Macrium Reflect moving to lease model.

Well, I removed AOMEI as a possible replacement if Macrium gets too pricey.
I downloaded the AOMEI trial version. I did a full disc backup of my Win 11 disc (an SSD). After 1 hour it was only at 17%. Macrium only took 32 minutes to do the identical task (full disc image).

Weird. It works pretty quickly for me.

@Josey Wales Yes this topic is about Macrium going to lease, but it all ties together with the ramifications of the May update (also second phase July update). Folks need to be informed so they can either decide to lease Macrium or stay with the version they already have.

As it stands today, there are more questions than answers about whether Macrium will offer a means for older versions of Macrium to create new workable boot media using the new WinPE (that MS hasn't even released yet) that will include the May and July updates. Many people using secure boot have already manually applied the revocations referred to in the May update and after the first of the year(or sooner) MS will automatically apply those revocations to ALL secure boot systems.

At this point, because of so many unaswered questions, some here believe all one needs to do to boot from their current Macrium recovery media is to turn secure boot off. Some of us, however, read the gobbly gook we've been given so far to say that once the revocations have been applied to a secure boot system, recovery media we now have will not work...period.

This secure boot revocation thing is confusing so i will rely on the expert advice from forum members here to guide me if and when the need arises.
In the mean time I will use Macrium until it falls over and also R-Drive Image

Yeah think i'll wait for Microsoft to apply the secure boot revocation thing automatically, confusing for me to do it manually, i thought about doing it manually on my Windows 11 Pro Desktop, then i decided too confusing, so was like i'll wait.

And just keep my Macrium Reflect backups done regularly and system running as good as i can possibly have it

Macrium is only one of my 3 backup strategies that all run concurrently. I could never put all my trust in only one strategy.

Macrium will still use the same method of Payment (two ways To choose from:

I'm with you on that strategy.

I perform Macrium full disk image backups with verification, and I do file replication of all important data to multiple locations, including offsite.

I also on a regular basis test my backups and occasionally do full checksum tests of backed up data. In fact, I'm especially glad I do that because it helped me to recently discover that I have a destination SSD that is going bad. One day everything checks out fine, a week later I have unreadable files on that destination. Size and time and date stamp on those files look good, but when you actually try to read the files to do a checksum check, the files are unreadable. I noticed that every couple weeks I have a few more files that become unreadable even though in every case these were files that have not changed in months. So, clearly that SSD is failing.

The lesson: As TraderGary notes, don't put all your trust in one strategy, especially if your data is important to you!

I back up to a Samsung SSD external drive and also to a Portable NVME Drive which I keep in a fireproof Lock Box.

Payment methods had nothing to do with the purpose of my post. Neither did the screenshot . My remarks centered around the UEFI revocations and their affect on viable Macrium recovery media for secure boot systems, especially recovery media created in Macrium Free which is no longer supported. As of today 8.1 media is also affected if the revocations have been manually applied.

Anything that can affect a user being able to use his recovery media after the revocations are applied needs to be taken into consideration and fully understood before when one makes his choices going forward. Right now,I can see my remarks and concerns are being totally misunderstood by those reading this so I'll leave it be going forward. It's all conjecture at this point anyway as Marium had not addressed how this issue will be handled in their existing products. Confusion surrounds the UEFI revocations and confusion surrounds Macrium's future.

Whether all you folks out there using backup solutions other than Macrium know it or not, this same issue will affect you as well.

Iirc the free version will use either winre or it has an option to browse to some other pe file which says something like choose custom wim..

I dont see why it is a problem. Either let it use the updated winre on the system, or browse to an updated wim file using that option.

Everything is going to subscription licenses seems like. Used to, things were a one time purchase. . Companies getting greedy

As I don't use Secure Boot, hopefully any revocations MS are implementing won't affect me. I'll still likely be buying/leasing Macrium 9 as it does what I need it to do.

Well yes, why pay once for software when you can pay monthly/yearly?! Technically using PC Game Pass is the same thing, as you pay a sub to play games rather than (or as well as) buying them

That's not the point -- nobody (apart from Ms "Owns Windows") -- You pay to use it -- the argument here in this section I assume is whether you would rather pay a "One time license" or continual monthly / annual recurring subscriptions.

Obviously for a company a subscription model looks as if it's a better idea since they can get a continual cash flow -- however in "American consultantese speak" --"We're though unfortunately experiencing a high level of consumer resistance" -- i.e in plain English --"Prices too B---dy High".

For some things subscriptions might make sense e.g "Leasing a car" these days instead of outright buying but for most software -- No thanks !!!!.I'd rather have a 1 time license. It invariably works out cheaper in the long run if you don't change and upgrade every 5 mins. For example Office 2010 still works perfectly for me on a few test machines i'm using. Why should I pay 99 USD a year for Office/365 if I don't need or use the "newer features".

Also if these cheap copies of Office2021 still work for a couple of years then why on earth go subscription.

I still think though any OS should have a backup facility built into it even if it's relatively crude -- e.g Linux can back anything up with the rsync and dd commands. I'm not against 3rd party products but they have to be cost effective and offer more functionality than say the built inproduct. Macrium was always excellent but I don't need it any more so I'm afraid thats one customer here theyve lost -- and I'm sure I won't be alone.
