We now know the trade in offers that will be available to those with older V8, v7, and v6 one-time licences, and for recently purchased perpetual v8 licences.

Home users have 6 months from the launch of Reflect X to decide which option suits them best. Step-by-step instructions to obtain either option from the grace period will be published this week.

For Reflect Home users who purchased V8 before July 1, 2024:
You are eligible for two options. The first option is 50% off Annual plans for life. Option 2 is our “Better than Black Friday 2024 Offer:” 3 years for the price of 2:

If you choose 50% off annual plans for life, you will have to trade in your current Reflect Home V8 license.

If you choose 3 years for the price of 2, you can keep your Reflect Home V8 license. This amount must be paid up front and at the end of the plan, customers may renew based on offers available at the time (or return to your one-time license.)

Ah, looks like they crushed the bug that I encountered: "A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest."

I think it was due to the definition of my backup created with Reflect 8. I re-did within Reflect X (original build) and it restored just fine,.

For what it's worth, Reflect has never let me down when it mattered. But I'll still boot my images regularly into a VM just to test that they work and I'd do the same with any other imaging software.

One would have to wait an infinite time to shake out all bugs. Bugs by definition are unknown and there are just too many combinations of hardware and software to guarantee any product is bug free.

Another issue is Windows changes as well, so chasing the "remaining" bugs can be futile as by the time that is done, some new bugs pop up with the next udate, and you just chase your tail ad nauseam.

There comes a point where you just have to put the product out in the wild.

In the end it is a trade off between revenue and reputation - too many bugs, reputation plummets. Too long to bring out new features etc, sales plummet due to lack of development.

I think the Reflect Team do a great job, as most reported bugs are pretty obscure and rarely affect the average person.

I went backwards and forwards with Macrium support on this exact "issue" thinking there was a bug somewhere.

As it turns out, Windows isn't exactly very helpful when it comes to reporting Recycle Bin contents; especially for SIDs that may have been a part of a previous Windows install or the recycle bin in question is on a drive that isn't an OS drive / formatted between installs.

In my case, I have a secondary HDD drive that's used only for backup purposes. At some point, I've not cleared the recycle bin for my E: drive before I've run a fresh Windows install which resulted in ~5GB of data stuck in limbo. Visible to the Macrium exclusion options but not easily visible anywhere else within Windows unless you go messing around with permissions etc.

If you want to browse the contents before blindly deleting, the easiest way to do so is using WizTree.

To do so:
  1. Open WizTree and accept elevation prompt.
  2. On the "Select" drop down, choose "Select Folder".
  3. For each drive letter, enter the following:
    Code: 
    C:\$RECYCLE.BIN
This will allow you to easily browse the contents of the recycle bin that you can't otherwise see.

If you are absolutely certain that the recycle bin should be empty (i.e. you are the only user and it shows empty everywhere else) and you wish to simply "reset" it by clearing all contents:
  1. Again, make absolutely sure that the recycle bin is or should be "empty".
  2. Once confirming the above, open an elevated CMD window.
  3. Run the following command for each active drive letter.
    THIS WILL REMOVE DATA FROM THE RECYCLE BIN FOR EVERY USER
    Code: 
    rd /s /q C:\$RECYCLE.BIN

The exclusions are global settings. Better to think of the settings as meaning "Potential savings depending on which drives/ partitions you select to backup."

If you backup say only C drive, your recycle bin savings will only be that on C drive.

Unfortunately Windows often leaves recycle data in "orphaned" hidden folders but not actually accessible from the recycle bin.

The other day, I found 3GB of orphaned folders on E drive. Credit to Macrium Reflect VX including these in its numbers which prompted me to search for them usin Treesize. I promptly deleted tham and then MR VX reported 0 bytes for recycle bin.

In the end, it is Windows poor cleanup (as you intimate) that is the issue not MR VX.

The simplest way to empty an external drive's recycle bin of all contents, whether from current accounts or redundant ones, is to turn off recycling for that drive, delete its $RECYCLE.BIN, then turn it back on again. Windows will recreate an empty recycle bin.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. But Site Manager is still free. At least for now.

I decided for my main laptop, sacrificing one V8.1 licence (I had 5) for cost £18 pa (barely cost of 3 pints of Stella a year) was worth it to always be at leading edge. I stayed in last night and saved at least twice that LOL.

It is definitely faster but the new ability to exclude files and folders from the GUI is a great change.

I backed up pc selecting to remove software distribution download files (amongst others), then restored it (using Rapid Delta Restore) and all the files were deleted - restore took about 30 seconds.

I ended up getting rid of over 3GB of crap with no effort.

The ability is not new, it was possible in v8 using registry edits and the Microsoft VSS Optimization Writer. I've used it in v8 to exclude the .vhdx files on a native boot machine. What's new for Reflect X is a specific Macrium VSS and a GUI to set exclusions for it.

We've created a new Macrium VSS writer that enables exclusion of unwanted files from VSS Snapshots. Using this filter, you can exclude various standard file categories, specific files, or apply wildcard filters recursively to selected folders....

...Microsoft VSS includes the ability to exclude file patterns from snapshots. Although this can be useful in removing unnecessary files from images and clones the functionality isn't 100% reliable. Removing files is reliant on the VSS Optimization Writer and the if the files are not removed before the VSS timeout time has elapsed then snapshots may not exclude all the desired files. However, In general, unless you are removing many thousands of files then there shouldn't be a problem.

If you want to exclude native boot .vhdx files and you only use .vhdx files for windows rather than classical NTFS disks etc then it seems that the whole point of using this type of software for system backup is getting redundant. Backing up and archiving of data is another topic of course.

But I don't only boot vhdx. I multi-boot conventionally installed Windows plus Insider builds as vhdx. The RTM has a monthly image backup, in line with its Patch Tuesday updates. The Insider builds can change from week to week. Those I exclude from the RTM build's image and back up separately as and when there's a new Insider build.
