Macrium Reflect v10


Like myself, I imagine most Reflect Home users would barely touch 5% of the features. I do full images before any major changes - Windows Update etc and don't need the extras.
Yes, I used to think that, but things change. Rapid Delta restore is probably the most useful Premium feature in Home, though you may not realise you're using it. I do use Incrementals from time to time, and I also have Image Guardian enabled. Since I began using .vhdx native boot I've switched to using File and Folder Backup to image my .vhdx files(s). I used to use 7-Zip to back them up to a .zip file, but that took hours to complete, Reflect does the same task in minutes. About the only Premium feature I haven't needed to use is ReDeploy, Windows itself has always been good enough at sorting out the new drivers it needs.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Hi Bree. Yes Rapid Delta Restore is superb in the few restores I've needed to do. I'm careful about what changes I make and I don't "dabble". I still think there's a market for a somewhat reduced feature package at a reasonable rate without cutting it too much. If 100% of the code is done, it could be reduced to 50/60% without too much trouble (I think!) and perhaps attract more Home customers, many of whom don't back up at all.

The cheapest way to get v10 Home would be to buy a perpetual v8 Home licence now, then exchange it for a free 3 year v10 subscription on release of v10.

As v8 had a bit more than 3 years life from release on 17th May 2021 until v10, it's reasonable to assume v10 will have the same. If so, then a 3-year subscription would in practice be little different from having a perpetual licence then upgrading after 3 years. For a single v8 perpetual licence at £57.99 that would get you 3 years of v10 Home at less than £20 per year.

Not all updates are patches. Some normal bug fix updates have downloaded a full installer and installed over the exiting install.

As I recall going from v7 Home to v8 Home I changed Reflect's installed key to my v8 upgrade key, then Reflect took care of downloading and installing the new version.

Is that true if you have a four-licence pack?
If you bought a 4-pack licence after July 1st, 2024 then yes. The only condition is that you have to upgrade all 4 licences, you cannot upgrade just one.

If, like me, you got your 4-pack before that then you'd need to purchase a v8 to v10 upgrade. Macrium have not yet published any terms for that. I'm hoping they would offer something similar.

I bought our 4 pack licence in mid 2023. We have 4 main pcs between us which use these licenses plus a couple of older WIN 7 units which have Reflect 8 Free. Depending on cost when released I was thinking of installing vX on our 4 pcs and transferring our old 4 licences to our older pcs plus my daughter's which has free installed. Depends on the cost and what other options appear. BTW, how do I reset a licence if the program is uninstalled but the licence is still allocated and I can't raise a support ticket? Can't see anyway in the program.

Thanks OldNavy. I was thinking about the situation where you can't get into Windows and have to do a clean install but the licence is still allocated when you try to reinstall Reflect using that licence. I had problems upgrading a PC from W10 to W11 so before trying again to be safe I uninstalled Reflect and removed the licence.

There are many ways to create a suitable .vhdx file to boot from. The one I've most commonly used is to create a vhdx Create VHD or VHDX file in Windows 11 Tutorial then mount it and restore a Reflect system image to it. Then set it up to native boot. If you use Hyper-V VMs, then you can copy a Windows VM's .vhdx to another PC and set it up to native boot.

Alternatively you can create one at boot and install Windows to it. Create Windows 11 Virtual Hard Disk (VHDX) at Boot to Native Boot Tutorial

Native booting from a .vhdx is by far the easiest way to multi-boot. It leaves the original OS untouched, you can just delete the .vhdx and boot entry to remove it. It's so easy to set up that I may have got a bit carried away :wink:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Yeah, that's how I ran and tested WIndows 11 on my primary desktop computer at home that is running Windows 10. I didn't really want to upgrade my instance of 10 because it's stable as a rock and runs great, but i wanted to make sure when the time came, that I could also run windows 11 with my hardware.
mkdir D:\win11-vhdx

Open Disk Management
Action > Create VHD, ensure you do a VHDX file;. I put mine in D:\win11-vhdx
I created a 100GB fixed disk
Right click on this new disk and initialize as GPT, and give it a drive letter ( I used drive F)

Mount Windows 11 iso (I used drive g)
Open cmd as admin
G:
cd sources
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:G:\sources\install.wim (Get index of version you wish to install, I'm installing Windows 11 Pro which is index 6)
dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:G:\sources\install.wim /index:6 /ApplyDir:F:\

Make a boot entry for Windows
bcdboot F:\Windows /d (the /d says to leave your current default boot entry intact, so it will still boot to the native windows install on your machine)




Only real downside is that the .vhdx file is going to use X amount of drive space on your system. In my case, it was 100GB. Other than that, it works great. Also, it about doubled my boot time as it runs for a bit, then presents the menu that Bree mentioned. I'm fine with it, but it's nice to know.

If you decide you no longer want it, just delete the boot entry and then delete the .vhdx file.

I have four 64GB .vhdx (that's 256GB total) on a 157GB partition. The reason I can do that is that they are all dynamically expanding vhdx. When not booted from each file's size is only as large as the data it holds.

I just need to make sure there's enough free space for a vhdx to expand to its full drive size while it is booted from. If not it will BSoD with VHD BOOT HOST VOLUME NOT ENOUGH SPACE until I free up some space.

One irritating thing about dynamic vhdx files is even if you delete files inside the vhdx file, the vhdx file does not shrink in size on the host file.

Eventually the vhdx files grow to the maximum reserved size of the dynamic vhdx file.

The various means to recover the deleted space on the host just do not work as advertised.

The only sure file way I have ever found is to create a new blank vhdx file and clone the old one to the new one, delete the old one and rename new one.
