Insider KB5052080 Windows 11 Insider Beta and Dev build 26120.3291 (24H2) - Feb. 21

UPDATE 2/28:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3291 (KB5052080) to the Dev and Beta Channels.

The update includes two improvements for Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs:
  • We are previewing the ability to use improved Windows Search to find files saved in the cloud directly from the Windows search box on the taskbar with Windows Insiders with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.
  • This update improves your Recall (Preview) experience and as a result, your previous snapshots were deleted. After installing this build, Recall will continue to save new snapshots normally going forward only if you have the option to save snapshots turned on in Settings.
As a reminder – we’re also offering the same Dev Channel updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel. These updates will be optional at first, so if you are in the Beta Channel today, you can upgrade when you are ready to do so. We plan to make these updates recommended later this year, which means you will eventually get upgraded to 24H2-based updates automatically in the Beta Channel.

If you are an Insider in the Dev Channel, the window is open to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel if you would like. This window will only be open for as long as we’re releasing the same 24H2-based updates (same build numbers) across both the Dev and Beta Channels. When the Dev Channel jumps ahead (higher build numbers), the window to switch will close.

IMPORTANT: This window is closing soon, so we highly encourage you to evaluate which channel you would like to be in during this time in which the window to switch is still open.

New Copilot+ PC experiences

Find photos saved in the cloud via the Windows search box with improved Windows Search

We are excited to extend support for finding photos saved in the cloud with improved Windows Search to the Windows search box on the taskbar. Just use your own words to find photos stored and saved in the cloud by describing what they are about like “European castles” or “summer picnics” in the search box on your taskbar. In addition to photos stored locally on your Copilot+ PC, photos from the cloud will now show up in the search results together. In addition to searching for photos, exact matches for your keywords within the text of your cloud files will show in the search results.

wsb-cloud-semantic-small.webp
Results including dog on beach photos from the cloud in the Windows search box on the taskbar with improved Windows Search.

You can try this experience out today with your personal OneDrive when signed in with your Microsoft account and connected to the internet. If you are signed into OneDrive with a work or school account (Entra ID), you will only see matches for keywords you are searching for within the text of your cloud files in the search results – not photos. Third-party cloud providers will be able to support this experience with their services as well, with documentation coming soon.

We’re excited to introduce a new way to find your cloud content in Windows and will continue improving search results and capabilities over time. The improved Windows Search experiences continue to gradually roll out to Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, including finding photos saved in the cloud, so you may not see these experiences right away. Some of these improved Windows Search experiences are not yet available in all regions, with expanded availability coming over time. Support for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs is coming soon. See here for more details.

NOTE: For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

You can learn more about semantic search on Copilot + PCs here.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Search.

Changes and Improvements gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Recall (Preview)]

Recall is currently available in preview for Windows Insiders on Windows 11, version 24H2 in the Dev and Beta Channels on Copilot+ PCs.

  • [IMPORTANT] As mentioned last week, this update improves your Recall experience and as a result, your previous snapshots were deleted. After installing this build, Recall will continue to save new snapshots normally going forward only if you have the option to save snapshots turned on in Settings.

[Other]

  • As part of the deprecation and removal of Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), this build includes several changes that direct MSDT troubleshooter links in Control Panel to Settings > System > Troubleshoot.

Fixes gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Live captions & real-time translation]

The following fixes are rolling out for live captions and real-time translation on Copilot+ PCs:
  • Fixed the issue where you might see a crash on first launch of live captions.
  • Fixed the issue where if audio is playing or the microphone is enabled, switching languages will crash live captions.

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed a few issues impacting File Explorer reliability for Insiders.
  • Fixed an issue where opening File Explorer from the command line may result in the address bar being empty and not displaying the current path.
  • Fixed an issue where you couldn’t select multiple files in the Recommended section of Home by holding Shift and clicking the files.

[Power & Battery]

[Graphics]

  • Fixed an issue which could cause color profiles to not load correctly after waking your PC from sleep.

[Remote Desktop]

  • Fixed an issue where Remote Desktop wouldn’t use UDP, only TCP.

Known issues

[General]

  • After you do a PC reset under Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26120. This will not prevent you from getting future Dev Channel updates which will resolve this issue.

[Recall]

  • [REMINDER] Make sure you update Microsoft 365 apps to the latest version so you can jump back into specific documents.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • Some Insiders may experience an issue where Recall is unable to automatically save snapshots, and the setting can’t be turned on in Settings. We’re working on a fix for this issue.
  • Recall can be enabled or disabled from “Turn Windows features on or off”. We are caching the Recall binaries on disk while we test add/remove. In a future update we will completely remove the binaries.
  • Some users may see a message to “Make sure Recall is saving snapshots”, while the Settings page for Recall shows saving snapshots is enabled. Reboot your device to resolve this issue.

[Click to Do]

  • [REMINDER] If any of your actions on image entities are no longer appearing, please ensure you have the latest updates for the Photos and Paint app from the Microsoft Store.
  • [REMINDER] The intelligent text actions leverage the power of Microsoft’s secure cloud to improve your text results by ensuring prompts and responses are safe and appropriate. This data is automatically deleted. Local moderation to ensure the safety of prompts and responses will be added in the future, replacing this cloud endpoint.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • Sometimes additional context is given when using more intelligent text actions powered by Phi Silica.

[Improved Windows Search]

  • [REMINDER] For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

[File Explorer]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing File Explorer to be very slow to close for some Insiders when closing using the X button. This may also have an impact on the other title bar buttons.

Snipping Tool (version 11.2501.7.0)

We are rolling out an update for Snipping Tool to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels that introduces trim! With trim, you can adjust the start and end times of your screen recordings to cut out any unnecessary video snippets from your video.

New trim capability for screen recordings in Snipping Tool.
New trim capability for screen recordings in Snipping Tool.

To get started, record a new screen recording with Snipping Tool. Open the recording in the app and select the new Trim button at the top of the window to enter the trim feature. Use the grabbers to move and select new timepoints for the start and end times of your screen recording. Press the Apply or Cancel button to save or discard your changes. You can also re-enter trim to undo or adjust any trimmed portions.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Snipping Tool.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel

  • Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 via an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx). UPDATE: If you are in the Beta Channel, these updates are currently offered to you as an optional upgrade, and you can upgrade when you are ready to do so. We plan to make these updates recommended in the Beta Channel later this year, which means you will eventually get upgraded to 24H2-based updates automatically.
  • Updates delivered to the Dev Channel are in a format that offers a preview of enhancements to servicing technology on Windows 11, version 24H2. To learn more, see Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates | Windows IT Pro Blog.
  • Many features in the Dev Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • For Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • Please note that some accessibility features may not work with features like Recall and Click to Do while in preview with Windows Insiders.
  • Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first.
  • Check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon

I actually missed one comment, and it seemed like there was only 1 ID needed and not 2 or 3 since atleast @stzan got it working with just 1:

but ofcourse in this post in .3281, @stzan also said the other id's don't work:

@fg2001gf11F - Did you ever lose the icons? Maybe there is a difference between losing it and losing it by doing a in-place repair install? The later may have wiped out whatever MS added before similar to what I thought about the .NET 3.5.
You actually need 3 ids to activate the new battery icon.
At first I said the 2 known ids were not working and then you needed the new additional id. Sorry for the confusion I made.

@Almighty,
Which build are you currently running? The whole thing was disabled with 26120.3291 and 26100.3323.
The priority only matters if there are multiple settings for the same Feature ID, then the highest priority will take precedence. I don't know exactly what each number from 0 to 14 mean, the Syntax is shown in vivetool
They have priorities from 0 to 15, and some cannot be changed by the users of vivetool. I know 15 cannot be modified.
As for your specific case, 48822452 should be the only one that needs to be enabled to get the battery icons back. 😉

On my 26120.3360 that feature id was enabled in the ImageDefault. So, a /reset just puts it back to what it was in the ImageDefault.

When I wrote the comment, I was already on 26120.3360 Beta. I actually had the battery with % icon with the Windows Updated 26120.3281 and 26120.3291 but the UUPDump ISO 26120.3291 disabled the battery with % icon. For the Priority and the Type, I did not mean the numbers but the word itself such as safeguard, service, dynic, user, userpolicy, test as the numbers is always 0 disabled and 1 enabled for the basics, not sure about numbers after that. LOL.

I never knew you can have multiple settings for the same feature ID.

Let me see what mines says now as the battery and % did come back with that one ID enabled to add to the existing.
Code:
vivetool /query /id:54237969,48433719,48822452

Compared to your Dev 26120.3360:
1740907130127.webp

for the last 48822452, my Priority is User(8) while yours is ImageDefault (0), what's the difference between User and ImageDefault?

As for Hyper-V, when I was still on 26120.3291 Beta and saw the new Canary build came out, I started Hyper-V Manager but before that happened, it showed something briefly for like 5 seconds and my Hyper-V Manager looks different as that box on the buttom of Automatic Checkpoint used to be on the right hand side.

1740907651050.webp
Even the Checkpoint section had a upgrade version button next to it which is not there now after I upgraded.

and as you can see, my Hyper-V Canary does have the battery % icon:
1740908071916.webp

I do have a question for you, on the machines you have with the battery % icons, are those desktops or laptops because I thought only laptops was supposed to show a battery? My physical machine is a notebook and does have a battery.

The ImageDefault (0) is what option Microsoft is rolling out. The option can be eather enabled or disabled and can be different on each pc. It can be enabled on your pc and disabled on mine. User(8) is when you enforce the option with vivetool. For battery icon which has 3 ids you need to enforce 1 or more options with vivetool.

@Almighty1,
1) The difference in Priority 0 versus 8.
Mine was installed by MS with the last update, they had that ID already enabled in the image that was downloaded.
Yours was enabled by the user with vivetool.

2) If you issue vivetool /query it will list all the ids and you can see if any id has setting with different priorities.
Here is a sample set with 2 priorities, the enable State could be different in the 2 settings.
1740941479170.webp

3) I have no idea about the checkpoint difference. And I don't use HyperV. 🤷‍♂️

4) In Hyperv, please display device manger to see if it shows the batteries device, I guess they can use the one of the Host.
1740938526013.webp

5) Desktops can have batteries if they are connected to a UPS which communicates with the PC via a USB connection.

B.T.W.
You can also use the /Priority: option with the priority of your choices when you enable the feature, just enter it after the ":".
For example /priority:test

These 3 cannot be overwritten.

Here is one has the highest priority, and it is disabled. There is nothing a regular user can do to enable or modify this. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

1) What I meant to ask is, for the words before the (), is the number and word always going to be a matching set. Basically ImageOverride is another way to say Priority 15?

2) How do you actually add/remove the additional priorities or can only MSFT do that?

3) Nevermind about that one, when I compared it, it looks the same as what others have online but I know before the Hyper-V Manager showed up. It was doing some sort of database update or something for 5 seconds or less and the Hyper-V Manager screen went back into a smaller window that did not display everything so maybe it's 26120.3291 had a Hyper-V update and that was the first time I ran Hyper-V after it's been out as I usually don't run Hyper-V unless there is a Canary build update and sometimes for PowerToys updates. I usually update the Canary first before doing the host Beta build update which is why it's 26120.3291 and not 26120.3360 as my system slows down until reboot after running Hyper-V. So let's just say Hyper-V was updated since even I can't show what the screen said before as it was brief and there is no way to reproduce it but starting up THE VM as in Canary is way faster now to the Windows login screen. It used to take 5+ minutes, now it does it in seconds. The upgrade version thing is basically option 2 mentioned in this article:

4)
1740952252822.webp
which is identical to the host running 26120.3360 Beta:
1740952319039.webp

5) Never thought about that one as never had a UPS and never dealt with systems in the last 42 years that had one either, atleast paying attention there were UPSes.

I figured the priroties can be changed but that should only be needed if there were multiple profiles for that feature.

@Almighty1 ,
1) Yes, I think the number in the priority matches the wording.

2) You can add a higher priority, for the ones that are allowed, I showed earlier the 3 that cannot be written to.
1740952347250.webp
4) Looks like HyperV is allowed to deal with the same batteries controlled by the Host. 😂🤷‍♂️
I don't use virtual machines simply because they require an extra license. 😝🤷‍♂️
I have plenty of real machines for testing. 😉

5) I have UPS with batteries on my desktops. Also have 2 laptops that clearly have batteries on their own.

You can change only the priorities that are allowed to be changed by a user.
But you can always add a higher priority if you want precedence, except for 15 which is the highest and cannot be overwritten by the user. 😵‍💫🤣🤷‍♂️

In a way, I am confused why two priorities would exist in the first place because for a feature, wouldn't it only care if it was enabled or disabled since how does it determine which priority would be used since whether you have 1 or 10, the one with the highest will always be used anyways? Unless the profiles is meant because the MSFT assigned profiles cannot be changed and then you wanted your own setting to be used instead of MSFT's.

4) I don't have machines because I still have my stuff packed in boxes and will be doing a whole teardown of the house and rebuilding it so any new machines will be collecting dust for the 1.5-2 years I won't be here. I mean I have a couple of Microsoft Surface Pro x64 machines from probably 2016 or 2017 that is still in the sealed packaging that ships with Windows 10. Not sure if I can even upgrade it to Windows 11 but those are still considered notebooks and not really real machines. My real machine besides the Dell XPS 15 9570 on Windows 24H2 Beta still runs Windows XP 32bit SP3 which is only used for WinFax Pro to send faxes.

5) I didn't get a UPS because I am trying to look for something with decent runtimes if there was a power outage and it's hard to figure out what the VA is needed as CyberPower for example seems to have high VA output compared to the APC but hard to say if they really have longer runtimes and I don't like paying for batteries every 5 years as that can get expensive in the long run. That's why I have notebooks should there be a power outage. LOL.

I think what I am confused about is why would someone want to add a priority instead of just replacing the existing single priority setting or is it more to keep the existing priority there just for reference? I mean even in your screenshot, they are both enabled so the end result would be the same regardless which priority it uses since both of them basically would be enabled for that feature id. I know multiple priorities exist in your example but they have the same result of the state being enabled. as the type(0) is the same.

You can replace the ones that are allowed to be changed, or add one with a higher priority, your choice. 😂🤷‍♂️
0 cannot be changed by the user as I already showed earlier, so you will have to add one if you want to modify the state.
Here is another example showing 3 different ones.
Keep in mind that the priority Service can be modified during a windows update or when MS decides to change it,
using a higher priority like User or Test may prevent that. 😂🤷‍♂️
I also use the option /store:both to make sure it is saved in both stores.

If you are happy with the existing setting in ImageDefault you can just issue vivetool /reset /id:48822452 and it will clear the extra ones and leave only the ImageDefault if it was already there.

I know what you mean, but I mean it seems to be more of something to look at since unless the one assigned by default can't be changed, then you would add one but if it can be, then you can change it to the enable or disable state and as far as the system is concerned, it will always use the one with the highest priority and ignore the rest so you can list 1 or an ∞ amount of priorities, it will still use whatever has the highest priority and ignore the rest. So basically it seems like it doesn't matter for the 3 priorities one can't change, it's only bad if there is 15 assuming 15 is the highest priority since you can't change that enable to disable or disable to enable. 0 and 9 is not a problem since basically 1-8, 10-14 will already be higher than 0 and for 9, 10-14 would do the same thing. It's only 15 that one has to be worried about and for all we know, maybe there is a way to do it in the registry like setting it to 99 or something. LOL

As I said, it is up to you how you want to handle it. 🤣🤣🤣🤷‍♂️
Most users just omit the priority parameter, and it will be set automatically to User which is already higher than Service.
That should be enough to prevent MS from changing it to a different state during their experiments.
The highest priority that can be set with vivetool is Test(14).
Enough on this subject! It should have a separate thread. 😉

As for UPS I have 3 different APC models, one is 1600VA, one is 750VA, and the last one 500VA.
The electric power company here is not very stable here and had to use UPS for better safety. 🤷‍♂️
The bigger one actually failed, and I had it replaced under warranty. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

LOL, it seems like unless MS put in a 15, you will always be able to set it to the opposite so technically, there can be up to 15 priorities set for a feature id except only 12 are really user definable.
Sorry, just didn't understand how it worked and we were on the Vivetool subject and I guess you were the one who brought up the multiple priroties for a feature. I guess only MS will know.
I know 14 is the highest in Vivetool but I meant someone could figure out a way to directly modify the database wherever it may be.

There are many IDs with priority 15, looks like MS sets them at 15 when they want to make sure they are not changed by the users. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

Eggsactly what I meant, basically saying as long as they do not set the specific feature id to 15, you can change the setting to the opposite from enable to disable or disable to enable. Otherwise you don't have a choice.

Well, except for 15, if I add one in higher priority than the ones set by MS, it should be left alone when they do their experiments.
It all depends on what we want to achieve. 😂😂🤷‍♂️
I tried several times changing the ones they set with priority:service, just to find the state changed back after a reboot or after checking for updates.
In the same situations, if I use priority:test, the state is not reverted back. 😉

Interesting.. I'll have to spend some time on reading on ViveTools when I have time. My 24H2 is lagging like crazy ever since 3073 that it's skipping characters even in my posts. Once in while, it will be fast and working like the last 10 seconds. When it's lagging, it's like it's some interrupt conflict or something. 23H2 never had these problems.
