Looking to get a new Laptop PC, looking for advice, opinions, help

On my systems I use multiple virtual machines at once, gaming, work etc.
@andrew129260 (any and all helpful responses welcome) Hi, not sure if you will see this post, but I am getting close, like real close to pulling the trigger on a new laptop and was wondering what your opinion, good or bad, on this computer and specs are, besides the price(s).

I'd love to know your are some components better then other if i would to get one if so what, and if you aren't sure I understand just let me know.

I'll recommend the Dell XPS line. I've had 6 (six) Dell XPS laptops in the past couple of decades. Ask me why and I'll write you several paragraphs.

Click on "My Computer" below to see my current Dell XPS. It's the best one yet.

@mickey52 What do you mean, thank god not a western?

So the 16-7640 you mentioned is what you have and are the the RAM soldered? Also it is almost exactly like the one im asking about, but I don't want a 2 in 1 or touch screen.

If you buy Dell at best buy don't you get the same dell warranty extension options?

that is what steered me away from HP theirs is soldered in Dell you can added on more ram. My thoughts are I never thought I would need more ram but ya never know what the next five years demands will be you may need 32 Ram.

Unfortunately more & more manufacturers are soldering in the RAM making planned obsolescence come a lot sooner, so you have to do some research to find out what few models that are still out there that allow you to upgrade the RAM the old-fashioned way.

It's a sh*tty practice they're doing to copy Apple who are notorious for soldering in their RAM on their Macbooks. A total ripoff.

Bear in mind that the manufacturers may have no choice in the future. Some of the new Intel CPUs have all system memory in the CPU package - there is no way to add RAM to the MB. So have to buy the CPU model that has the amount of RAM.

From Copilot:

Laptop manufacturers are increasingly moving to soldered RAM for several reasons:
  1. Space-saving: Soldering RAM directly onto the motherboard allows manufacturers to create thinner and lighter laptops. This is especially important for ultrabooks and high-performance gaming laptops.
  2. Battery life: Soldered RAM can improve power efficiency, leading to longer battery life. This is achieved by reducing the space needed for RAM slots and optimizing the overall design.
  3. Cooling: With more space available, manufacturers can improve cooling solutions, which is crucial for high-performance laptops.
  4. Design flexibility: Soldered RAM provides more flexibility in the design and layout of internal components, allowing for better use of space and potentially larger batteries.
While these benefits are significant, there are downsides, such as the inability to upgrade or repair the RAM easily. This trade-off is something consumers need to consider when choosing a laptop.

@TraderGary yes i know most of that but thank you for providing the info. I went down to BestBuy today just to look at the Laptops and get a feel for their key boards and damm it, this guy through an AUSU 15.6 OLED 24GB Ram 2000GB storage at me and said he liked Samsung, but I think Im still with DELL. I saw the Dell G3 Gaming laptop and liked its feel, also now see there is a Dell G16 on sail.. Gary you said above that you like XP line WHY and for some reason I though you in a different post said you liked Lattitude and that you are a refubished pc guy, i might be mistaken

Oh that's what they say.... 🤨 🤨 And I believe you. But the bottom line is money and this is all a part of the way of justifying and marketing for the future.

It's not paranoia. It's not black helicopters falling out of the sky. Or Elvis landing in my back yard singing Hound Dog. It's about revenue and parting more dollars from your pocket, especially in years when PC sales are tight and they want to maximize profits for their shareholders. If I was a shareholder, I'd want that too.

Planned obsolescence, accelerated.

And btw, 16GB soldered ram is a total ripoff. It might be considered adequate for today, but in a year or two's time when Co-pilot and AI demand more resources, we will be having plenty of people coming back on here and whining & complaining about how slow their machines are because they couldn't afford to future-proof them.

You watch. I guarantee it. It will happen.
