Known and Resolved issues for Windows 11 version 24H2

 Windows message center:

Current status as of January 21, 2025

Windows 11, version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, is now broadly available.

Starting this week, we are expanding this latest Windows version’s phased rollout. We are gradually offering this update also to eligible devices running Windows 10, version 22H2.

If you have an eligible Windows 10 or Windows 11 device, you can check if the update is available by selecting Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates. If your device is ready for the update, you’ll see the option to Download and install Windows 11, version 24H2.

Devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, versions 23H2 and 22H2 that are not managed by IT departments will receive the update automatically. Users can choose the time to restart their device or postpone the update.

For Copilot+ PC devices, new features will continue rolling out in phases to select devices and markets in the Windows Insider community. Note that availability may differ based on the various silicon platforms.

We will regularly share more information on the Windows 11 2024 Update rollout on this page.

There appears to be two new holds Auto HDR might cause games to stop responding or display incorrect colors and Some devices that have Dirac Audio with cridspapo.dll might lose audio output

The former (Auto HDR) would seem to be a quite common setting and matches my safeguard id
I've got that Auto HDR issue on my desktop PC (safeguard ID: 55382406). It is easily mitigated as explained by MS.

Although the MS Known Issues page shows them as Mitigated, disabling Auto HDR removes a valuable W11 feature. I've had little success enabling the HDR "filter" added with the Nvidia App - one success with a Steam game but none with Windows Store (Game Pass) games - and now a performance hit has emerged - whereas Auto HDR is reliable and useful. For the Dirac issue, although likely less common, I can't spot any work-around mentioned at all.

Perhaps they ought to list these as "Confirmed" for now.

In the software industry, "Mitigated" does not equate to "Resolved". It simply means MS provided a short-term fix/workaround to stop the crashing or bad behavior, while they and/or partners work on a more general solution.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 KB5044284 / KB5046617 can't install new updates

Issues might occur with media which installs the October or November update

When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates. This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024).

Please note, this only occurs when utilizing media - such as CD and USB flash drives - to install Windows 11, version 24H2. This issue does not occur for devices where the October 2024 security update or the November 2024 security updates are installed via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Workaround: To prevent issues, do not install Windows 11, version 24H2 which installs the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. Instead, ensure that media used to install Windows 11, version 24H2, includes the December 2024 monthly security update (released December 10, 2024), or later.

Next steps: We are working on a resolution and will provide more information when it is available.

Affected platforms:

Client: Windows 11, version 24H2
Server: None

I can't even install from USB media at all, if the ISO has been modified.

My usual workflow is to:

1. Use UUP to create an up to date ISO
2. Use Hyper-V to install and configure.
3. Use DISM to capture the image.
4. Use deployment tools to author a new ISO.
5. Install on a system

But, this gets to about 10% of the blue installing screen, and then craps out with a Windows 11 installation failed alert.
I thought it was my USB, so I tried the bog standard Oct release, that works fine. It's basically any ISO that's been modified via UUP/DISM/Rufus that seems to fail.

I really don't want to have to go through all the fine-tuning of settings/app installations again, does anyone have any workarounds or knowledge I'm lacking here?

playing around i found out that (not sure if there is a thread as i didn't see one):

File Explorer Option: Restore Previous Folder Windows at Logon Works IF you have
Settings > Accounts > Sign-in Options > Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when i sign back in = DISABLED

if the Setting is Enabled, the Restore does not work. it's like it has to be one or the other...

EDIT:

just tested this on my main 23h2 rig and it works as well. so the Restore at logon (which has been broken for a LONG TIME) is now functional again... just not with Restartable apps on simultaneously

Only with 23H2 though, the feature isn't available on 24H2 yet.

Oop's my bad, I was thinking of restore previous TABS on login which I had with the recent Beta build of 23H2. Sorry about that. It was a nice feature I don't have on 24H2.
