Insider KB5053660 Windows 11 Insider Beta and Dev build 26120.3380 (24H2) - March 10

UPDATE 3/17:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3380 (KB5053660) to the Dev and Beta Channels.

As a reminder – we’re also offering the same Dev Channel updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel. These updates will be optional at first, so if you are in the Beta Channel today, you can upgrade when you are ready to do so. We plan to make these updates recommended later this year, which means you will eventually get upgraded to 24H2-based updates automatically in the Beta Channel.

If you are an Insider in the Dev Channel, the window is open to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel if you would like. This window will only be open for as long as we’re releasing the same 24H2-based updates (same build numbers) across both the Dev and Beta Channels. When the Dev Channel jumps ahead (higher build numbers), the window to switch will close. Please note that switching from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel may result in the loss of some features temporarily.

IMPORTANT: This window is closing soon, so we highly encourage you to evaluate which channel you would like to be in during this time in which the window to switch is still open.

New features gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

Recommended files in File Explorer

Recommended files in File Explorer Home are now available to all Windows Insiders who are signed in with their personal Microsoft account (and local accounts). These files will provide you quick access to relevant files based on your activity in the Recommended section which is displayed as a carousel with thumbnail previews. This includes content such as files you frequently use, have recently downloaded, or added to your File Explorer Gallery. Users with a work/school account (Entra ID) will have additional types of recommendations available with this update. This change is not yet rolling out in the EEA (European Economic Area). Quick access folders will continue to be available in the navigation pane for easy access to pinned folders.

Changes and Improvements gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Live captions]

  • On AMD and Intel®-powered Copilot+ PCs, we’re beginning to roll out the ability to do real-time translation to Chinese (Simplified). Supported languages include Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech Danish, German, Greek English Spanish, English, Estonian, Finnish, France, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovene, and Swedish.

[Start menu]

  • We are trying out a new change where we will recommend a snap group in the Recommended section of the Start menu based on two apps that are most likely to be snapped together. Let us know what you think if you see this!

Example of recommended apps to snap together on the Recommended section of the Start menu.

[Search on the Taskbar]

  • Improved support for web search providers in Windows Search for the EEA, including with increased discoverability.

[Notifications]

  • To ensure you never lose access to your Microsoft account, we are introducing a new toast notification that will prompt you to add a secondary email or recovery phone number to your account. This will only appear if you’re signed in to your PC with your Microsoft account and this information is missing from your profile. Adding these account proofs will help you recover your Microsoft account if you ever forget your password or get locked out for any reason.

[Widgets]

  • In this flight, we’re introducing the ability for web developers to easily utilize their existing web content to build dynamic and interactive widgets that can be added to the widgets surfaces in Windows 11. For more information, click here.

[Input]

  • We are trying out a new experience to improve the discoverability of the emoji and more panel in Windows 11 with the introduction of a new system tray icon on the taskbar. With this new system tray icon, you can easily express yourself by using emojis, GIFs, Kaomoji etc. across all apps and surfaces in Windows in addition to using the WIN + . keyboard shortcut which is also now shown on the emoji and more panel. This new system tray icon for the emoji and more panel shows can be changed by right-clicking on the icon to go to taskbar settings page.

[Settings]

  • We are rolling out “top cards” under Settings > System > About. These top cards provide an easy way to view your PC’s key specifications—processor, RAM, storage, and GPU—helping you understand your PC’s capabilities at a glance. This is designed to simplify decision-making by highlighting potential areas for hardware improvements while giving you a clear snapshot of your PC. Top Cards won’t appear yet on managed commercial PCs. Note this change appears only on specific PC form-factors such as desktops.

Fixes gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[File Explorer]

  • As part of our ongoing commitment to improving File Explorer accessibility, this release includes increased support for the text scaling (via Settings > Text size) across File Open/Save dialogs and Wizard dialogs.

[Windowing]

  • Fixed an issue where the Snap Bar at the top of the screen was unexpectedly showing corners on the side closest to the screen.

[Input]

  • Fixed a high hitting ctfmon.exe crash, which could impact the ability to type.

[Settings]

  • Fixed an underlying issue which could lead to Settings crashing when adding a color profile in Settings > System > Display.
  • Fixed an issue where Settings might crash after using Settings to sign into an MSA.
  • Fixed an issue for Japanese users, where the name displayed at the top of Settings > Accounts showed First Name Last Name instead of Last Name First Name.

[Other]

  • Fixed an issue which could lead to a bugcheck with PDC_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT when resuming from sleep.
  • Fixed an issue with windows.storage.dll in the last few flights, where trying to open files from an app could lead to the app crashing.

Known issues

[General]

  • After you do a PC reset under Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26120. This will not prevent you from getting future Dev Channel updates which will resolve this issue.

[Recall]

  • [REMINDER] Make sure you update Microsoft 365 apps to the latest version so you can jump back into specific documents.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • [ADDED 3/13] After installing this update, you may be notified to turn snapshots back on in Recall via Recall’s system tray icon. If you see this, please file feedback.
  • [NEW] If you are trying out Recall on a PC managed by an IT administrator in your organization (signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID), you will see your Recall snapshots get deletedafter installing this build and then continue to get deleted each time you reboot. As a temporary work around until we fix this issue, you can follow these steps before installing this update to prevent your snapshots from being deleted (you may need to do these steps prior to each reboot as well after installing this update):
    • Type gpedit.msc in the search box on your taskbar to open Group Policy Editor.
    • Navigate down to the following: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows AI.
    • AI-generated content may be incorrect.
    • Set “Allow Recall to be enabled” to Enabled.
    • Set “Turn off saving snapshots for use with Recall” to Disabled.
  • Some Insiders may experience an issue where Recall is unable to automatically save snapshots, and the setting can’t be turned on in Settings. We’re working on a fix for this issue.
  • Recall can be enabled or disabled from “Turn Windows features on or off”. We are caching the Recall binaries on disk while we test add/remove. In a future update we will completely remove the binaries.

[Click to Do]

  • [REMINDER] If any of your actions on image entities are no longer appearing, please ensure you have the latest updates for the Photos and Paint app from the Microsoft Store.
  • [REMINDER] The intelligent text actions leverage the power of Microsoft’s secure cloud to improve your text results by ensuring prompts and responses are safe and appropriate. This data is automatically deleted. Local moderation to ensure the safety of prompts and responses will be added in the future, replacing this cloud endpoint.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • Sometimes additional context is given when using more intelligent text actions powered by Phi Silica.

[Improved Windows Search]

  • [REMINDER] For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

[File Explorer]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing File Explorer to be very slow to close for some Insiders when closing using the X button. This may also have an impact on the other title bar buttons.

[Task Manager]

  • After adding the new CPU Utility column, you may notice that System Idle Process always shows as 0.
  • The CPU graphs in the Performance page are still using the old CPU utility calculations.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel

  • Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel on Windows 11, version 24H2 will receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 via an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx).
  • Updates delivered to the Dev Channel are in a format that offers a preview of enhancements to servicing technology on Windows 11, version 24H2. To learn more, see Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates | Windows IT Pro Blog.
  • Many features in the Dev Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • For Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • Please note that some accessibility features may not work with features like Recall and Click to Do while in preview with Windows Insiders.
  • Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first.
  • Check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon

Just a fair warning to users out there that have mods installed - I've had nothing but issues with this build, I ended up rolling back to 26120.3360. This update doesn't play nice with mods (especially Windhawk AND Start11 [I tried Start11 as a last resort to try to save my desktop environment] )......totally killed my system and mods. Explorer constantly crashed every other second - sent my PC into an endless looping cycle of explorer crashing and restarting.

I can confirm as well, I was using Windhawk for custom clock mods and explorer where lagging (as it was the only mod related to explorer process), I immediately disabled it until further notice, all smooth and fine.

What is purpose in testing insider builds if third party mods are used ? They are released to test changes to system, not 3rd party programs. So it's understandable if they go out of wack.

Of course it is....however, people have PC's that they need to use for school, business, and personal use and not so much a "Guinea Pig" so to speak. Windows 11 is quite stripped down after all these years - still to this day; compared to previous versions of the operating system. There isn't, and never was any kind of ability to customize an individuals PC to their choosing as they could easily do so in previous Windows versions. Windows 10 worked great, as well did Windows 7 - both with the ability to customize to one's needs. We won't mention Windows 8 however - as that was a complete utter failure statistically. Windows 11 however, is today's Windows 8. MS seems to careless about customization, and would rather release "new features" on top of an already broken Operating System rather than fixing the issues prior to releasing new features. Thus, in turn leads to individuals who are forced to upgrade, to maintain as much customization options to fit their needs to their own likings as well as their own ease of use and preferences. Windows 11, quite frankly, is a complete mess, completely broken, and missing even the simplest of features (think taskbar positioning/ resizing/ customization, or better GUI transparency for example [Aero] ) as was Windows 8 completely lacking as well. Windows 11 in my opinion, is a complete joke that is mandated upon PC users. My point? Don't release an operating system with a completely broken foundation, and try to cover it up with releasing "new features" upon "new features" like an average person changes underwear and not bothering to fix the underlying issues (24H2 - I'm looking at you). Fix what is broken first, tailored to what actual users want, then worry about "new features". Instead, what we got, was a complete broken mess that everything was originally broken or taken away that most PC users wanted, then forcefully spoon-feed them with garbage that no one in their right mind would use. For example, a recommended snap program section that they pre-choose for you? Are you kidding? No, people want to be able to have the freedom to move their taskbar around if they so choose. This has been a request for several years now, and instead, they are to busy injecting ads in the start menu or file explorer itself. They are also breaking explorer even more than ever before. I even have Steam games that I can't open because they are too busy adding unpopular "new features" (like ads that target users for making money off of them) that had previously worked very well on Windows 10 or other previous versions. If it's not broken - don't fix it, or at least don't inject code that inserts ads on someone's PC when they just want to use it for email or gaming purposes. But going back to the main issue here, People like us, have no choice but to join the Insiders program because we have hopes that maybe one day the airheads at MS will actually listen to PC users and bring back those features that was taken away from us that many of us are hoping with each new build they will bring back - (which they secretly keep from everyone. No one ever gets a "in a future build we plan on listening to user feed back and will allow more customization options such as....) They simply ignore us, and those features that have been begged to comeback haven't as of yet. So yeah, this is why people who mod their systems to fit their needs and ease of access until MS actually begins to listen to their users who have been using their products in the past without the need for mods. I've been using Windows since Windows 3.1. I myself fully am aware of all the features I used to have and use, and customization features that have been taken away with this version, namely Windows 11. It is complete garbage. Never had I the need to use mods for Windows 7, 10. Yes, I used some for 98, and some for 2000, Windows Me, XP, and Vista. But Windows 11? completely stripped. Completely ignoring PC users who once had these features and now can't do a licking thing to their PC to modify it for simplistic purposes. And if they do introduce something new (for example pinning a simple app on the taskbar or adding a program to the Start Menu) it is pure hell and a complete absolute headache and hassle to do so. Mods, from gifted developers and individuals, help dampen that so it is a pinch easier. But MS has issue with those that do - look at Explorer Patcher. Microsoft can't stand the developer never lone the app because it introduced things that previous users wanted to go back to because they did not like the forced layout. So, they setup Windows Defender to snuff it out each time an individual downloads it or installs it.

Of course it is....however, windows 11 is quite stripped down after all these years compared to previous versions of the operating system. There is, and never was any kind of ability to customize an individuals PC to their choosing as they could easily in previous Windows versions. Windows 10 worked great, as well did Windows 7 - both with the ability to customize to one's needs. We won't mention Windows 8 however - as that was a complete utter failure statistically. Windows 11 however, is today's Windows 8. MS seems to careless about customization, and would rather release "new features" on an already broken Operating System rather than fixing the issues prior to releasing new features. Thus, in turn leads to individuals who are forced to upgrade, to maintain as much customization options to fit their needs to their own likings. Windows 11, quite frankly, is a complete mess, completely broken, and missing even the simplest of features (think taskbar, or better GUI transparency for example [Aero] ) as was Windows 8. Windows 11 in my opinion, is a complete joke that is mandated upon PC users. My point? Don't release an operating system with a completely broken foundation, and try to cover it up with releasing "new features" like an average person changes underwear. I even have Steam games that I can't open because they are too busy adding unpopular "new features" that target users for making money off of them that eorked very well on Windows 10 or other previous versions. If it's not broken - don't fix it, or at least don't inject code that inserts ads on someone's PC when they just want to use it for email or gaming purposes. But going back to the main issue here, People like us, have no choice but to join the Insiders program because we have hopes that maybe one day the airheads at MS will actually listen to PC users and bring back those features that was taken away from us that many of us are hoping with each new build they will bring back. They simply ignore us, and they haven't as of yet.
I don't agree with that assessment that this or that windows version is worse than those before, that logic would back us to DOS or Windows 1.0 which wouldn't be true at all. No windows or indeed any OS can be perfect and equally fit everyone, When switching from Unix, DOS was seen as a "Toy OS" and not for "real computers" which took whole room or even building but now held in a pocket. By the end of DOS and equivalents, DOS has grown so much that instruction books grew to size of an encyclopedia. To really use whole potential even end user had to know much of it. GUI like Windows, brought much more user friendly environment while leaving even more tools to developers. Gradually, Windows became more than pure OS, more of Operating environment. Being "graphical" it also got in realm of art and subject of much individual preference instead of scientific measure.
Hardware advancements necessitated changes and what was "modern" at given times forcing further divisions between users. Sheer number of users made those divisions even greater as we are individuals with own outlook at everything and so Windows too.
All in all, I see steady improvement in every windows version, in their ability as well as conformity to hardware, after all, OS runs on HW without which it wouldn't exist. from one or pair of CPUs at the beginning we are now up to dozens and rest of HW changed and advanced even more making things way more complicated in any sense so some has to be scaled down and that's not hardware.
Still don't see reason to much customization in test builds using 3rd party tools except for those that do not interfere with true windows operation and even less complaining they don't work blaming OS developer for it. MS is not even pretending that test/insider builds would work as intended let alone conformity with 3rd party SW. Those you test on their own and only developers of such SW are responsible for it.

If your Windows Update is not seeing the new build, no amount of UUPDump ISO and/or using the KB aka MSU will make Windows Update work again because as I and others mentioned in the past few builds, the only way to fix it is to:
Open regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost

Delete the entire WindowsSelfHost key
Close regedit and restart.
Check your insider settings as it requires selecting the Microsoft account and then picking the channel

Until the above is done, you will have the problem.

I still have not had the time to do the update yet because I want to be at the machine while it is downloading as I am using WAU Manager and not Windows Update so hopefully this will still be the current build when I get around to it.

I think I may have an idea of why MS decided to pull 3380. Every day, my system gets a BSOD for the following:

I agree with some parts of your belief, however MS completely barboned it releasing Windows 11 in the first place, especially 24H2. At least before releasing a product, ensure however that the OS is in a more functional state with what users are used to and want before blindingly releasing it to the public in the much current broken state. 24H2 seemed hurried and rushed, and initially frustrated the Windows community as well as chip and PC manufacturers. There were many articles from notable publishers about how broken the upgrade was through previous years of Windows 11 existence. I can't recall anything to the extent that is going on now with 24H2's headaches with previous versions of Windows. There simply are more issues that have yet to be fixed as they pile on the "new features". Fix explorer first, that's pretty much the backbone to all the new features they are introducing. Explorer without any mods has been broken for months now. All I'm saying is, fix the issue first, them work on new features. I even saw an article/ tutorial from @Brink about removing your device (phone) from Windows, and the end result was that it was not finished yet at the time and mentioned that it was broken as he was not able to remove his device, with an error that stated "please try that again later". If your going to introduce something in a build, please ensure it's a fully functioning feature before introducing it to the public.

Nor for me ... at present. Just tried this again and got the EMPTY-FILELIST error -- like last time.

Evidently, others are getting this now, as well.
