wordpad is back and associated with all my .rtf files once again.
And the three dot problem is fixed.

Disk cleanup still works, and still has the "button".

Time to make a new backup... brb.
