Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

Try creating a VM -- then you can have a "Virtual disk" containing EFI sec boot, an emulated TPM and probably on some systems a Virtual CPU that will pass the W11 hardware test even if it's on an older MBR system. It's not as hard as you think. To install though the Virtual CPU needs 2 cores minimum, Virtual memory of 4K and HDD (or SSD) space of > 48 GB.

Using dism /Apply-Image to install rather than the classical setup.exe from the windows iso often works better. (New / clean install required though rather than updat if you use this method. Once installed regular WU shouild work.

Open This PC, right-click on the Windows drive (C) and click on Properties. Click to clean up the disk, including system files. Check all the boxes. After that press Win+R to open the Run window and execute msconfig. Go to Services tab and check to hide all Microsoft services. Uncheck all boxes to disable all non-Microsoft services to load at startup. Now go to the Startup tab and click to open the startup applications. Disable them all. If you have any antivirus disable it until next startup. If you don't, go to Settings, Security and disable Windows Defender, just in case. Mount the Windows 11 ISO and start Setup. Before proceeding replace the file with an empty dummy, see my previous posts for details. Also click to change how Setup handles updates and select to NOT install Windows updates during installation. Proceed with the installation. If you are using the correct language you should be offered to keep both your apps and data.

Important: I forgot to say you must disconnect from the internet to avoid any drivers or other updates interfering with the installation. Also it is a good idea to restart so no third party application will load with Windows. This makes the upgrade faster since more resources are free and reduces the risk any application interrupting the upgrade. If you restart before the installation don't forget to disable the antivirus or Windows Defender again.

I precisely followed your recipe, but have the the same problem as enite: I reach the license agreement then something like We're getting things ready is shown for a while and then I end up with We can't tell if your PC is ready to continue installing Windows 11. Try restarting Setup.

Is there anything else that has to be done?

Have you installed all available updates for 21H2? If you haven't, do that since an update may fix some bugs and improve compatibility. Also make sure all your drivers are updated (no yellow ! in Device Manager). Then restart and try again.

Kali mera spapakons, yes 21H2, all updates, all drivers up to date, no yellow exclamation marks.

It's an UEFI dual boot system with the original NT boot loader (black background, white characters, selected OS gehts inverted: line background white, black characters, no mouse support, only keyboard), not the Windows 11 one (light blue background, white characters, mouse support) with Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Download latest official Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft and upgrade from there. Avoid any unknown ISOs.

Or do you mean to boot from the ISO?

In this case: Will it respect the dual boot installation? I have my doubts.

No, I mean to mount the ISO from Windows and start Setup from there. Sometimes an old driver may cause problems. I had difficulty upgrading to Windows 10 v1909 back then because of mixed graphics drivers. For some reason some components were of earlier version than the others. Installing latest graphics drivers could not fix it. The solution was to use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely remove the drivers and then install latest drivers again. This time all components were updated to the latest version and upgrade could proceed.

I suggest you try again and post screenshots of any errors so we can help you further.

That's what I did. Only that I copied the content of the mounted ISO to a directory, because I wasn't sure if after a reboot the content would be still needed and if the mounted ISO would still be mounted.

Installing Windows 11 at that time from Windows 10 with that method worked with latest (Windows 10) AMD FirePro W2100 drivers enabled.

I'll try to make a screen video later today. There are no real errors shown. Perhaps some of the log files that the setup is creating could be of any help, but I'm not enough Windows 11 installation expert to be able to interpret them.

No need to copy the files, just run Setup. On first restart the ISO will be unmounted. That is why Setup copies all necessary files before installing and then restarts to proceed.

Need help to be able to upgrade 22H2 but need to bypass dGPU or said upgrade install crashes.

My laptop have all the official requests by Microsft TPM, etc, but the discreet GPU AMD 520(R5 M330) have been a trouble even in W10 so it has been disabled in Device Manager and laptop run well that way. Unfortunatly the upgrade seem to wake it up.

If I understand correctly, you have problems with a graphics driver update. Apart from disabling Windows Update during installation and keeping the computer disconnected from the internet, you can also do another workaround. Go to Device Manager, Display Adapters and manually "update" the driver to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. This hopefully will make Setup ignore any graphics drivers updates since the best possible driver is already installed. You may now follow my guide on earlier post and proceed with the upgrade.

The workarounds have been discussed many times in this thread. For a clean installation you either boot from the Windows 11 ISO and hack the Registry before proceeding, or you boot from a hybrid Windows 10/11 ISO (see older posts). The Registry can be hacked either by manually changing the keys or using a script. You can also use Rufus to create a patched USB from the Windows 11 ISO. For upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 or from an old Windows 11 version to a newer you mount the Windows 11 ISO and replace the file appraiserres.dll with an empty dummy. Alternatively you can use the patched USB you create with Rufus.

You don't hack the registry, you reconfigure it. There's a slight difference as these additions to the registry is supported features. We should be a bit careful what words we use. :wink:
