Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


Been about 6 canary builds since i updated & today figured i'd get to it but the AppraiserRes.dll swap with WU did not work.

What's up?...been outta the loop for a bit. Whadda we need to do now?

Yes, this latest Canary build 25967 is the first new build for which that trick no longer works. 25951 was the last one that it worked for. MS seem to be clamping down on bypassing the system checks for an unsupported device. See post #9 here, and the discussion in subsequent posts. As yet no one has found a new workaround....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

I stopped running insider builds temporarily starting about 2 months ago (rough guesstimate).

Just out of curiosity, are we talking only about upgrade installations? Is it still possible to perform a clean install of these builds while bypassing the system requirements?

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

We are talking about clean installs and upgrades, either in-place or through Windows Update. The latest 25967 Canary build cannot be bypassed by the usual workarounds. We are not (yet) talking about the Dev, Beta, RP or public builds, just Canary for now. The only way found so far to do a clean install has been by making hybrid install media.

Forgive my ignorance, but due to my lack of working with insider builds other than simply letting it install updates via Windows update, I don't do much with them. Is there an ISO I can download of this build? I'd like to try a couple of things.

Hurray! At least the hybrid USB flash drive method works, albeit only for Legacy BIOS installations. Since I don't usually do an UEFI installation, it suits me fine. In case you were wandering, it is a standard Windows 10 64-bit USB flash drive (Legacy BIOS version) with the file sources\install.esd (or .img) replaced by the respective file from Windows 11 ISO. So you run Windows 10 Setup with not a single compatibility check to install Windows 11.

There is no official Windows 11 ISO for Insider's versions (Canary or Dev), but you can download the relevant files and compile it from UUP Dump.

UUPdump.net still seems to be down. While there are alternatives appearing, such uupdump.ee, you may prefer to download and run your own local server version instead. I've just run uupdump-x64.7z to make my ISO. For details see:

Welp, i did it.

However i could only do an in place upgrade keeping Personal Files with an .iso using a Windows Server setup environment. In the Deskmodder forum you'll find a 25967.1000.GALLIUM-X64-DE-XXXL-ZERO-LIMIT-CANARY.V26.iso

Extract it and add the EN-US folder from another iso & change the language.ini to En-Us, that will put the install environment in english but once in windows you'll need to navigate in german to settings & add english-us...it's not that hard...google image helps.

Twitter user Bob Pony revealed a new trick this week that allows users to bypass system requirements check during the installation of Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system.


All that needs to be done is to run the installation with the parameter /product server. One option to do so is to open a command prompt window, switch to the Windows installation media drive and run setup /product server to start the process.

It's not actually that new, AveYo (of MediaCreationTool.bat fame) on Github was already using it in 2022.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October.     My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

When 23H2 ISO is officially released from Microsoft, I will try the old method (replace the appraiserres.dll file and stay disconnected from the internet) to see if it still works. If it doesn't, I will try this new workaround. I will post my results here.

FWIW, the appraserres trick still works for today's Dev build release. So far the only build that the old methods don't work for is the current Canary build.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
