Macrium Reflect moving to lease model.

A single (perpetual) licence in the uk is £57.99 not £70. However, the problem for me is that I would need 2 licences, and I'm certainly not paying for 4. I don't object to subscriptions, as so many here seem to do, but I think they've set it a bit too high. I will probably change to something else in a year or so.

yeah, seems they are incentivizing the annual plan. In the US, it's $49.99 for 1 computer, and $99.98 for 4. So, from a financial standpoint, there is no logical reason to buy 2 or 3 licenses, as the 4 pack is the same as 2 computers.

On the perpetual front, 1 PC is $79.99, so 2 would be $159.98....so still advantageous to only buy 2 licenses if that's what you need. However, if you were to buy 3, you would be at $239.97 which is the price of the 4 pack. So, it's buy 3 and get 1 free.

The question for you, is 2 computers at $159.98 worth it?

I posted to this thread because I thought I could learn from it about how to image the 3 systems I have running (3/Win10; 1/Win11) What I seem to have learned from this thread is that the software I invested in was probably a mistake and that you and folk like you probably have a better approach. Did this thread get picked up (if so, what is the new thread) and has the forum (for whom I have the highest respect) ever figure out a better imaging/backup solution? (thanks)

I just invested in Macrium--4 of them--for a significant savings. (It was only at the 4 item level that this level savings kicked in.). I wasn't looking hard, but I didn't notice any One-time purchase offers.

I have what I think might be one of the 'Free' versions but am so ignorant as to how to implement the program that I thought I should go for a supported version--at least the first time around.

Mostly, it's critical that my 2/Win10 systems remain in-tact and that my 1/Win11 system, careening between predictable and chaotic, stay alive long enough (I heard of a switch to Win12 this year) to give me time to decide whether it's going to become Win10.

I hope I find this imaging program as indispensable as most on this forum indicate.

Did you use Macrium as only an imaging program or as an imaging AND backup program?

There is no right or wrong way when is comes to having a backup plan nor what is appropriate for one would not be appropriate for the other's situation. The important thing is that you have a plan.

For me and the way I use my computer, I am more comfortable making images. I manually image my system drive (about 90 gb in size) every 1-2 weeks or any time major changes are made to my system. I can image this drive in about 5 minutes and I can completely restore that system image in about 4 minutes.
I keep multiple images and alternate between 2 backup drives simply because I have a lot of external storage.

I image my working data drive (about 100 gb) less often because it doesn't change that much, images made once every 1-2 months. None of the data I deal with on a daily basis is critical and so important to me that I couldn't do without it nor does the data drive change that much from one image to another.
I'm not a photo enthusiaist, gamer, audiophile, etc nor do I have sensitive data like a work computer would have so dealing with differential or incremental backups would not make much sense for my situation.

Macrium Home pricing currently contains elements of both knowing marketing of the existing full purchase customer base and a hard push into annual leasing. This only relates to version 8 of course. We may hope that version 9 when released deals competently with the imminent "revocation" treatment from MS, although the price of Macrium version 9 is not set as yet.

As it stands, Macrium's Black Friday offer makes a 3/4 licence outright purchase considerably dearer than annual rentals for 3/4 licences, until about year 5 when the costs become close to equivalent (yes, a 3 copy rental or purchase is not offered, only 1 or 4). So as it stands, for 2 individual, separate copy licences the annual rental is about equal to 6 continuous years for full purchase. That is, about twice the normal length of time between releases of successive versions. This is a very clear incentive to entice rental sales since full, individual purchases need 5 or 6 years to break even against the annual rentals and within that period, new versions will be released. You needn't buy the newer versions of course, but if MS breaks something Macrium is not obligated to patch for it on obsoleted versions.

Given that, version 9 seems due soon enough, as version 8 (with updates) has been around a while now. My earlier comment from about 5 months ago was not too cynical at all. A full outright purchase needs 5-6 years to amortise against annual rental but newer versions in that period annuls that if one expects patches for the Missouri Breaks (MS breaking something).

A quick question about Macrium. I've not been able to successfully Register/LogIn to Macrium...what with Google wanting me to log in with them (something different than just wanting to send my phone a number)...I so currently I can't talk to Macrium and just may have to send Macrium back...

This is the first screen Macrium presents. I have no idea which 'Custom' option to install. No information has been provided.
- And compared to the first three options it seems that Installing a Desktop Shortcut isn't exactly state-of-the-art program installation!
-Am I to understand that the first two options (neither explained!!) are not available in the "this edition" I just bought???

Those of you who went with the Free Macrium, where can I find documentation?

@jro11 What your screenshot shows is the installation screen for the FREE version, not a paid-for version. Once you get the right download from Macrium (and enter your license key) all of the options will be available. I suggest you go ahead and install the version you've got, then open it and go to Help > Enter License Key, and it'll tell you how to get the real version you paid for.

You can do that from the free version by updating the licence key.

@Fabler2 I think that's what I just said. Install what you've got, open the program, use the Help menu, and enter the license key.
