Me too, I tried a clean install of 24H2 on a 13 year old Legacy BIOS laptop with a Pentium B950 and an SSD in post #2,051.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

I used the /product server workaround to get 24H2 installed on my old Asus i7 laptop with 12GB RAM. This laptop does have the popcnt on the chip, so that wasn't an issue, but I did have to do the appraiserres.dll trick to get it from 22H2 to 23H2, but this didn't work for the 24H2 and had to use the /product server trick. This is still a fantastic machine and runs circles around many newer laptops. Windows 11 runs better than any OS I've had.

My only issue is I wonder if I made a mistake by putting the Dev version 26100 on it instead of the Canary? Will I still get the monthly Windows Updates like I have for 23H2?

Updates should install fine, except those upgrading to a new version. I would install the general release version when out to return to the standard (non-Insider) channel.

I actually already received 3 updates for 24H2, so that works. I saw some posts that said I could never go to the public version without wiping with a clean install, and others say I could use the same method I used to install this one when the public ISO gets released. I would rather not wipe the device, so hoping I didn't make a big mistake.

26100 is the release track for production 24H2 Windows. If you're receiving normal 24H2 updates, there's no need to re-install from scratch.

Whenever 24H2 reaches official RTM status, MS will push an update which may be a normal Monthly Update (or a separate one) and that will bring you to the same level as someone who installed from the ISO.

You're already on 26100, so it's not a big deal.

Yes...as a newbie here, it's a bit intimidating to seek out in >100 pages of posts the kernels of wisdom. Is there another place that sets out the different possible methods (Rufus, /product server, appraiserres.dll, W10 installer...) and how to pick the right defeat method according to your situation (whether the failing criteria is RAM, CPU, instruction set, TPM...)?

Up to 23H2 the upgrade methods are to download the ISO and either create a patched USB flash drive with Rufus, or mount it (open with File Explorer) and manually bypass compatibility check. If you create the patched USB with Rufus, then disconnect from the internet and run Setup from there. If you mount the ISO directly, disconnect from the internet, run Setup and replace a specific hidden file before proceeding with the upgrade. Alternatively you disconnect from the internet and run Setup with the /product server parameters. As you noticed in every case you must disconnect from the internet and don't connect again until the upgrade is complete.

The instructions below work in all situations (except upgrade doesn't work in the Canary Channel build 27686+).

- Windows 11 24H2 requires a CPU with PopCnt support (2008 or newer CPU).
- Works with or without an internet connection.
- Tested in a virtual machine (legacy BIOS only, no UEFI, no TPM).

- Download Windows 11 ISO file.

How to bypass Windows 11 23H2/24H2 system requirements to upgrade from ISO file?

Download Windows 11 ISO file. Mount the ISO file. Run the following command.

<full path of setupprep.exe file in sources folder> /product server

For example: D:\sources\setupprep.exe /product server

setupprep.png

In this mode, the Windows 11 installer thinks it is installing Windows Server Edition and does not check the Windows 11 system requirements.

I have just done an in-place upgrade of the 23H2 on my unsupported System Two to today's official release of 24H2. I used hybrid install media, a 23H2 install USB with sources\install.esd replaced with the one from a 24H2 USB, so that I could still use the appraiserres workaround.

All went smoothly, but on first startup in 24H2 my desktop was filled with compatibility warnings that a driver couldn't be loaded. All were for ALSysIO.sys, used by CoreTemp from Alcpu. I was using an old version, updating to the latest CoreTemp v1.18.1 sorted that out.

The only other thing I did was to copy Wordpad from C:\Windows.old\Programs\Windows NT\Accessories to another folder so that I still had it available, should I need it, now that it has been removed from 24H2.

You mentioned this was the "official" 24H2 release. So you're saying the public release ISO is available?

The public download page is being hammered at the expiring link creation step. I believe MCT has been updated, because a new products.cab has been pushed out.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

I'm downloading the ISO right now but for some reason it downloads at very low speed (150KB/sec). I will just let it overnight (local time 23:45) and hopefully will have finished in the morning.

It doesn't matter. As soon as we install all updates it should go to the latest build.

I did an in-place upgrade on my unsupported System Two, I got 26100.1742. Whether you make an ISO with the MCT with its install.esd, or directly download the ISO from Microsoft with the install.wim (I have done both) you will get an ISO containing 26100.1742.
