I didn't even know people used internal courier modems, I know people used internal Sportsters though.

Ha. I may have gotten my names mixed up - but I'm almost positive I had a Courier- based modem that was internal at one point in time, because I've never had an external modem.

The 33k with the upgradeable firmware to enable 56K was definitely a Sportster though, now that I think about it. The one that came from Gateway I want to say was a Courier (or else a Courier-based OEM project). But that Gateway is long gone, so I have no way of verifying that.

I may, in fact, be completely off base (and not remembering correctly) and everything I had was, in fact, Sporster, not Courier.

It would be easy to tell since the Courier modems were atleast $800 a piece if not higher and all of them had a Intel 80186 CPU. So hard to tell what exact model you had unless you still had the modem. LOL.

Courier never had OEM models. Never knew Gateway was taken over by eMachines and then Acer. Sure wished Computer Shopper magazine was still around. heh.

Then I am mistaken lol. I'm pretty sure they weren't throwing in modems with an 8086 onboard in a computer that only had an 80486 as primary CPU!

:ROFLMAO:

8086/8088 were known CPUs, the 80186/80188 are supposedly 16 bit CPUs but the only thing is computers used 80286's.

Anyways, here's a video I downloaded awhile back from Facebook...

I always liked the Telebit PEP (Packetized Ensemble Protocol) sound the best:
which is described as:
whalesong
The peculiar clicking and whooshing sounds made by a PEP modem such as the Telebit Trailblazer as it tries to synchronize with another PEP modem for their special high-speed mode. This sound isn't anything like the normal two-tone handshake between conventional modems and is instantly recognizable to anyone who has heard it more than once. It sounds, in fact, very much like whale songs. This noise is also called "the moose call" or "moose tones".

Ahhh, that makes sense. I never knew there was a real 80186 line until now.

Thanks for the wiki article, as I never knew it wasn't compatible with 8086/8088 code, always wondered what made it different than the 80286.
