I think that difference is down to the ways our respective health services are funded.

I guess that you pay on use, either out of your pocket or by insurance. Mine is free at point of use.

I have paid nothing for my GP appointments, blood tests, MRI scans, or therapy. It's all funded from general taxation I've paid throughout my working life. Makes no difference that I'm retired now and effectively a non-taxpayer.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

If I need to see a doctor and he is not open there are what they call urgent care places now open (a new thing) and see a doctor. If I fall and break my leg I can get transported to a hospital and go to the emergency room to get taken care of. If I need to have what they call an outpatient procedure done by one of my specialists I go to a surgery center.

That's the way it used to be with GPs here when I was young. You turned up and waited your turn. Before COVID you could get a face to face appointment but you would have to wait at least a week for it, and the wait was getting longer. I think GPs in general have too many patients on their books. They have every incentive to do that as most of their pay from the NHS is based on the size of the patient list, not on how many patients they see.

Yes, we have to pay when services are rendered here either cash or insurance. No government health plan yet.

If you can pay, then an express service should be available. We do also have private health care available here. That's fast - but at as price. The other catch is that if you opt to go the private route you also opt out of the NHS for any treatment that may become needed for the condition being investigated.

My MRI scan, for example, would have cost me a minimum of £200.

For an MRI scan here you would have to add a zero to your minimum. My visit to see my GP is $80.
If you have a health issue that needs attention you can go to an emergency room and get help no matter your ability to pay.
