@elbmek, as for the knees, my wife had both done [too many years on hard floors when she was a nurse] and I walked the halls with her, important to do the physical therapy, last was over 10 years ago, took her 8 weeks of EIB [Employee Illness Benefit], went back for 1 day and retired at 70.

As to your description of your wife, mine is quite similar, appears to think I can read her mind.

When my hubby was still here he did all the washing up, we didn't have a dishwasher, and he'd do the hoovering as well. Towards the end he did stop hoovering but of course we didn't know he was dying.

OK he didn't do it to my standard but at least he did it because it was difficult for me.

I found that retirement wasn't what I expected. I went back as a part timer.

Never for me I do what I want when I want or am told to. Just lots of days out as we have so mayt nice places to visit around here

I had both knees replaced back in 2009 and they still do not hurt.

Ah, to be 81 again!

Funny, I was complaining to myself about the Taskbar calendar starting off late in the month then discovered it scrolled with the wheel to anywhere I liked it. Wow, this 11 is getting better all the time.

I have seen a couple of surveys which claim that people are at their happiest in later life. Personally, being retired suits me - life is now a series of projects - DIY, garden improvements, preparing a lecture/presentation for my local naturalists group (only happens once every two years), filming and editing holiday and family video, building a new PC (only every three or more years these days), holidays, entertaining family - especially the grandchildren. It's a good life, and much less stressful than life was during the working years.

So I would reject your premise. It is undoubtedly true that illness and other setbacks intervene, but there are many compensations. Let's focus on the positives.

I've been retired for more than 25 years, a couple things that helps is to figure out how to keep people from using your "spare time" and the other is to get involved with something new. A week after I retired was in a computer store/shop talking with lady owner's pretty blonde receptionist about having worked in an actual Firestone retail store while in high school, was offered a part time job 'for the holidays' stocking and cleaning. That turned into full time 2 weeks later then her tech left so I was put to building computers, 3 a day and installing ordered software. Asked to stay until new guy could do what I did, 3 months later 'retired' again. Been doing it self-employed and part-time since.

Not sure when I actually started working, but my first job was most likely a paper boy back in 1946. It seems like all I ever did was work at something while my parents thought I did nothing.

At least I remember during high school working at cutting lawns, operating a couple of gas stations, when the boss was gone, then auto, or racecar mechanic and musician. It seems like I was always working at something, making money.

Then, after dodging the draft for a couple of years I joined the USAF for 8 years; finished most of my college (B.S.E.E.) then got out to work for Ed Link in Binghamton, NY, as an engineer (the traveling kind), finished college, then when my family needed to settle down -- Eastern Airlines hired me for 16 years, then kicked us all out, so it was back into the Federal Government for 12 years and ended my 42-year career as either a technician, engineer, musician, astronomer, and whatever else I was interested in. I would have stayed with the U.S. Naval Observatory in Miami, but they closed the station, transferred me to the armpit of the USA, Washington, DC, for four years and that was all I could take. So I retired and moved back to Florida in 2001.

All the millions of miles traveling, and whatever, took its toll on me so retiring was fun until I turned 80 or so, then life became dodging pain and trying to stay off ladders. Hurricane IAN came by and did some damage that I just can't fix at 82. The old body just will not let me.

Well @Berton and @jeffbeish I think we have to hold out against the assumption which some might make from our lovely original poster's comment about her husband.

Mind you, I can identify with the knee problem, having broken my hip (in a local supermarket, I'm sorry to say - not climbing Halfdome or anything exciting) and having a hip replacement. I hope @glasskuter your knee is fully recovered now.

I do agree jeff that one is increasingly aware of things that can no longer be attempted. That is depressing. However, when I was sitting at home feeling sorry for myself after the hip incident, I did take some solace from some Zen advice: "The obstacle IS the path".

When I was much younger an older coworker gave me some advice about getting older, he said, "learn to pace yourself."

I guess a few years back remembered those words of wisdom and paced myself.
